ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESbecause of the affection from all people in Anne’s surroundings, she had been a calm, brilliant, andwise girl to face her life in her future. Finally, she can take the true decision of her choice to stay inGreen Gables. Keywords: benefaction, extraversion, personality, type.INTRODUCTIONIt is quite helpful while we know the overviewof the study at a glance. In this chapter explainedbackground of the study, the problems, objectives of thestudy, significance of the study, limitation of the study, method of the study, and organization of the study.1.1 Background of The StudyIn this life, everybody has their owncharacteristics and personality true. But, not many peoplerealize or know how their true characteristics or their truepersonality and they even do not know how peoplearound them saw their characters everyday. According toAllport, “personality is something and does something”(Allport, 1961:29). In other words, Allport want to saythat personality is not merely the mask we wear or simplybehaviour when we were in the middle of our society. Inaddition, personality is particular combination ofemotional, attitudinal, and behavioural response patternsby an individual.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/personality).Understanding the personality is not as easy asour thinking, because lot of people have to go topsychotherapy or follow some test in psycho-test to knowwhat actually the personality they have at a time. So, theycan‟t make a mistake if they faced with somebody elselike a partner business, peers, or also enemy if they knewhow they are in front of them. Psychologist found manytypes that signed what the personality people have, especially their trait personality, such as: perfectionist, rescuer, ambitious, romantic, observer, adventuress, patriotist, peacemaker, or affectionate. Even, lots ofpsychologist made lot of researches to know what thepersonality that people‟s have from many ways, likesleep position, sit position, or from gait, table manner, etc. Moreover, from many personality‟s types, manypeople tend to restrict or escape from their societybecause they unconfident or afraid to face the problem infront, so they choose to run away from the problem.Human being is born with the pure soul, like apaper has not been written. When humans start to growup, they had to make some decision what colours thatthey will draw in their paper. In selecting the colour, itdepends on their willing, their thinking, or influence fromtheir surroundings. In their way of life, they always hopethat they can choose one colour which can save them inthe right place, but sometimes they can‟t predict it. So,because of the condition in their surroundings, it madethem to choose wrong decision indirectly in their life.Human being is created more perfect than theother creatures, because human being have a sense tothink about which is best for themselves and others. Thisis a reason why human could evolve according to theirown way in their life. But, adolescence is still in progressthat can not be separated from education or experience isseen or given by others to them, like their family, thesmallest scope is faced by a child. When a child made amistake, they will see the reaction from their parents, siblings, peer, and surrounding communities. From thatcase, it shows that a child will learn from theirsurrounding and try to find out what they want to do.Therefore, the role of the family is very important toestablish the child's personality in order to make them asa better person. However, providing appropriate education forchildren is not easy, because parents should educate theirchildren in accordance with natural developmental stagesand also should be based on what they are supposed tolearn. While parents made a wrong decision in providingeducation both of academic or non academic, it will giveimpacts on their live and their mental development. AsBukatko and Daehler said in their book, ChildDevelopment 4 th edition pg. 479 that families are centralto the process of socialization, the process by whichchildren acquire the social knowledge, behaviour, andattitude valued by the society. The quotation above states that children can startto learn alive through their family first. Because, familyis the smallest scope in applying the pattern ofcommunity life, giving respect, appreciating, and helpingother people. While, children can not apply these patternsin the family, there is no guarantee that children canapply these patterns in the society. It is shown in thenovel clearly, while Marilla Curtbert asked Anne to be agood girl, without much talking and using strange wordsin her imagination, to become acquainted with Barry‟sfamily. Marilla thought that Barry‟s family is one of thefamily who always think logically and honourable, andthey will not let other people with weird thoughts meetwith their family‟s members, especially their daughter, named Diana Barry. As the quotation below,“…And I do wish you wouldn't use such longwords. It sounds so funny in a little girl. I guess Diana'lllike you well enough. It's her mother you've got to reckonwith. If she doesn't like you it won't matter how muchDiana does. If she has heard about your outburst to Mrs.Lynde and going to church with buttercups round your

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLEShat I don't know what she'll think of you. You must bepolite and well behaved, and don't make any of yourstartling speeches….”(1980:153-154)Actually, Marilla Curtbert, including a womanwho is assertive and always think logically, but when shemet Anne, she felt so weird to listen Anne‟s words abouther imagination. But, easily those words had influencedMarilla‟s heart deeply. Even so, Marilla felt that shewould not let Anne‟s words influence her to forget herduty to give some educating for her lovely girl. Anne hasa wild imagination and everyone who heard it, will fall inlove with every word that comes out of Anne‟s mind andmouth. Because of the planning to give some educationfor Anne, Marilla always asks Anne to keep her tongueand save those words. When Marilla steel herself to make a decision toadopt little girl in her house, Anne Shirley, she hasplanned a variety of education that must be accepted andstudied by Anne but not by coercion or violence. Theeducation is about moral values, religion, and some skillsthat should be owned by a woman, such as: cooking, sewing, gardening, etc. Although Marilla is one of thewomen who is disciplined and uphold high moral values, she does not ignore the affection that must be obtained byAnne, like the warmth of a family that she had neverhave felt before. But, Marilla always share herresponsibility with her brother that regulates educationfor Anne is retained by Marilla lonely. However, thisdecision was very profitable for Matthew because healways want to spoil his lovely girl, Anne Shirley, asmuch as he could.By the balancing of affection and disciplineeducation making Anne gained completely in a family. Moreover, Anne has had a hard time in the past and shemust be survived until it‟s delivered her to get theopportunity of having a family in Green Gables. However, according to Marilla, in forming a girl, AnneShirley, be quiet and cautious, is as difficult as teachingthe sunlight dancing on a river. Even, Marilla was almostin depression because she is not quite sure that she canchange Anne‟s trait personality. However, Marillabelieved that her little girl that will turn into a young girlwith brilliant intelligent and respectable one day, sopeople will be amazed to see it. Such as one big momentin Anne‟s life , when Marilla, Matthew and all people inthe ballroom amazed and proud when they saw Annereads her best essays who got the highest achievements inthe academic queen and get the Avery scholarship, like inthis quotation :You're a credit to your friends, Anne, that'swhat, and we're all proud of you."(1980:440)Anne of Green Gables is a bestselling novel byCanadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery published in1908. (http:// Anne_of_Green_Gables wiki.htm). Thisnovel has been sold up to fifty thousands copies, whichhave been successfully translated into thirty-sixlanguages. The masterpiece has acknowledged thesuccess of Lucy Maud Montgomery's imagination inwriting the main character, Anne Shirley, with a verystrong and detailed. In this novel, Anne has red hair that made herused her imagination to think a lot about her appearancemore beauty. She was eleven years old when she came toGreen Gables, in which she was being taken care byMarilla and Matthew Curtbert, a pair of sister and brotherwho were not married yet. In this novel, Lucy told abouta child has full of the romantic and affection for hersurroundings perfectly. Anne Shirley, the main characterin this novel, has been abandoned by his parents whileshe was three months old. In fact, she never saw the realface of her parents. When she was born, her mother wassick suddenly with long fever and eventually died. And,while her father was living in desperation because of hiswife‟s death, he suffered a high fever like his wife andit‟s not for long time that he died because of his disease. After all was experienced, Anne‟s parenting wasdirectly taken by Mrs. Thomas, a woman who has helpedAnne's parents daily. Mrs. Thomas was brought Anne inher house. When Anne was still baby, she stayed in Mrs.Thomas‟s house for helping to raise her seven childrenuntil she was eight years old. But, her husband died by anaccident when he was drunk soon. Finally, Mrs. Thomasreturned home to her parents, but unfortunately herparents unaccepted Anne Shirley‟s presence in theirhouse. Because of economical factor, Mrs. Thomas hadto give Anne‟s upbringing to Mrs. Harmond. Actually,Mrs. Harmond needs a child who could help her to takingcare her three pairs of twin. Once more, Anne also had tohelp Mrs. Harmond, who also lives with her husband, Mr.Harmond was a drunk.Anne's struggle to survive was not completeduntil here, because Mrs. Harmond‟s husband died in anaccident when he was in a drunken condition. Finally,Anne‟s parenting was given to the charitable institution. When she was in the institution, she felt that she have nomore imagination. It just because of the charitableinstitution‟s surrounding, that only consist of barren landand the old walls that are not good enough to grow animagination. So, this place made her imagination died. She felt unhappy like in her home before although shehad to do her obligations over there. But, it was not long period, because Anne's lifewas gradually improved after she met with Curtbert‟sfamily. Although the first time, there hasmisunderstanding about deliver mistake of a boy whowas asked by the Curtbert‟s family, which is sent adaughter named Anne Shirley. However, Anne was ableto convince this family to nurture her, especially toconvince Marilla Curtbert, sister of Matthew Curtbert, inorder to believe in herself that she could be a proudlydaughter. From this way, Anne has to face her beginningof problems appeared in Anne‟ new life in the GreenGables. Even so, she really got a sense of compassionfrom people around her as well as they done, especiallyfrom Marilla and Matthew Curtbert at Green Gables.Besides that, she could devote all her imagination in the3

