From the pages ofwww.biblesermonsandstudies.orgTHE HARPS OF JUBAL, OF DAVID AND OF GOD( A sermon by brother Tarran Dookie)THE HARPS OF JUBALIsa 14:11-12 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thyviols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. How artthou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cutdown to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!Ezek 28:13-14 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every preciousstone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, theonyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, andgold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in theein the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub thatcovereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God;thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.Gen 4:16-21 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dweltin the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and sheconceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name ofthe city, after the name of his son, Enoch. And unto Enoch was born Irad:and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusaelbegat Lamech. And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the onewas Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. And Adah bare Jabal: he wasthe father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. And hisbrother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harpand organ.Ex 32:18 -19 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise ofthem that sing do I hear. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh untothe camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed

hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath themount. The worship of God has always included music, be it with voices lifted up insongs unto God or the playing of instruments. Lucifer was created withinstruments as a part of his being. He led the angels of God in worship of theCreator. When Lucifer fell and was cast out from the presence of God hismusic did not die or come to an end. He has always used music to drawsouls unto himself. He has infiltrated the church with his music today and hehas many souls worshipping him instead of God.After Adam fell two sons were born to him, Cain and Abel. Cain was thefirstborn. Cain’s offering of the fruit of the ground was rejected by God butAbel’s offering of the flock was accepted by God. This did not please Cainand he slew his brother. Cain was cast out from the presence of God andwent to dwell in the land of Nod. Coming directly from the lineage of Cainwas Jubal who became the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.Understand that Jubal was not of the lineage of Seth (from whence cameAbraham), but rather he was of Cain and his harp and organ is none otherthan the music of Lucifer. We have no record of any worshipper of God using instruments beforeMiriam and the women of Israel used tambourines or timbrels in singingpraises unto God when Israel crossed the Red Sea and the pursuingEgyptians were drowned. But where did they get the timbrels from? Theyhad only now crossed the Red Sea and before this they were slaves in Egypt. The timbrels were from Egypt and can be traced back to Jubal. So God allowed the timbrels of Egypt to be used by Miriam in singingpraises to Him. God does allow us to use things of the world in our serviceunto Him. But we must be careful when we employ the things of this worldin the service of God. Their use must be covered by prayer and consecration. We cannot be flippant and careless. It was not long before the saidinstruments of Egypt were used in the idolatrous worship of the molten calf.Joshua thought the sound he heard was the sound of war. But Mosesproperly discerned that the sound was associated with dancing unto devils. Itis always dangerous when Christians use the things of this world. Love notthe world, neither the things that are in the world. (1 Jn 2:15) And they that

use this world , as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.(1Cor 7:31)Drums are never mentioned in the Scriptures in respect of worship unto God.While the timbrel was used on occasions of rejoicing and celebration such asbanquets or victory over an enemy (as when Miriam and the women playedthe timbrels after the defeat of the Egyptians) the timbrel was never used inthe temple service. The only percussion instrument mentioned as part of thetemple service is the cymbal. It was not used to create a beat but toaccentuate certain points in a song. The percussion instruments of the oldTestament made light sounds not the fracas one hears today. Drums are adominant part of music today. However, the beating of drums has alwaysbeen associated with hedonism and the worship of idols and demons. Whenchildren were offered up as sacrifices to idols such as Moloch and they werepassed through the fire the drums were played to drown out the cries of thescreaming children. An equally if not more sinister instrument than the drum has appeared on thescene in the twentieth century. It may very well turn out to be Satan’smasterpiece in the array of Jubal’s instruments he uses to captivate andbewitch souls, including naive, undiscerning and worldly Christians. I referto the abominable, ubiquitous electronic bass guitar. The electronic bass guitar was invented in the 1930s and has been massproduced since the 1950s. It gave great impetus to the sinful music genreknown as rock music. The electronic bass guitar is found in almost everystyle of music today including rock, metal, pop, punk rock, country, reggae, blues, jazz and of course so-called gospel music. There is hardly a piece ofrecorded music without it. Live performances by various artistes almostalways have the bass featured. It establishes the beat in conjunction withdrums and many times without the drums. The electronic bass guitar cannot be heard unless it is plugged into anamplifier and speaker. It can be amplified to just about any volume withoutfeedback. In places where parties are thrown the droning, annoying sound ofthe bass can be heard a considerable distance away (sometimes well overhalf a mile). It dominates and drowns out everything else. The bass guitaremits low frequency waves which are not as easily dissipated as higherfrequency waves. They will travel around a column and not be deflected offit. Low frequencies can fill spaces and saturate them, causing vibrations to

floors, walls and ceilings. Undoubtedly, this instrument has come from thepit of hell. The electronic bass guitar, like the drum, appeals to the baseinstincts of man.Drums and electronic bass guitars are also much utilised in the creation ofsyncopated music. Syncopation is a deliberate disruption of the regular flowof rhythm, most often by stressing an off-beat, or a note that is not on thebeat. Syncopation is a placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where theywouldn't normally occur. Syncopation is the essence of the back beat, usedin virtually all contemporary popular music (and that includes much of socalledChristian contemporary music). Syncopation is an integral part of thedevil’s music and is very pronounced in ritualistic, religious voodoo music.Drums, electronic bass guitars and syncopated music should have no placein any assembly of God’s people. They are an abomination.THE HARPS OF DAVID1 Sam 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was uponSaul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul wasrefreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.1 Chr 15:16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint theirbrethren to be the singers with instruments of music, psalteries and harpsand cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.2 Chr 7:6 And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also withinstruments of music of the LORD, which David the king had made to praisethe LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised bytheir ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israelstood.Isa 5:11-12 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they mayfollow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! And theharp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: butthey regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of hishands.Amos 6:3-7 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violenceto come near; That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their

couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst ofthe stall; That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselvesinstruments of music, like David; That drink wine in bowls, and anointthemselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for theaffliction of Joseph. Therefore now shall they go captive with the first thatgo captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall beremoved.David used a harp in worshipping God long before he became king. Themusic of his harp refreshed Saul and the evil spirit departed from him. WhenDavid became king he invented instruments to be used in the worship ofGod. He appointed singers and musicians to praise and worship God. Davidwas anointed of God to do this. David’s instruments were actually called theinstruments of God because God was with him when he made theseinstruments. These instruments had the sanction of God.Even after David died the instruments continued to be used. We see whenSolomon dedicated the temple that David’s instruments were used. Hezekiahalso used the instruments of David (see 2 Chr 29:25-27).Unfortunately, Israel fell away and while some good kings tried to bringthem back to God, they drifted further and further away from God. God wasno longer pleased with their offerings and worship as it came from defiledhands and unclean hearts. Even the use of David’s instruments could notright the wrong. Some even invented instruments like David did but this stilldid not please God. God even said ‘ And I will cause the noise of thy songsto cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.’ Ezek 26:13.This did happen as they were led into Babylonian captivity.Mat 26:30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mountof Olives.Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teachingand admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

By the time of the incarnation of Jesus Christ the use of musical instrumentsin the worship of God had almost ceased. Historians hold that there were noinstruments in the temple during the time of Christ. Christ sang an hymnbefore the crucifixion and we see no hint of an instrument being used. Theinstructions to sing and make melody in our hearts as found in the NewTestament give no support to the use of instruments. History confirms thatthe early church did not use any instruments in singing unto God. Althoughfamiliar with instruments it is generally believed that the early church failedto adopt the use of instrumental music in their religious worship. The organis said to have been introduced into church music by Pope Vitalian in 666A.D. However, this did not become general practice and the church did notuse instrumental music for 1200 years, in spite of its availability. Is this accidental? Why did not the early church or the churches for manycenturies after not use instruments? The truth is that the instruments ofDavid were not around. The instruments that could be found were inventedby the world for the world. The children of God rightfully shunned their usefor centuries. Such men as John Calvin, Adam Clarke, John Wesley andMartin Luther all denounced the use of instruments in the worship of God.But how times have changed. Apart from a few denominations that do notuse instruments, every church wants to have as many instruments aspossible. And more and more they sound like the world. The people of theworld are even entertained when so-called gospel music is being played. They have no problem dancing lewdly to it. After all the beat played bymusicians in churches generally mimic the world and is the music ofLucifer. The harps of Jubal and not the harps of David are in the churchestoday. Most times unconsecrated, carnal Christian musicians are playingthese instruments. The reality is that the harps of David are nowhere to be seen today. Childrenof God are not making instruments as David did. What we have therefore arethe harps of Jubal (the musical instruments of the world) in the assemblies. The majority of Christian music played today is nothing but shallow, worldly entertainment. It will entertain and woo some but it will never edifyanyone, much less bring them to Christ. It must surely grieve the Holy Spiritwhen believers think worldly so-called Christian music could draw souls tothe Lord. Such a substitute for the Holy Spirit has never worked and willnever work. There is such a thing as false regeneration.

We do not want to say that all instrumental music used in worship is wrongor sinful. However, it is obvious to those with discernment that much of themusic played in churches and so-called Christian radio stations and by‘Christian’ recording artistes is nothing but entertainment. The beat andtenor of this music is of the world and does not bring glory to God. Ratherself is aggrandised in much of this music. How we have borrowed from theworld and have conformed to the world! The world has its recording artistesand stars and there are believers who want their recording artistes and stars. The world has its top twenty and some Christians want their top twenty aswell. When Christians pay for these recordings and attend concerts featuringthese artistes, they lend support and promote these artistes in their folly. Thisworldly entertainment (disguised by so-called Christian lyrics) encouragesbelievers to love the world and the things of this world. Believers ought notto be conformed to the world.God in his wisdom and providence ensured that the church of the firstcentury and for several centuries after that did not use instruments as theywould have used the harps and instruments of Jubal. Think not that God didnot see the abomination that music would become in these last days.Instruments played soberly with a view to worship and praise God and not tocreate entertainment and appeal to man’s base instincts may still have itsplace. However, the safer ground is to sing individually or congregationallywithout the addition of instruments. Let us not try to think that we are wiser, stronger or more discerning than the early church, because we are not.THE HARPS OF GODRev 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four andtwenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.Rev 14:2-3 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harpingwith their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, andbefore the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song butthe hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from theearth.

Rev 15:2 -4 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and themthat had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over hismark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having theharps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and thesong of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord GodAlmighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fearthee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nationsshall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. The above verses in the book of Revelation clearly establishes that there ismusic in heaven. The harps of God will be heard. Not the harps of Jubal, noteven the harps of David but rather the harps of God will be heard. Three setsof people are mentioned as having harps: the twenty-four elders, the hundredand forty-four thousand, and those who got victory over the beast. Thisencompasses the entirety of the elect of God. We shall all have harps ofGod!The redeemed will sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb to theaccompaniment of the harps of God. It is noteworthy that there is no hint ofpercussion instruments in heaven. It is the sweet, pleasant tones of the harpsof God that will blend in with the voices of God’s elect. In the presence of God there will be no cacophony, no discordant sounds, nomusic that elevates self. The music of the redeemed and all the host ofheaven will fill the heavenly air as praise and worship ascends to God. Suchmusic can hardly be imagined as we abide on this earth for it belongs to theheavenly realm.Believers in Christ Jesus may freely copy, use and distribute this sermon.