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESGreen Gables which is the place that she dreamed of for along time. Anne‟s behaviour also gradually improvedbecause of Marilla‟s upbringing from morality „tillspirituality. In this place too, she had an experiences thatcan change her behaviour to other people and newfriends. As time went on, she was able to prove if she isable to adapt to all the rules that has been determinedfrom Marilla and its environment, even though she hadexperienced with her rival that she should be fixed byherself. It made Anne‟s personality was developedbecome a girl who is more mature to response her ownproblems than before. It finally made people around herbecome more sympathetic and affectionate towards her,who was famous with her intelligent to solve the problemquickly though sometimes a bit too late. But it really doesnot reduce the affection of people for her. From all events that happened between Anneand the people around her made them expected about thechanges from Anne‟s personality. Clearly, from all eventshad been suffered by Anne in the Green Gables, made herto be able to control her imagination which is too wildfirstly. Other side, Anne‟s stubborn and anger can becontrolled and she can change to be someone who iswiser in responding her problems fairly. All the changesin Anne‟s personality proved that she has found herself inher body and mind in front of her surroundingssuccessfully. Not only, Anne‟s sensitive, impulsive, andeasy to give out her love, but also she can make peoplearound her have a soft heart, can appreciate the op<strong>ini</strong>onof one another more, and easier to give love one eachother.Actually, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy MaudMontgomery is consist of Lucy‟s experience when shewas in childhood. Lucy Maud Montgomery wasnobility‟s woman, which had been abandoned by hermother, Clara Woolner MacNeill Montgomery, when shewas a child because of TBC. Meanwhile, her father wentto Saskatchewan when Lucy was seven years old. Lucywas born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, on 30November 1874. After her mother death, she grew up byhis grandparents from his mother's side, AlexanderMarquis Woolner MacNeill at Cavendish. She haseducated and grew with very strict rules by hergrandparents, after Lucy‟s mother death.“Montgomery‟s early live in Cavendish wasvery lonely. Despite having relations nearby much of herchildhood was spent alone. Montgomery spent time ofher life, in which she created many imaginary friends andworlds to cope with her loneliness, as what developedher creative mind” (http:// Lucy_Maud_Montgomerywiki.htm)Lucy felt that she has an empty life because shewas abandoned by her father and mother when she was achild. Not to mention, the rules that bind her so tightly. With all of sad experience of her life up to happyexperience, she tried to make her first novel, entitledAnne of Green Gables. Novels that have at the first timeshe was telling some story of her life about her feelings inappraise her life. However, she tried to brave to face thereality in her life. However, before she issued her first novel, Anneof Green Gables, she has written several short storieshave been published in 1897 by several magazines andnewspapers. Because the work‟s results are verysatisfying, Lucy could publish more than 100 copies ofshort stories from 1897 till 1907.On The Publishers Weekly of 1908, theadvertisements by L. C. Page quoted quite somerecommendations, laudatory comments from readers, andexcerpts of positive reviews from The Boston Herald,Chicago Record-Herald, and Boston Transcript. Forexample: I take it as a great test of the worth of the bookthat while the young people are rummaging all overthe house looking for ANNE, the head of the familyhas carried her off to read on his way to town.(BlissCarman) "In Anne of Green Gables you will find thedearest and most moving and delightful child sincethe immortal Alice." Mark Twain in a letter toFrancis Wilson. She talks her way into the affections of herreaders for she is positively irresistible, says theBoston Transcript.(http://kpl.lib.mo.us/content_uploads/Anne_of_Green_Gables.pdf)Those above statement have been proved thatAnne of Green Gables was able to make each of thechildren, teenagers, and parents are fascinated by everydetail and also the character of Anne's imagination thatmade them felt compassion‟s feeling. In each Surprisewhich is given by Lucy Maud Montgomery on eachchapter, that made the reader become to f<strong>ini</strong>sh readingthe novel. With all her imagination, she can make peoplearound her felt the joy of that was presented in LucyMaud Montgomery‟s novel as one of Anne's character.Such as, Anne's imagination appears when she felt thefirst morning at Green Gables, where she will be returnedby Marilla Curtbert to the orphanage because there wassome mistake."Oh, I like things to have handleseven if they are only geraniums. Itmakes them seem more likepeople. How do you know but thatit hurts a geranium's feelings justto be called a geranium andnothing else? You wouldn't like tobe called nothing but a woman allthe time. Yes, I shall call it Bonny.(http:// chapter-iv---morninggreen-gables.htm)

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESFurthermore, in the novel Anne of Green Gableslooks interesting view because the figures are notintroduced in the early opening of this story directly. But,Lucy added other supporting characters in subsequentchapters. Thus, because of that makes the stories in thisnovel is not monotonous with one character in the novel. In each the unique character of Anne Shirley as the maincharacter in the novel Anne of Green Gables and everydetail pouring of love, a sense of sensitivity which iswritten by Lucy Maud Montgomery makes this novel isinteresting to be analyzed in this thesis.1.2 Statements of the ProblemsConsidering the facts described in thebackground, the study would like to formulate someproblems as follow:1. How is Anne‟s extraversion depicted inLucy Maud Montgomery‟s Anne of GreenGables?2. What are the major causes of Anne‟sextraversion in Lucy Maud Montgomery‟s Anneof Green Gables?3. What are the effects of Anne‟sextraversion in Lucy Maud Montgomery‟s Anneof Green Gables?1.3 Purpose of the StudyBased on the statements of the problems, the objectives of the study are as follows:1. To describe Anne‟s extraversion in Lucy MaudMontgomery‟s Anne of Green Gables2. To reveal its major causes of Anne‟sextraversion in Lucy Maud Montgomery‟s Anneof Green Gables3. To find out the effects of Anne‟s extraversion inLucy Maud Montgomery‟s Anne of GreenGables1.4 Significance of the StudyThrough the study titled Anne’s extraversionand its major causes in Lucy Maud Montgomery’sAnne of Green Gables would be discussed about Anne‟sextraversion itself from Carl Jung‟s Psychological Typestheory. This study will give new contribution aboutextraversion type from the main character, Anne Shirley,an orphan who has wild imagination in her mind tosurvive. It is also giving English Department students inSurabaya state university some motivations, to thinkabout what good or bad trait personality in our mind tolife in this world. Moreover it, this study is also intendedto open up other studies toward Lucy MaudMontgomery‟s works, which are considered as greatliterature from Canada.1.5 Limitation of The StudyThis thesis would be discussed many issues thatcan be analyzed. However, the study focuses on Anne‟strait personality, as Anne‟s extraversion type in LucyMaud Montgomery‟s Anne of Green Gables. There aremany quotations in each chapter the meaning ofextraversion itself, its major causes of Anne‟s personalitydevelopment and also the effects on Anne‟s extraversion. Finally, this study will discuss about how Annetry to change her behavior little by little in her newsurroundings to make her better than before while shelived alone.1.6 Research MethodologyThe study uses a library research. The dataand analysis of the data will be mentioned asfollows.1. Data:The source of data is mainly in the novel of LucyMaud Montgomery entitled Anne of Green Gables, republished on June, 1908. From the source of data, thedata will be gained in the form of quotations, phrases, monologues, dialogues, and descriptions within LucyMaud Montgomery‟s Anne of Green Gables that indicateAnne‟s extraversion on the novel. This data are used as amain data to run the research.2. Data CollectionSince it does not serve in numbering and does notneed table sources, statistical method is not be used inthis thesis. The method of collecting data which is used inthis thesis is the library method. Both extensive readingand intensive reading are used in analyzing the problems.Intensive reading the novel is very needed to find out theanswer of problems in this study. Besides the novel, otherreferences such as journals and books are needed to helpthe analyzing.3. Data AnalysisIn analyzing the data, there are some steps to do:a. Classifying data based on the statement of theproblem. The classification uses to avoid the broaddiscussion. The classifications are def<strong>ini</strong>tion ofextraversion and its major causes and effects of Anne‟sextraversion.b. Analyzing what the extraversion in the novel byintensively reading the novel.5

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESc. Analyzing the causes of Anne‟s extraversion byclosely reading the novel.d. Analyzing the effects of Anne‟s extraversion onAnne‟s personality and Anne‟s environment byintensively reading the novel.1.7 Organization of the StudyTo analyze the problem, this thesis is divided into fourchapters. Chapter I is the introduction of the study whichconsists of background of the study, statements of theproblems, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, method of the study andorganization of the study. Chapter II is the review ofrelated literature, including theories and references thatare related to this study. Chapter III is the analysis of thestudy which is the part of analyzing the material in thenovel vividly. This study hopefully can get a clear answerfor those statements of the problems. Chapter IV as thelast chapter titled conclusion which is presenting somestatements toward the result of the statements of theproblems. For its complement, this study also includesand appendices which are consist of novel synopsis, biography of the author.REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATUREA scientific theory is a set of relatedassumptions that allows scientists to use logical deductivereasoning to formulate testable hypothesis. In this chapterwill explain the review of related literature. It covers thetheories related to the personality and extraversiontheory, which will explain in each problem in this novelthat analyzed. For the last chapter, it consists of theparadigm analysis.2.1. PersonalityOn this part, the problem would be analyzed bythe personality theory, especially Carl Jung‟s personalitytheory and his psychological types theory to analyze themain character, Anne Shirley‟s personality with hersurrounding deeply.2.1.1 Psychological Theories on PersonalityPersonality : A Psychological Interpretation; theword “personality” comes from the word “persona”,which originally denotes the theatrical mask worn in theGreek drama and later used by the Romans. Theextending concept of “persona” comes to mean theexternal appearance or not the true self (Allport,1937:27). According to Carl Jung in Symbols ofTransformation, “persona” means an outer edge of theself, a mask worn by the person by his/her culture, thepart he/she is expected to play in life; in other wordshis/her public personality (Jung, 1956:3)Allport stated that Personality is the dynamicorganization within the individual of thosepsychophysical systems that determine the individual‟sunique adjustment to the environment (Allport, 1937:48).But, In 1961, Allport had changed the last phrase to read“that determine his characteristic behavior and thought”(Allport, 1961:28). Because, he realized that the phrase“adjustment to his environment” could imply that peoplemerely adapt to their environment.Allport chooses each phrase of his def<strong>ini</strong>tionscarefully so that each word will represent what he wantedto say. The term “dynamic organization” word implies anintegrations and interrelatedness of the various aspects ofpersonality. Because, personality is organized andpatterned. It means a person‟s personality is not static buthis/her personality can develop and change. Meanwhilethe words “psychosocial systems” means the body andthe mind of someone which must be considered becausethey also can influence his/her personality. Another wordin the def<strong>ini</strong>tion that implies action is “determine”, whichsuggest that “personality is something and doessomething” (Allport, 1961:29).The term “characteristic” means the uniquenessof someone. It means no people are alike in theircharacteristics (1976:241). All person stamp their uniquemark or engraving on their personality, and theircharacteristic behavior and thought set them apart fromall other people (Jess & Gregory Feist, 2006:374). So,people‟s characteristics had signed with the uniqueengraving, as like stamp or marking, that no one else canduplicate.According to Allport, his def<strong>ini</strong>tion achieves onesummary that personality is both physical andpsychological; it includes both overt behavior and covertthoughts; it not only is something, but it does something.Personality is both substance and change, both productand process, both structure and growth.2.1.2 Personality Type TheoriesPersonality type refers to the psychologicalclassification of different types of individuals(http://www.wikipedia.personaliy-type.htm.co.id). Theidea of psychological types originated in the theoreticalwork of Carl Jung and William Marston, whose work isreviewed in Dr. Travis Bradberry's Self-Awareness.Personality types are very distinguished from personalitytrait. Both of them have each methods to prove howqualified they are from their personality test to create asmaller grouping of behavioural tendencies. Types aresometimes said to involve qualitative differencesbetween people, whereas traits might be construed asquantitative differences (2008: ).

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESThe term "type" has not been used consistentlyin psychology and has become the source of someconfusion. Furthermore, because personality test scoresusually fall on a bell curve rather than in distinctcategories, personality type theories have receivedconsiderable criticism among psychometric researchers. One study that directly compared a "type" instrument (theMBTI) to a "trait" instrument (the NEO PI) found that thetrait measure was a better predictor of personalitydisorders. One example of personality types is type A andtype C (or the neutral type B). Type A individuals are atgreater risk for coronary heart disease; type C individualsare at greater risk for quickly progressing cancers. In bothof these cases, the “types” are defined by particularpatterns of behaviour (Zimbardo, 1996:511). What putstype A, individuals at risk for heart attacks is consistenthostility in interpersonal relationships (Adler &Mathhews, 1994; Smith, 1992). Type C individuals don‟texpress negative emotions and are consistently compliant(Eysenck, 1998; Temoshok, 1990; Temoshok & Dreher,1992). The identification of an individual‟s behaviours astype A and type C allows researchers to make predictionsabout, for example the likelihood of future illness. In this theory, one of the more influential ideasoriginated in the theoretical work of Carl Jung in hisbook, Psychological Types. Carl Jung realized that hisperspective about typology differ from Sigmund Freudand Alfred Adler, whereas Jung interests with typologybecause of his desire to reconcile both of the theorist.Jung wrote, "In attempting to answer this question, Icame across the problem of types; for it is one'spsychological type which from the outset determines andlimits a person's judgment." (Jung, [1961] 1989:207) Heconcluded that Freud's theory was extraverted and Adler'sintroverted. (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 91) Jung becameconvinced that acrimony between the Adlerian andFreudian camps was due to this unrecognized existenceof different fundamental psychological attitudes, whichled Jung "to conceive the two controversial theories ofneurosis as manifestations of a type-antagonism." (Jung,1966: par. 64).Jung states the theory in terms of the everydayaspects seen in well-balanced people. In addition to theirdominant process, such people have an auxiliarydeveloped well enough to provide a balance betweenjudgment and perception, and between extraversion andintroversion. Nowhere in Jung‟s book does, he describethese normal, balanced types with an auxiliary process attheir disposal. He portrays each process in sharpest focusand with maximum contrast between its extraverted andintroverted forms (Isabel with Peter, 1980:17).Moreover, In Theories of Personality 6 th ,besides the levels of the psyche and the dynamics ofpersonality, Carl Jung recognized various psychologicaltypes that grow out of a union of two basic attitudes--Introversion and Extraversion—and four separateFunctions—thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuiting(2006:115). Two basic attitudes are the extraverts‟auxiliary, gives them access to their own inner life and tothe world of ideas; the introverts‟ auxiliary, gives them ameans to adapt to the worl of action and to deal with iteffectively (Isabel with Peter, 1980:19).Differ from trait that showed extraversion andintroversion are part of continuous dimension in themiddle of people, according to type theories, introvertsand extraverts are two fundamentally different categoriesof people. Types are sometimes said to involvequalitative differences between people, whereas traitsmight be construed as quantitative differences(http://www.wikipedia.personality_type.htm.co.id).Both Introversion and extraversion can combinewith anyone or more of four functions, forming eightpossible orientations, or types. The four functions, as:sensing, thinking, feeling and intuiting, can be brieflydefined as follows: sensing tells people that somethingexists; thinking enables them to recognize its meaning;feeling tells them its value or worth; and intuition allowsthem to know about it without knowing how they know(Feist, 2006:117).Jung writes: for all the types appearing inpractice, the principle holds good that besides theconscious main function there is also a relativelyunconscious, auxiliary function which is in every respectdifferent from the nature of the main function. (Jung,1923:515)2.2. The Theory of ExtraversionIn Merriam Webster Dictionary, Extraversion is"the act, state, or habit of being predominantly concernedwith and obta<strong>ini</strong>ng gratification from what is outside theself"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraversion_and_Introversion). In contrast to Introversion, extraversion is theattitude distinguished by the turning outward of thepsychic energy so that a person is oriented toward theobjective and away from the subjective (Jest & Gregory JFeist, 2006:116).In discussing the extraversion, Carl Jung alwayscompared his explanation about extraversion withIntroversion. In The Old Wise Man Time magazinearticle about Jung, Feb. 14, 1955, According to CarlJung, introversion and extraversion refer to the directionof psychic energy. If a person‟s psychic energy usuallyflows outwards then he or she is an extravert, while if theenergy usually flows inwards, the person is an introvert. For Jung, extraverts were more focused on the outerworld and introverts on their own inner mentality. Healso associated extraversion with hysteric disorders andintroversion with what today would be called mooddisorders.Carl Jung (1875-1961), a contemporary ofFreud, developed a theory of psychological types7

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESascribing each person with one of two fundamentalattitude types: introversion and extroversion. Extrovertsare outgoing, easily adaptable, and confident aboutunknown situations. Introverts are hesitant, reflective, somewhat mistrustful, and not socially outgoing(http://www.scientificpsychic.com/workbook/person.html).The extravert's flow is directed outward towardpeople and objects, and the introvert's is directed inwardtoward concepts and ideas. Contrasting characteristicsbetween extraverts and introverts include the following: Extraverts are action oriented, while introverts arethought oriented. Extraverts seek breadth of knowledge and influence, while introverts seek depth of knowledge and influence. Extraverts often prefer more frequent interaction, while introverts prefer more substantial interaction. Extraverts recharge and get their energy fromspending time with people, while introverts recharge andget their energy from spending time alone.According Isabel Briggs Myers with Peter BMyers in their book 1980, Gift Differing, extraversion iscomplementary. The extravert is more involved with theouter world of people and things. Therefore, whencircumstances permit, the extravert likes to focus them onthe outside environment. The conduct of extraverts isbased on the outer situation. If they are thinkers, theytend to criticize or analyze or organize it (1980:53). Inany case, the extravert starts with the outer situation. The advantages of starting with the outersituation are obvious and much esteemed in the presentWestern civilization, which in dominated by the extravertviewpoint. There are plenty of reasons for thisdomination. Extraverts are more vocal than introverts;they are more numerous , apparently in the ratio of threeto one; and they are accessible and understandable, whereas the introverts are not readily understandable, even to each other, and are likely to be thoroughlyincomprehensible to the extraverts. Extravert is also hasmany effects on one personality, such as: theafterthinkers, attitude relaxed and confident, mindsoutwardly directed, interest and attention followingobjective happening, primarily those of the immediateenvironment, and etc. (1980:56)2.3 Paradigm of AnalysisThis study is analyzing the subject ofAnne‟s extraversion and its major causes in LucyMaud Montgomery‟s Anne of Green Gables. Inanalyzing this subject, this study uses two theories;those are the theory of personality and extraversion. The personality theory is needed to describeabout the Anne‟s personality that analyzed in thisthesis. Except it, this thesis focuses on thepersonality type by Carl Jung to reveal the kinds ofAnne‟s personality in the novel. Whereas, to revealits major causes and effects of this study, this thesishas chosen the theory of extraversion is taken fromCarl Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers with Peter B.Myers, to analyze the subject of this study. To support Carl Jung‟s theory, this thesis also shows thesupporting theory to consolidate lot of op<strong>ini</strong>on in oneunity perfectly from some theorist, such as: GordonAllport (1961), Eysenck (1992), (Wiggins & Pincus,1992), (Costa & McCrae, 1992), etc.ANALYSIS3.1 The Depiction of Anne’s ExtraversionEvery human being always has a chance to fixmistakes and updates everything to get better. A changehas also never looked at how old the human and when itchooses to change. Because, in themselves can bedetermined their life that they would change or not.Basically, humans have two sides in their life, as like thebad side and good side, and it depends on which side ismore dominant in use. Actually, changes are not far awayfrom the factors that support it. As like, the factors ofenvironment, our own behavior, and personality in us."Oh, yes, I think I will, Marilla," returnedAnne optimistically.” (Montgomery,1980:189:4)The above quotation is proving that AnneShirley, the main character in this novel, has trulyrealized her mistake in imag<strong>ini</strong>ng that most endanger herlife. When an imagination, has made Anne soar andcreate completely lose her view of the truth which mustbe experienced in real life. Initially, Anne feel only herimagination which has helped her to get past thebitterness in her life, but when her imagination can not beconsidered the true, then Anne knew that is not ever beher imagination will always provide the good in life.3.1.1 Anne’s TraitBasically, woman is one of human being whohas sentimentality in their heart. In other cases, lots ofwomen decide to bring her trait like a man around them.Because, they want to show her mascul<strong>ini</strong>ty or herdefense from others who always makes themunderestimated from their gender as a woman, like Annedid in this novel. When she was a child, she had to useher self-esteem as woman to survive in wherever she is.This part had seen in this novel when Anne realized thatshe had done in wrong way to her friend, Gilbert Blythe.

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLES"I forgave you that day by the pondlanding, although I didn't know it. What astubborn little goose I was. I've been--Imay as well make a complete confession--I've been sorry ever since."(Montgomery, 1980:253)In above quotation, proved that Anne made amistake to let her feeling hurt deeply to Gilbert. Else, shehad been spent her time to pal up with her best rival inher school to share about all lesson that she can‟t.Actually, she wants this boy to be her friend more thanher enemy or rival. She knew that she just an orphan girlwho still has sense of her honor highly at the time. So,she will prove how much stronger she is to stay in herown decision to restrain from Gilbert. Anne is a girl whobrave to face all difficult in her eyes and she can keepground as well as she does in this world.Actually, Anne knew that she has debility in herphysical appearance but she did not want to confess inher mind freely. Because, she still hold by herimagination to help her imag<strong>ini</strong>ng all beauty that shewants. Whereas, she knew that if she angry because lotsof people judge her appearance scornfully, instead sheshowed her debility much more. Even so, she is a womanwho still needs somebody, like a man to protect and standbeside her from many difficulties, as seen in thisquotation:"We were born to be good friends, Anne. You've thwarted destiny enough. I knowwe can help each other in many ways. You are going to keep up your studies, aren't you? So am I.” (Montgomery,1980:253)In other ways, a woman always needs a man tostay beside them when she got any difficulties in her way.Because, between man and woman has interdependenceto solve their problem. As like, husband and wife, brotherand sister, or grandfather and his grandniece. But, awoman had not to involve a man in her whole life in allcases. The girl looked like mature woman readily, when agirl in her adolescence faced her problem that demandher only decision to choose the better way for her lovelyfamily or her own self.Sometimes, a girl can‟t take her big decisionbecause they afraid about what something in her nextfuture. And, most of woman always still uses her ego tochoose what the better side just only for themselveswithout think in their surroundings. But, it‟s nothappened in Anne‟s decision to take big plan in her lifefor her and surroundings ungrudgingly. Actually, Anne isa girl who familiar with difficult situation in her past, soshe looks more mature than other girls when she mustdecide a big plan in her life.“….My mind is quite made up, Marilla.I'm NOT going to Redmond; and I AMgoing to stay here and teach. Don't youworry about me a bit.” (Montgomery,1980:249)3.1.2 Anne’s Attitude towards Her EnvironmentSocializing is one of the necessary things in lifebecause of the nature of human can not live alone. Notmany people are good at socializing, but not a few peoplesay that they can live alone without socializing with theirsurroundings. With the human nature, sometimes toomany people who have the characteristic of shy, reserved,or lack of confidence when they will meet with the otherpeople around them. But, this is so different with Anne‟scharacter who as a child of a lively, cheerful andconfident, not making herself restrain from hersurrounding environment even though she livesdiscursively. Anne is a little girl from Green Gableswhich sometimes makes the people around her began tohate, then changes her feeling with full of love to her ormakes some people become more love her.“...And there's one thing certain, no housewill ever be dull that she's in."(Montgomery, 1980:89)The girl, who known strange and odd when thefirst met, able to create a pleasant atmosphere in everyhome that she came. Moreover, Marilla has alreadyworried with her feeling to her little girl when Anne hasjust stayed at Marilla‟s house for three weeks. Although,Marilla does not want to make sense of it becomes aredundant, because she still has a more important task, aslike to educate Anne about her respects in morality, religious, and etc.Making Anne to be a good girl, is not as easy asimagined. Because, whenever she met a new thing, shealso made a new mistake. Like, in her imagination aboutthe jump in the guest bed room that has been slept by anelderly woman. The accident is one of Anne‟s attitudes tomake all people around her felt shamefully, and turned inridiculous thing around her soon, especially for Marilla.Marilla knew when Anne has a new mistake, she tried tof<strong>ini</strong>shed it with her unique own way. Like as, Anne‟sconfession with Mrs. Josephine who fell asleep in theguest bedroom, to apologize her according her mind as anorphan. Actually, she also heard Mrs. Josephine reasonwhen she felt disturbed with Anne and Diana attitude forher. But, Anne give her reason as an orphan, she also haddisappointed because her imagination to get an honor tosleep in guest bed room has been lost. Moreover, sheexplained that she was very happy, when Mrs. Barry gaveher guest bed room for her and that is a romantic thingthat she has ever had."but I guess she didn't make much of amistake after all. If I'd a child like Annein the house all the time I'd be a better andhappier woman." (Montgomery,1980:196)9

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESWith the uniqueness that belongs by Anne, making Mrs. Josephine liked her immediately when shemet first time with Anne. Anne, who makes life Mrs.Josephine have become more color with all Anne‟scharacteristics that make it is more funny and ridiculous.By Anne‟s attitude which is favored by Mrs. Josephine, change of Mrs. Josephine‟s attitude that looked stiff andfirm with all case that she considered more dignified andrespectable, was a guest a very pleasant and generous tomake people see and hear her in amazement, and it alsomakes a pride by Marilla and Matthew Curtbert formainta<strong>ini</strong>ng their little girl.Beside that, Not only Anne‟s attitude that funnyor ridiculous, but Anne has showed her anger with awoman, who is known for her ability to get some goodissues and spread aboard in her area, becomes offendedbecause she felt her honor had been trampled as arespectable woman in her area. Indeed, not a few peopleagree with Mrs. Lynde‟s attitude because she is a womanwho too nosy with all problems that occurs in otherpeople, but not all people can brave to say their op<strong>ini</strong>onlike Anne‟s did. According the society in Avonlea, Mrs.Lynde is one of people that could be a harmful personbecause it could to defame family‟s name who gotproblem in her area. She always thought that the oddissued from her area is such hot news that all peopledeserved to enjoy and know what the problem happenedin Avonlea.Actually, the mistake that started from MrsLynde‟s op<strong>ini</strong>on that called Anne with “carrot” made herfelt angry and set by the ears of it. That makes Anne todispute with Mrs Lynde words, but it has been ensued herin big problem in Green Gables since she came in thisplace. It is indeed very unfortunate by Marilla andMatthew, but Mrs. Lynde‟s habit is also not correctentirely because no proper lady is able to say things thatare very painful for others. Although, it‟s difficult topersuade Anne for apologize about her behavior, butAnne apologize gladly ultimately because of Matthew‟swords has influenced in Anne‟s mind. In fact, when Annesaid her apologize, Anne were capable to make Mrs.lynde has been hypnotized by Anne‟s words.Anne apology is very ridiculous for Marilla. When she saw it, Marilla disbelief with Anne‟sapologized and it‟s made her to keep the joke in herheart. Because, there is unusual for a little girl in Avonleamade her apology to someone like Anne did. At the time,Anne is kneeling, her hands were closed together andasked the apologize with a face full of devoutness fromher heart, and bowed her head, making Marilla felt thatAnne‟s attitude has turned into fun. So, no wonder if Mrs.Lynde felt that she was starting to like Anne‟s self. Asexpressed by Mrs. Lynde below:"I don't get cross about other things; butI'm SO tired of being twitted about myhair and it just makes me boil right over.”(Montgomery, 1980:67)When, Mrs. Lynde said that she had been likedAnne, she begins to understand how Anne‟s attitudes andunderstand what she wants. Although Anne looks like astrange child, but Mrs. Lynde felt that Anne hassomething good in her inner, which not only brings goodto herself but also brings the good in people aroundAvonlea later. In fact, Mrs. Lynde felt surely if Anne willbe a child who is really good and will be proud of herinner. Surely, Anne will do the best for her, according towhat she had in mind even though she looks weird whento express it so that not everyone can accept it easily.Miss Barry, who was sitting behind them, leaned forward and poked Marilla in theback with her parasol."Aren't you proud of that Anne-girl? Iam," she said. (Montgomery, 1980:238)However, not all happiness is easily achievedwhen we really want it without effort and strong willing.Anne has bound in Marilla and Matthew‟s honor into thehearts of Avonlea society that their decision has made byseveral years ago was not wrong. Moreover, these twobrothers could prove that the orphans can also be verygood when she was be given the opportunity to becomebetter. However, it still did not escape from the harshupbringing, gentle, and rather a little spoiled for Anne, asMatthew has done.Actually, pampering does not mean alwaysdefend errors made by a child, but could be themotivation of a child to be able to demonstrate a positivegood in the environment. Anne has grown up with anintelligent mind, strong will, never give up attitude tolead to something better. Like, the op<strong>ini</strong>on given by Mrs.Barry about Avery who have obtained scholarships fromall her hard work and the people who support her. Prideradiates from each person who saw Anne, not onlyAvonlea society, but also people from other regions whosaw her persistence was fighting for her ideals for thesake of the people that she loved.3.2 Its Causes That Influence Anne’s ExtraversionEvery people has chance be better than before, like Anne Shirey. But, Anne‟s changes is not too far fromwhat the causes and effects to other people around her.So, the sub below will give some prove what the causesand effects that influence Anne‟s PersonalityDevelopment.3.2.1 Anne’s HistoryHuman beings are God's created more perfectly, which is given the mind and intellect to choose which isbest in life. Similarly, when human was born, has beenoutlined that those people will live in social life. From thesocial life, someone will shape the personality and

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESbehavior that is applied by the environment. However, not only the environment can shape one's personality, buttheir behavior and personality also. And, their personalityhas been formed, its will follow the changes that occur inhuman being. In addition, the formation of a person's behavior insociety is influenced by the customs and habits of peoplewho have been determined. This makes some people donot want any changes when they saw foreigners whoentered in their surroundings that has been formed. Eventhen, a foster child was taken from orphan‟s foundationin one family. As Mrs. Rachel said, when she heard newsfrom Marilla Curtbert that she will adopt of a child,"Well, Marilla, I'll just tell you plain that I think you'redoing a mighty foolish thing--a risky thing, that'swhat…..” (Montgomery, 1980:12)Anne Shirley, is an orphan who was raised by awoman helps her mother to clean her house, named Mrs.Thomas since she was still in three months old. At thattime, Anne‟s mother, Bertha Shirley, was died because ofa febrile illness. Four months next, Anne's father diedbecause the same disease with her mother. The accidentsmade Anne had to live with foreign people because herfather and mother came from a far region, so nobodyknows about their relatives.“….You see, nobody wanted me eventhen. It seems to be my fate…”.(Montgomery, 1980:38)Those words were proved that Anne do not wantto tell her sad story. When she grew in Mrs. Thomas‟shouse, she did not get the truth of affection in the family. In that house, she just worked hard to keep Mrs.Thomas‟s children because Mrs. Thomas has fourchildren that make her so busy with them, and how tohelp Mrs. Thomas to keep her house also. When herfather and mother were died, Anne felt lonely. All peoplearound her just wanted her energy to help them in theirhouse. Anne thought that nobody wants her exist if shedid not have more ability to help them to take care theirhouse or children. Anne stayed in Mrs. Thomas houseuntil she was eight years old. Mrs. Thomas husband is aboozer, and he died because he was falling out from thetrain. When Mr. Thomas was died, Mrs. Thomas wasforced to give Anne to be treated by other people, namedMrs. Hammond who also needs the girl to take care herchildren of three pairs of twins. Because, Mrs. Thomaswill stay with her mother who did not want to bring Annegather with her. So, Anne moved on in Mrs. Hammondhouse in remote place. In Mrs. Hammond‟s house, shethought that she will do anything to survive in this world. At this time, she just wants to face all challenges in frontof her without see all her past that made her sad. Annebelieves all accident is her fate that she had to face it.Moreover, she had her imagination to survive inwherever and however the situation she is.“…..I'm sure I could never have livedthere if I hadn't had an imagination.”(Montgomery, 1980:39)With her imagination in her mind, she thinksthat she can face her problem easily and forget all sensein her heart. By imag<strong>ini</strong>ng, she could have a lot of friendsto make her happy each other, real friends or unreal onelike tree, flower, river, or all things in old cupboard. When she lived with Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Hammond, she did not really have real friends to make her shareeach other. She just make her heart happy and feel nolonely when she regard the tree, river, and many thingsthat unreal which became her friends and accompaniedher in difficult condition like in Mrs. Hammond‟s house.Though, that is not all people can accept Anne‟simagination or Anne‟s said about her thought. Moreover,Anne thought that in Mrs. Hammond‟s house did nothave good place to imaginate some beautiful in her eyes. But all things in her mind, can not make hergave up with the condition. So, Anne stayed with Mrs.Hammond for two years. Then, she moved again toanother place, named orphans foundation Hopetownbecause Mr. Hammond was died. At the time, Mrs.Hammond felt that she can not take her children care andAnne also. So, she gave her children to her relatives inother places and she went to the United States. But, shealso gave Anne to one of orphan asylum in Nova Scotia.“Anne f<strong>ini</strong>shed up with another sigh, ofrelief this time.”( Montgomery,1980:39:2)This statement proved that Anne really did notwant to discuss about her past, because it make remindher about her sadness. She felt that the story is her bitterexperience in this world that she really do not want ithappened to her, and she should be forget it for comeback in her purpose that she never give up with thecondition. But, Anne Shirley was a child like others whostill want many experiences in her childhood. As like, shewant to play as long as she can with her friends, she cannot learn more seriously with something important inmoral or religious lesson, and she still like try to createher imagination in real one.Anne was born a child who has a full ofshortcomings, but also a full of advantages. Like, in thisexcerpt:"…How do you know but that it hurts ageranium's feelings just to be called ageranium and nothing else? Youwouldn't like to be called nothing but awoman all the time. Yes, I shall call itBonny. I named that cherry-treeoutside my bedroom window thismorning. I called it Snow Queenbecause it was so white. Of course, itwon't always be in blossom, but onecan imagine that it is, can't one?"(Montgomery, 1980:35)11

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESIn the statement above, it has been proven thatin addition she has a high imagination and sometimes alittle bit in wild way like she called a geranium plant withnamed "Bonnie", “Cerry tree”, or "snow queen". But,with her perspicacity, she unites her imagination with animpulsive nature, which shows the concern to thesurroundings. Not just caring for each other, but also onGod's creatures. She felt, that no right to any creature overlookedor considered unimportant. She did not want to treat thecreatures created by God with a cruel, just like otherswho treat her. Like, when someone tried to throw heraway and not bother about her happiness in this world.Ultimately, led her to the orphan asylum, which requiresthat she must survive a few months in the building that isalready overcrowded with children the same boat withher. Thus, Anne must receive that nobody really wants toAnne be stayed in orphan asylum with all herimagination.Just for a few months in orphan asylum, Annewas sent in other area, called Green Gables becauseCurtbert family asked an orphan to help them. Because ofthat, this foundation sent Anne to come that place. WhenAnne heard how the place in first time, she looked veryhappy because she can use her imagination in her newplace. According her, in orphan asylum, there is no placeto be able her imagination freely. So, she felt that she willfind her imagination place in Green gables fully."Fancy. It's always been one of mydreams to live near a brook. I neverexpected I would, though. Dreams don'toften come true, do they? Wouldn't it benice if they did? But just now I feel prettynearly perfectly happy….” (1980:20)Arriving at the Bright River station, Anne wasso happy, because in her mind she always thought aboutthe place like she sees and her dream would be come truein this place. Except she will find her place with lots ofimagination inside it, she will have people who reallywants her and takes her care as their child and to have thesame mind with her friends. But, her dream becameextinct when Marilla was spoken the statement, whichstruck her ear to enter in her deep heart. The occurrenceof misunderstandings in the provision of information andreception children make Anne increasingly resigned tothe next life."No boy! But there MUST have been aboy," insisted Marilla."We sent word to Mrs. Spencer to bring aboy." (Montgomery, 1980:25)With that statement by Marilla Curtbert said, making Anne an orphan, as returned at the beginning ofthe story when she was not wanted by any person. Moreover, Marilla really want an orphan boy who willhelp Matthew Curtbert in his farm. With the word"MUST", which makes more pain in Anne‟s heart thatshe really did not wanted by any person, especially bythose who exist now only in front because he's a girl, nota boy like they want. With Marilla‟s firmness, woman who has nevermarried and has a kid, she also just lived with heryounger brother, named Matthew Curtbert, a man whowas also unmarried, who never talk with a girl, but hejust talk with two woman in his place, named Mrs.Rachel Lynde and his sister, Marilla Curtbert. Both ofthem just stared at each other, a sign of confusion facingthis misunderstanding. This, makes Marilla Curtbertbring her pertinacious nature and going to extreme inherself to determine what must she does for Anne, nomatter what her attitude will harm these child or not.“...Oh, this is the most TRAGICAL thingthat ever happened to me!”(1980:26)This expression shows that the incidence of thismisunderstanding in child‟s deliver from orphan asylummakes her feel more unwanted than ever before. Annewas taken over by Mrs. Thomas to Mrs. Hammond andMrs. Hammond to the orphan asylum, that is no morepainful than what she experienced today in the familyCurtbert. Because, she felt that she threw up in thestrange world that she has just knew when she passedalong the road to Green Gables. Moreover, Anne stillhear what Marilla said that make her felt hurt to strike herout that because she just did not need a girl in her house, even to take her care.At that time, Anne just quiet and did not doanything, she just contemplates her fate which she hadreceived all the day. Although, she suffered a very greatdistress, she tried to survive with his imagination, although sometimes she only gave up with the conditionin once, but she's trying to survive. Shortly, Anne andMarilla went to Mrs. Spencer to rectify the problemhappened in her house. Initially, Anne still looks gloomywith the circumstances she faced, but after her throughthe streets of which she is a beautiful place, sheimmediately got up and developed a smile back to bringher imagination again.Marilla who are not familiar with the attitude ofa girl who talks too much, making Anne to be quiet toobey what Marilla wants to be. However, Marilla askedAnne to tell about her past, from her birth until she waseleven years old today. With all that is told, no one feltgood, even always a long sigh to remember all the eventsof her past. What a starved, unloved life she had had--a life of drudgery and poverty andneglect; for Marilla was shrewd enough toread between the lines of Anne's historyand divine the truth. (Montgomery,1980:40)After Marilla listened all story from Anne,Marilla had compassion on her and realized that a littlegirl beside her, needs her and Matthew to be her family.Marilla felt that Anne never has a truly family as long asshe lived. For many years, Anne just knows about how to

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESsurvive with all the condition that demands her to be hardworker in her childhood. In once, Anne originally feltdesperate with whether all she experienced in her life, like she almost arrive in Mrs. Spencer to return her backin orphan asylum or bring her away to go in new family. But, Anne‟s willing was answering when she heard thatMarilla change her mind to take her back to the GreenGables. Suddenly, Anne‟s face to be shine because of shegot a chance to be Curtbert family hopefully.Oh, GLAD doesn't seem the right word atall. I was glad about the White Way andthe cherry blossoms--but this! Oh, it'ssomething more than glad. I'm sohappy. I'll try to be sogood. (Montgomery, 1980:50)From a ray of hope from Marilla said in Mrs.Spencer‟s house, she did not want anything to break herhappiness to hope new thing, as one miracle for her life.Until, Marilla has decided to take Anne care in her housewith all education in many things. In this family, Anne isstarting to get various kinds of moral and religiousteachings. In addition, she gained experience on how tobehave well in interacting with others to be special girl inAvonlea, especially in Curtbert family. Not only that, thewarmth of a family, providing an important influence toshape Anne into a girl who is wise and responsible withall education little by little by in her each age andexperience that she gets during she stay in the Avonlea.3.2.2 Anne’s ExperiencesEvery person has a life story by themselves andhistory in their life. They also have some solution fortheir problem by themselves. So do too, with the stepsthat they will take to solve their problem, whether theytake the solution towards good direction or wrongdirection. In every decision that they took to continuetheir lives, it could be their experience for movingtowards a better way or receive it resignedly to theirsituation what they faced. Whether they consider it agood experience or bad experience, basically people havethe power to regulate their behavior that they will take togo through a period of their lives. As like, parents who always think and do thebest for their children, they decided to make the rule thatwill protect their children from bad effect in the outside. But, parents can not be take them care all the time, sotheir children will make decision, whether they choosethe good way or bad way for their life. Every decisionwhat children took always give them option to take badeffect or good effect around them. Because, our allattitude depends on with how we can choose what kind ofour surrounding to change our attitude be better side. Moreover, all experience we got that it can make us bemature and be careful to decide all thing in our life infront of them. As like, Anne‟s experience by the maincharacter in this novel, Anne Shirley.Indeed, Anne Shirley is a child who is born to beabandoned by her parents because of fever illnessessuffered by both parents. And she was born to get a moreinteresting life experience or even more miserable. However, she never felt more desperate to continue herlife in the world that could be considered cruel by anorphan, who has no relatives anymore. Like as, what sheexperienced when she was three months, was unable tocall or even to see her parents.I do wish she'd lived long enough for meto remember calling her mother. I think itwould be so sweet to say `mother,' don'tyou? And father died four daysafterwards from fever too. That left mean orphan and folks were at their wits'end, so Mrs. Thomas said, what to dowith me. You see, nobody wanted meeven then. It seems to be my fate.(Montgomery, 1980:38)When told her past to Marilla Curtbert, she saidit also still wants to see her mother and father any longerand called as the father and mother as the child did in herages against in her parents. Moreover, as a child as youngas three months, she could almost feel that moment theworld does not want her, even a woman who helped hermother to clean her house, which was forced to bring herhome to her house. In fact, at that Anne was not really considered asa foster child but rather to become a nanny of Mrs.Thomas‟s four children. Anne felt what happened to hersis a life line that still must be followed even if it feltbitter. It is seen as a desire she wants to call aunt Marillaas her aunt."I'd love to call you Aunt Marilla," saidAnne wistfully (Montgomery, 1980:50)With the statement above, she felt that she wasorphaned as a child needs someone who actually admitsher that she has been owned in Curtbert family fully. Infact, she really wanted to enter in Curtbert family, because she wanted to have a family that will love hereven though it's completely different ways in her truthfamily. She knows that she just foster child that must besomeone who obedient in Curtbert family as she doesbefore in other house.Marilla is a woman who was tall and thin, withbones protruding, with no indentation of her body. Part ofhis black hair had been filled with white hair began togrow in her head fully. Hair is formed into a small bunand reinforced by two wire pin prick. She looks like arigid woman, has little experience, and a little humoralthough sometimes it seems if there must be pull to getthem out. Eventhough, Marilla was famous with herexplicitness, but she has full of affection and love withpeople around hers. She just only has never marriage andhas a child to open her love up in her environment. However, she differs with her brother nature,Matthew Curtbert, a man who rarely left the house, so the13

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESonly things that are very important which could force himto leave his house. He also included a man who was shyand hate to situations that make him in the middle ofpeople who do not know him and required him to justtalk. However, he has much of loving nature and highconcern to the people he knew.Gathered with family Curtbert, is the mostbeautiful thing that eventually found by Anne after sheexperienced periods of unpleasant almost eleven years.Previously, Anne just becomes babysitter of Mrs.Thomas and Mrs. Hammond children, the day by day justbusy with caring for and supervising their children. So,it‟s no surprised if she got Marilla anger when she failedto do her duties as a child at Marilla‟s house.Unlike the previous tasks, at Marilla‟s house,Anne gets the job like a child in need of a decenteducation, either academic or non academic.Academically, Anne get the task of schooling, while nonacademic,Anne receive sewing tra<strong>ini</strong>ng, embroidery, cooking, and even farming at Marilla‟s house. Marillaregarded that Anne negligence is a mistake from a lazychildren and unwilling to learn, but if Marilla viewedfrom the past, Anne just want to be have fun while herchildhood are taken for almost eleven years."But remember this in all your planning,Anne. You're not going to play all thetime nor most of it. You'll have yourwork to do and it'll have to be donefirst."(Montgomery, 1980:77)Marilla statement above also mentioned thatAnne has tasks like other kids, who still need guidancefrom their parents. Anne was indeed a child who has astrong imagination, because her imagination whichallows hers to survive all the trials in her life. Like, whenthe words are visible Anne admire the scenery a long wayto Green Gables. Thus, Anne‟s words hypnotizedMatthew who as a shy and can not be talkative person. They should call it--let me see--the WhiteWay of Delight. Isn't that a niceimaginative name? When I don't like thename of a place or a person I alwaysimagine a new one and always think ofthem so. (Montgomery, 1980:22) orBecause, you see, if the bridge DIDcrumple up I'd want to SEE itcrumple. What a jolly rumble it makes! Ialways like the rumble part ofit. (Montgomery, 1980:23)Words that are rarely used by a child, has beenused Anne in great detail so that making Matthew thinksthat the child who has been carried from Bright River isnot a child who has soul as a child that she makes asusual, but she is a lively children, intelligent, andsensitive to her surroundings. She was so concerned withher surroundings and not missed anyone from all what isin front of her eyes that to be an experience that made herhappier than anything. With her imagination, not only made beautifulscenery but in Anne‟s eyes, Anne appearance was alsomade her beautiful in her eyes. On Anne‟s physical, Annehas some unique things that are not owned by the otherkids as like, red hair, cheeks full of red spots, and a thinbody that is more visible the bones are sticking on Anne.Because she has the physical appearance that is differentfrom other little girl, she always imagined that her redhair will turn on black color or beautiful dark brown, smooth cheek with no red spots, and also a fuller bodyand plump, with sweet grooves like dimples in her elbow. Her imagination continues to grow in everyperson who she meets a beautiful person, exciting in herheart, then her thought wants to get the same thing on herbody. Thus, when there is someone who mocked herappearance, especially her hair, she felt upset and biganger that can not be dammed again, which couldexplode any time. It is seen in one accident happened to awoman, Marilla neighbor, named Mrs. Rachel Lynde, was a guest in the Marilla house, mocked Anne‟s hairwith red as a "carrot" in front of her eyes. This called, made her rage to be big anger and make her should berequired her to say whether all pain in her heart."I hate you," she cried in a choked voice, stamping her foot on the floor. "I hateyou--I hate you--I hate you--" a louderstamp with each assertion ofhatred. "How dare you call me skinnyand ugly? How dare you say I'm freckledand redheaded? You are a rude, impolite, unfeeling woman!"(Montgomery,1980:58)In the above statement, indicates that Anne isjust a child who also wants to be like other girls withouthaving to mention all her shortcomings. With all her saidwith the words "hate" show that she felt very devastatedand undeserved anyone mocked her for her shortcomingsthat she also really did not want it. Anne felt anything inher body was given by God and no one was allowed toprotest because it has given from God for her. However, with all the ridicule that given by others, Anne just wanther surrounding accept her as like others child in thisplace. Because, she felt uncomfortable with herenvironment viewed when they looked Anne so strangefrom the others. So, she looked so angry when all peoplemocked her or just focused on her debility and they didnot really care with all things in her inner.I suppose you think I have an awfultemper, but I couldn't help it.(Montgomery, 1980:61)The statement above proved that Anne canaccept all her debility has been mocked with others. Sheknew that she is not good looking like other girls inAvonlea but, she still keeps her hope to her looking infuture that would be change when she grows up. After theaccident happened, Marilla tries to talk with Anne to tellwhich one the best that if we want to give our bestattitude in front of our environment. But, that is not easy

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESto talk with Anne because she has felt hurt with all Mrs.Lynde‟s said and she just wants her temperament shouldbe understood by Marilla. Marilla is a woman who kepther moral value in her principle, so that‟s why she mustwarn her foster child that she did wrong and incongruousattitude with someone who is older than her. Marillareally disappointed if she has a child disobey with herrule or all the things that had been given by her to beuseless in Anne‟s mind. Even less, Anne also does thesame accident that showed her temperament in her friendeyes, especially Gibert Blythe. It‟s happened becauseGilbert said the same word like Mrs. Lynde‟s said, that‟scalled Anne with “carrot” name.Gilbert Blythe is the man who classmate withAnne, but his age was nearly fourteen years. Becausefour years ago, his father fell ill in serious condition, soits make that he was late in his learning. In past, Gilberthad an in with his class because he always be a leaderand many children still love him like before because hehas good looking from his face and his body. Besides hisexcess, he also like disturb his friends inquisitively, especially his girl friends who did not bother him if hewas watching one of girl in his class, including AnneShirley. At the time, Anne felt that there is no boy whocan substitute her viewed from the scenery in front of herso she do not care with her surrounding, including GilbertBlythe. So, because of Gilbert wants Anne‟s attention, hetried to disturb Anne with his word that called Anne with“Carrot”. Unsuspected, Anne shows her angry in front ofher friends."You mean, hateful boy!" she exclaimedpassionately. "Howdareyou!"(Montgomery, 1980:95)Once again, she showed her bad behavior infront of others, in her friends and teacher. Then, sheimmediately came to Gilbert and whammed the slate onGilbert's head and broke it. The same thing happened inMarilla‟s house when Mrs. Lynde has said the same wordfor Anne. When Anne heard the word, Anne came toMrs. Lynde with show her fury face and she whammedthe table to the floor directly. Moreover, Anne adds herbad attitude with mocked Mrs. Lynde that she is a cruelwoman who felt hurt an orphan‟s child with all badwords for Anne. Because of Anne‟s attitude, not onlyCurtbert‟s family surprised with Anne‟s attitude, but alsoher friend, teacher, and people surrounding know aboutAnne‟s bad attitude. She knew that she has all child‟s badattitude and improperly, if the child has bad attitude likeshe does in Mrs. Lynde and Gilbert‟s face. But, she doesnot want someone mocked her shortage because she stillkeeps her hope to get some special in her body, likebeautiful dark hair, smoothest cheeks with no spot, sharpnose, and dark eyes. She felt it‟s so romantic to be abeautiful girl and looked her with all her beauty, but noone mocked her shortage again that made her tired withit. The incident has made Anne felt that she hassensitive soul which is felt hurt like a loud crack andcould make other people feel the pain that she felt. Afterthe incident, she decided there was no point to make afriend with boy who had hurt her with the word. But, it‟sso contrast with what she was done to Mrs. Lynde.Although, Anne has emotion which can blow top oncetimes, but she still upholds the decency to people who areolder than her. She just needs to hostile feelings towardher peers that had afflicted her. Actually, Anne was stillable to understand her physical condition other than thatinsulted her hair. So that‟s why, she did not wantapologize Gilbert easily. However, the incident was made by Anne as anambitious to beat her enemy to achieve superior. GilbertBlythe is a smart boy in her class. Therefore, Anne feltthat she can not let him to be a winner in each lesson inthis school. Besides that, she also did not want to seeCurtbert family disappoint with her achievement, especially Matthew Curtbert, who her soul mate inAvonlea. She felt that she always make lots of mistaketoward Curtbert family, so with her achievement shewant to show her excess in her behavior and Curtbertfamily can take pride in her in Avonlea. She studied all materials diligently to bring onerank in each level. In Avonlea, Anne was famous withher intelligent and obedient child even that she alwaysmakes a mistake from her imagination because she cannot abdicate her viewed from scenery in Green Gablesthat she loved. In addition, she is a child who will learnsomething new quickly and willing to work so hard. However, the most disturbing her concentration inperforming the task is her delusion in the middle of doingher job. And she will go back to real life with areprimand or a disaster that she had received as aconsequent from her careless.Like, she did one act together with Diana in onenight. After she and Diana came back from watching theshow in the city, they are already to go sleep in guestroom with the competition between them. But,unconsciously she got a person has been slept in theirroom, named Aunt Josephine. Not only, Aunt Josephineshocked with the condition, but also Anne and Dianasurprised and disappointed at once that their bedroom hasbeen used for Diana‟s aunt from far region. AuntJosephine is one of woman who always upholds moralvalue and decency from young girl. From the incident, itmakes Aunt Josephine angry with them because shethought that the young girl must do their attitude properlyin honorable family like Mrs. Barry‟s family. AccordingMrs. Josephine, Anne and Diana do bad attitude withjumped in guest bed room quickly with noisy voice inmiddle of the night. So that‟s way, she also feel that shemust punish them, especially Diana, to cancel her willingto give her help to pay Diana‟s piano course and give agift for Diana."It's because you're too heedless andimpulsive, child, that's what. You neverstop to think--whatever comes into yourhead to say or do you say or do it without15

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESa moment's reflection."(Montgomery,1980:132)Initially, Mrs. Barry was offered her guest roomfor Anne and Diana sleep inside. But, because of AuntJosephine had came early, Anne and Diana can not sleepin the guest room. Jumping into bedroom in guest room, surely this takes from Anne‟s idea because she wasfantasizing about how happiness with always be in herheart if Anne and Diana went to bed followed by a jokewhile running even though it was late at night. Moreover, without they are realizing their actions that have made anold woman disturbed in the middle of her sleep. In a statement given by Mrs. Lynde to show thatAnne is a child who never thought about the things thatshe did right or wrong, or even have an impact on others. With a reckless and impulsive nature, which isaccompanied with a wild imagination in her mind, notinfrequently she got in troubles with all the tasks that isgiven by Marilla. As with Anne‟s carelessness when shedid not close her sauce pudding was told by Marilla, which is ultimately makes a mouse died in it. Worse yet,Anne did not throw it in directly, so this makes Marillaalmost presents her pudding sauce one of honor lady inAvonlea.Again, she forgot to enter flour when she makesbread, but actually the flour is the basic ingredient formaking bread, and her cakes failed miserably. Then, while daydreaming, Anne poured the pot of milk creaminto stitching basket in the cupboard, and not in thebucket of pig food. Except it, she has ever plunged intothe river when she tried to walk in the side of the woodenbridge because she can not to stop her imagination to seeher circumstances surrounding over her.Small errors of her imagination, sometimeswithout her knowing it involves someone else, such asMarilla because of her actions. But, there has in incidentthat makes Marilla is more embarrass than others whichis happened when Anne put the flowers on her hat in herfirst school. Shortly, Anne felt her imagination roomwhen she saw lots of children use many kinds of flowerto festoon their hat. And, Anne also wants use lots offlower to look like other children who she saw."I never thought you'd mind. The rosesand buttercups were so sweet and pretty Ithought they'd look lovely on myhat. Lots of the little girls had artificialflowers on their hats....”(Montgomery,1980:73)When Anne was doing something according toher imagine, she felt proud of herself that can be happierwithout she hurts someone else, although unrealizedAnne also involves other people come look embarrassedin front of everyone in Avonlea. However, instead of allthat, Anne ever faced her past events that more horriblethan other incident with little mistakes that she ever did.Although it is not entirely Anne‟s fault, but this is stillAnne‟s mistake because Anne‟s carelessness to let it onher minds with her imagination. She just always use herimagination to make her happy in all situation withoutpay attention to her surroundingsThis incident happened when Anne was wrongto put the wine for Diana, but she thought that she takethe bottled of raspberry juice for Diana. Initially, Marillapermitted Anne to serve Diana with her raspberry juice, but Anne took the wrong bottle. Because of herimagination to make Diana and her happy with tea partyin Anne‟s home, Anne did not try or look what is in thebottle before she give the bottle for Diana. This mistakenmade Anne get lost Mrs. Barry belief to be Diana‟sfriend. Except it, others incident is happened by Annebecause she give her cake with taste of anodyne oil. Inone occasion, she asked Marilla to invite couple of pastorin their house like their neighbor did. Because of it, Annewants serve the pastor‟s wife with her cake that she madeit by herself. When she will give the vanila taste for hercake, she makes a mistake to give it with anodyne taste inher cake. But, she really did not know what the taste in itbecause she got influenza at the time and made her cannot try the taste.Actually, this is not Anne‟s fault fully becauseMarilla is also made a mistake that put the anodyne in thebottle of vanila. But, from the incident made Anne feltembarrass because of her carelessness and made her topromise that never does the mistake in twice. At thattime, she felt great shame and guilty because of events goway beyond that‟s really her expected. Moreover, because of her carelessness, she is almost felt in paintremendously when she would be kept away from herbest friend, Diana Barry. However, periods of Anne to enjoy herimagination did not stop even though she has been mademany mistakes before. Though, she realized that therehad been many mistakes she did, but it did not make herto do something else that can affect her own life.According Anne, the honor that must be maintained byAnne when she accepted the challenge of Josie Pye. Atthat time, she did not want if there are other people ahead of her. So, she took the challenge from Josie Pye towalk on top of Mrs. Barry‟s kitchen roof."I must do it. My honor is at stake," saidAnne solemnly.(Montgomery, 1980:154)Although, Anne certainly knew what she wasexperiencing was a bad thing, but her obstinate made herto take the challenge because her honor is more importantthan her own life, though she knew that it‟s so reallydangerous for her. And, it requires her to accept what herfriend‟s willing because she did not want she lost herself-esteem that just because she does not accept thechallenge."But you have such strength of mind,Marilla. I haven't. I just felt that Icouldn't bear Josie Pye's scorn. Shewould have crowed over me all mylife. And I think I have been punished so

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESmuch that you needn't be very cross withme, Marilla....”. (Montgomery, 1980:157)The statement above proved that she had beenrealized, though without being scolded by Marilla also, she has gained something worthwhile with her actions, which only she felt alone, like she got simple fracture thatrequired her to take a rest for seven weeks that made herwere bored at home. However, Anne still look cheerfulbecause she still has the imagination that can comeanytime she wants, and Anne are very thankful for it.Because of her imagination, which keeps her at home forlong without activity, as usually she was doing that isrunning along in around of the river, Barry‟s lake or justclimbing trees.Although Anne has been getting rewarded ineach of her actions, she never changes her mind to makeher to be a beautiful person. She felt that her willing to bea beautiful is bigger than to be smart person. AccordingAnne, to hope of becoming a beautiful remains a prioritybecause Anne tired with all ridicule that was brought upfrom others because her hair was red. Actually, it is notpurely from an Anne‟s minds who want to change thecolor of her hair, but she want to help a man fromGermany who tried to sell anything to bring his familyout of Germany. Because that's pity, she finally takes hersavings to buy something and she found a hair dye thatwill change her hair color to be jet-black. But, after shepractices on her hair, she did not get a beautiful color butshe got a horrible color in her hair. Her hair colorchanged to be a more gruesome, with the green color.“....In a trice I saw myself with beautifulraven-black hair and the temptation wasirresistible.....” (Montgomery, 1980:180)At that time, she felt tempted for her beauty thatshe will receive after she wear her hair dye was inaccordance with what she heard from the seller, becauseshe had dreamed it so long to change her hair. Initially, she did not doubt the seller‟s word because she reallywants miracle that will change in her hair. But, Anneknew that the seller had deceived her, because her hairlooked more frightening than before, and it‟s made her toaccept other person‟s mock if they know what the reason.Following the imagination which is too muchsometimes makes a child do not know which one is realor not. For them, their fantasy is their world that can notbe separated from themselves, who always followed themto meet their little world fully. Like, when Anne wasimag<strong>ini</strong>ng that she was fairy tales world, a story that shemade herself with various sets of imagination. However,a child does not ever realize that their imagination canendanger their lives sometimes.Sometimes, as a child, they would be used theirimagination in all the way, but it is not infrequently thatchild would be used their imagination in wrong way. Aswe saw in this story, that Anne used her imagination thatwill be endanger her life when she play a part in herstory, as Elaine, she almost ankle deep with her boats inthe river. In that role, Anne as a weak woman lying on alifeboat, and must be washed away into the river until thebridge down. Unsuspected, Anne‟s boat will be sink inthe middle of river, because Anne‟s boat collides withsharp pole in the river sides when Anne and her friendspull the boat powerfully.Whereas at the time, when Anne closed her eyesand slept in the boat, Anne felt the romantic condition inthe boat and she was happy with the condition. But, somedanger came to her that made her must save her life anddid not care with the romantic condition again. Luckily, when she has grasped tree branch, Gilbert came in ontime to save Anne‟s life. Because of it, Anne has just feltthat her imagination went to in wrong way, so after theincident, she realized that she will bring her imaginationin right way or positive way.“....Under such circumstances you don'tthink much about making a floweryprayer. But mine was answered, for theflat bumped right into a pile for a minuteand I flung the scarf and the shawl overmy shoulder and scrambled up on a bigprovidential stub....” (Montgomery,1980:186)Though, Anne in danger condition, she still usedher sophisticated words to show her feeling when she indanger situation. This statement above proved that child‟simagination can not be lost in one time. Instead, thechildren will be used their imagination in dangercondition that they will to imagine what they face if theyhave lost their life because the romantic thing in theirmind. Imagination in wrong way would be taken somelessons for the children as their experience to face theirfuture without the same mistake in past. Like, allincidents that was happened by Anne before, as someexperience that can become a part of her history that theywould be written in their lives. Without experiences, theydid not know which one the good or bad experience, theycan not differ which the best for them in future.3.2.3 The Environment and Its SituationIn our society, we probably will not run awayfrom every problem from the society eyes who alwaysgive attention to us if we have done something wrong orgood. Basically, society is a factor that can influence allour behavior. Their op<strong>ini</strong>ons about us as a hard crack or itcan be fresh breeze for us if we understand very wellwhat they meant. Sometimes, their op<strong>ini</strong>ons that willmature us in all condition, so we can survive in a worldthat can be exacerbate our behavior increasingly. The environment‟s op<strong>ini</strong>on that given to us isnot going to see who we are, what our background or seewhat our reason when we made a mistake. Because noone op<strong>ini</strong>ons that make us miserable, but on the contraryit will make us able to through all the trials andchallenges of life. But, it depends on us personally,17

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESwhether we can accept it with open heart, or even thatseemed to make it feel like a slap which is like theop<strong>ini</strong>on will insult us in our mind. Someone said in hiswritings, that the Honorary grow and develop not becauseof fear but of love. People who like to intimidate andcreate fear, essentially they tarnished their own honormottle. With all the bitterness that received Anne in herlife, is not easy when she did it. Because, Anne called asordinary children when she born and she only worked asa baby sitter until her age is in ten years, is not easy whenAnne remembered the moment. At the moments, shenever felt that treated as a child who still needs parentallove, family, or people around her. Until, she movedsomewhere that in part can accept her presence but justnot a few people who also rejected her.“....You're bringing a STRANGE childinto your house and home and you don'tknow a single thing about him nor whathis disposition is like nor what sort ofparents he had nor how he's likely to turnout....”(Montgomery, 1980:12)The statement "a strange child ..." is the nameMrs. Lynde to a foster child, an orphan who accidentallytaken by Marilla Curtbert of orphans foundation in NovaScotia to help care for Matthew plantation. According toMrs. Lynde, her fears with a foreign child is veryreasonable because it has a lot of mass media who aboutthe bizarre behavior of a foster child. Like, a kid whotried to kill her foster parents by burning down the houseof his foster father, and a daughter who dared to tease hisfoster father, and etc. This makes Mrs. Lynde felt that sheneeded to remind Marilla to be more careful in makingdecisions about taking a foster child. Moreover, Marilla did not know how thebackground or past of the child. Like, how her family, and what reason the child was thrown by her parents. Inaddition, not only in the past that must be considered, butalso how to Marilla in parenting a child. Because Mrs.Lynde was also a mother, she was also concerned aboutthe lack of proper parenting Marilla against a child. Witha Marilla background who has never married and nevertreated a child, making Mrs. Lynde was also felt pity forthe child to be cared for by Marilla.Mrs. Rachel Lynde is a woman skilled inmanaging their households. A woman who has been busywith various activities, such as working on sewingbusiness and helping to take care of the school week, butthat would still be able to investigate something odd ishappening in their area. In fact, she will never stop to findout why and how it was done to successfully find theinformation needed to satisfy her heart. Thus, Mrs. Lyndeas a woman who is an influential person in thatenvironment, because the news is good or bad willimmediately spread if Mrs. Lynde already knew thenews."….There were three plates laid….,butthe dishes were everyday dishes and therewas only crab-apple preserves and onekind of cake,…."( Montgomery, 1980:10)The statement above is one of Mrs. Lynde habitsbefore asks what would happen at her friend's house.Three plate were intended that Marilla was waiting forsomeone who is awaited, but the other wedge is Marillaonly provide eating utensils are mediocre, which meansthe guest is not anticipated that a special guest. Because,Marilla or other citizens will provide the special eatingequipment, if they invited important guest, as the pastorand his wife, a doctor, or visit a neighbor who noblemanor gentleman. Moreover, Marilla dishes that are only servedher marshmallow from two classes and one kind ofconfectionery cake. However, she saw Matthew used hiswhite shirt and his reddish brown horse. This is ananomaly that occurred at her friend‟s home because itwas not usually if Marilla want to invite someone if itwas not necessary and Matthew will only use his mare itfor important affairs. According to Mrs. Lynde, GreenGables which usually calm and not makes themselves inthis mysterious that made her in little confused and needto ask immediately to Marilla.Briefly, Marilla immediately told about what thepurpose of Matthew's departure to the station until thedishes that had been prepared by Marilla for a foster childfrom the orphanage foundation in Nova Scotia. Afterhearing all of them, Mrs. Lynde was immediately tried tostop and think carefully what she would do regardless ofwhether the op<strong>ini</strong>on given that would be offended Marillaor not. Mrs. Lynde felt that was not only foster boys areable to do reckless, but also foster girls. But, Marillaasserted that she would not care for the girl because sheonly needs a young boy to help Matthew who is caringfor his plantation. But, human is only capable of planning but whathappens is not as expected by Marilla. Because, whenMatthew came back from the station, he even brought agirl not a boy. This misconception makes Marilla furiousand confused what she must to do for the child. SinceMrs. Lynde says about all the ugliness of an adoptedchild that occurred in various regions, making Marilla isno longer excited and hesitant to the raised of a fosterchild. Especially, when it is taken by Matthew is adaughter, a child of the most that avoided by Marilla.According to Marilla, girls can be much more desperateto do something that is not better than a boy."…I daren't trust you to put it outyourself. You'd likely set the place onfire." (Montgomery, 1980:29)The above quote does show that Marilla mistrusttowards an adopted child becomes excessive than everbefore. The words have been spoken by Mrs. Lynde, indirectly had an influence on behavior exhibited byMarilla to Anne. With the early goal which only requires

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESa boy to help Matthew, Marilla felt that she did notrequire the presence of a young girl at her home. Marillaconsidered a futile thing if she picked up a girl, besidesshe is not able to help Matthew, she also did not want shegot the fate to her and her brother ended in death orshameful thing as claimed by Mrs. Lynde about badattitude from foster daughter. With the obstinate of Marilla held in each whenshe wants something and decides something, makesMatthew prefer silence than has to argue with Marillabecause it is useless thing. That way, is only Marilla whocan decide whether Anne could stay at home or not.Marilla is a woman who upholds the moral values on thebehavior of every girl child in its region. But, when shesaw Anne the first, Marilla did not like the nature ofAnne directly who always speaks to follow what she hasin mind."Oh, she can talk fast enough. I saw thatat once. It's nothing in her favour, either. Idon't like children who have so much tosay…” (Montgomery, 1980:30)Marilla thought that a girl should not have theability to speak too much quickly. Anne with animpulsive nature, combined with too much imaginationmakes Marilla really did not want a little orphan girl, especially Anne. However, in contrast to the op<strong>ini</strong>on ofthe spoken Matthew about a Anne that according toMatthew, Anne is a small creature that is reallyinteresting. Because of the words that spoken by Anne allthe way from the station to the Green Gables, has beenentertained Matthew, even he was follow in Anne‟simagination. For Matthew, known as a man of quiet, shy, anda man who still have to try hard and have a hard timewhen he would talk to a girl. Anne is only one girl whomakes Matthew fell more comfortable while she wasnearby. In fact, he does not need to talk a lot to respondto what was said by Anne, she just listened, because that'swhat made Matthew interested with Anne. So, in thedebate with Marilla, Matthew is still trying to maintainAnne to stay in Green Gables, although he also prefers togive a decision on Marilla, because he realized thatMatthew and Marilla have one job for themselves that ifit was related to home affairs, Marilla had to decide aboutall inside, but Matthew had the job to take care hisplantation and agriculture in outside.Although, Marilla must think all about Annethat she must accept her or not for long time in GreenGables, but Anne was accepted to come along in Curtbertfamily‟s house finally. Actually, Marilla has manyreasons that‟s why she must take Anne‟s care in herhouse because in firstly, Marilla does not want a Anne, who a child has a sensitive nature and high imag<strong>ini</strong>ngbeing treated by a woman named Mrs. Peter Blewett, who is famous for its bad behavior and the stingy natureto be her housekeeper. For second, Marilla knew thatMatthew wanted to accompany Anne and alwaysenterta<strong>ini</strong>ng him. In addition, Matthew wanted to besomeone who could be useful for Anne. Third, Marillawants to teach Anne for something that could make amoral, religious, and like a girl to be proud of because ofcompassion that fills her heart when she heard Anne‟sstory in past that until now expect to be able to have areal house, full of affection she could not before. However, to become part of the Curtbert family,Anne must fulfill all its obligations as a child like a littlegirl who honored even though it looks doubtful inMarilla‟s eyes. The first time Marilla saw Anne, Annehas been shown that the nature that is too much talk, impulsivity when imagination meets her head. In fact,Marilla knows about Anne‟s temperament characteristicswhen its physical properties, especially her hair teased bysomeone suddenly. Changes in Anne‟s personality thatsuddenly makes Marilla felt responsible for more extrateach morals to be taught from early parenting.“All "spirit and fire and dew," as she was,the pleasures and pains of life came to herwith trebled intensity. Marilla felt this andwas vaguely troubled over it, ….” or“Therefore Marilla conceived it to be herduty to drill Anne into a tranquiluniformity of disposition as impossibleand alien to her as to a dancing sunbeamin one of the brookshallows….”(Montgomery, 1980:150)According to Marilla, a symbol of the spirit thatis inside of Anne signifies about perseverance to face ofbittersweet in her life. That is, Anne passion in life nevergoes out because she's got imagination. Because herimagination, Anne can imagine something bad from herview into something beautiful in her mind, surpassing theoriginal. The symbol of fire is a sign of her nature thatsuddenly flare up, when receiving a thing contrary to herconscience. Thus, the nature of her fire to make her arebel or even a child she became a child who suddenlyhas high temper and no one can beat him at that time. While the dew symbol, indicating Anne‟s nature thatfilled with love and can be soothing anyone who needs itwithout realizing it by the people around her. So it's nowonder many people prefer like it because it's Anne. However, the three symbols that can makeMarilla worried because Anne has impulsively that canmake herself who can not choose the best that she mustles or add in her intensity to show her nature with aroundher. By Anne has a character like that, making herselfwill feel great adversity if she were to fail or she willactually float if it was intoxicated until the successfollowing her. Because of three symbols, Marilla felt thathas a duty to protect or control Anne‟s nature to be acalm girl in all situation possibility. As like, the incidentwhen Anne‟s impulsive nature arises when she and Dianaoccurred after they saw the exhibition in the city.Initially, she and Diana told each other how theyfeel when they were seeing the exhibition in the city.Anne told about her imagine that if she was in the stage19

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESlike all participant and made her as a center from all guestbecause her voice when she reads the declamation in theexhibition. Meanwhile, Diana told about the appearanceof Gilbert Blythe, but Anne who a person that still felthurt with Gilbert‟s word that was in no mood to hear hisname, she immediately turned the Diana‟s attention forgoing racing toward the bed guest and jumping on thebedroom. However, unexpected that in bedroom has beenoccupied by Diana‟s Aunt, named Mrs. Josephine Barry.Such carryings on in a respectablehouse!" (1980:269) or"I don't think it is any excuse for you thatyou were only in fun. Little girls neverindulged in that kind of fun when I wasyoung....” (Montgomery, 1980:134)Aunt Josephine came from Charlottetown whowas about seventy years old. She was among those whostiff and firm in mainta<strong>ini</strong>ng the attitude and behavior asa respectable woman. Anne and Diana had made amistake that made Josephine's aunt wanted to leaveAvonlea and cancel to help for pay music lessons forDiana. With the above quotation, it is clear that Anne hasimpulsive nature to make her is more carelessness withall her surrounding. Even with her behave, she caninvolve her friends or foster in the problems or got theother person would be in dangerous. It‟s proved when shewants to invite Diana for tea party in her house. Actually,Anne wants to serve as well as she can but, she did notrealize that she does a mistake with their drinking. Annesupposed that she give a raspberry juice for Diana, butshe really did not know that she give a wine for Diana.Because of it, Diana‟s mother did not believe with Annefully because her carelessness made her daughter will indangerous.Although, it is not entirely Anne‟s fault, butAnne still make a mistake because she did not payattention firstly what will be served for her guest. She justfelt her imagination to make a beautiful story or view inher mind. Filled with happy feelings too much that makesAnne forget to check what kinds of dish that is availablewhich does not jeopardize her guest. Thus, Diana'smother must keep her daughter away from Anne‟sattitude what has been done by Anne to Diana. Moreover,Diana came home alone with a laugh and talk lonely, sothe next day Diana was experiencing severe headachespowerfully. Indeed, Anne truly unforgivable doing byMrs. Barry because of her carelessness makes Diana'sdoing inappropriate things, which made a respectable girlin Avonlea."I don't think you are a fit little girl forDiana to associate with. You'd better gohome and behave yourself."(Montgomery, 1980:111)The statement above proved about how theanger and disbelief with Anne‟s behave when Anne hasthought all her imagination, she always take less care ofher environment. As a result of Anne‟s carelessness,Anne has been viewed by around her as children who hasbad tempers and inappropriate that to pal up with girlwho comes from respectable circle, like Diana Barry.Because Mrs. Barry felt that Anne‟s attitude can harmand give bad impact on Diana‟s personality developmentin her future. Therefore, Mrs. Barry forbids therelationships between Anne and Diana after the incidentdirectly. With this Incident, surely Marilla thought thather little girl will make new mistake whenever she wants.Because, Marilla thought that Anne is never far off fromall problem around her, so it makes her to have extraenergy to think how she will educate and lead Anne in abetter way.Marilla was never treated a child, but she feltthat many difficulties will be faced her in all situation togive many lesson in academic or non-academic becauseAnne is unique little girl who has ever met. In abovequotation, indicates how to educate a little girl, Annewhom has the feeling that always whirl around from thesadness to happiness conversely. Although, Marillawanted to change Anne‟s impulsive into a child who hascourteous and careful nature to act in accordance with thelovely girl in her mind, but sometimes she is more likeAnne‟s nature in usual whom always give cheerfulcondition or shocking because of her mistake. Shebelieves that her lovely girl that will change by herselfover time, increasing her age and also increasing herexperience that she can, so it can make as a lesson for herfuture.Although Marilla whom plays an important roleto change Anne‟s nature, but Matthew also brings animportant role to always give positive motivation orfomentation to change Anne‟s nature. In this respect,Marilla and Matthew have job in each way by themselvesto change their little girl become a better daughter and beproud of all people around them. Because, if a child wasin under pressure by the laws and moral teachings, thechild will develop into nature of stiff or even unpleasantchild in Green Gables. But, if Marilla taught well aboutthe softness to the child, it will be made a better able tobalance in herself in the community when she interactwith others.Matthew attention is seen as, a shy man, whomis usually afraid to talk with a girl, choose the courage togive the best explanation for Anne, to agree withMarilla‟s suggestion to apologize to Mrs. Lynde forhaving shouted out loud and inappropriate behavior onher face immediately. Matthew did not want his favoritegirl, constantly received the punishment from Marilla. With the statement below, proving that Matthew is veryfond of Anne from the beginning that he met. So, healways acted as someone who can spoil Anne with hisown way that is not too excessive, as well as to meet thedemand Marilla to give harsh education on Anne."Well now, of course I do. It's terriblelonesome downstairs without you. Justgo and smooth things over-- that's a goodgirl." (Montgomery, 1980:64)

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESMatthew was always present at the right timelike, if Anne has a problem with others, he tries to amuseher sadness, and he always be a friend who is ready tolisten in every story that Anne wanted to tell him aboutall her experiences in all day. Even when, Anne toldabout her feeling in her lesson, especially geometrilesson, Matthew always gives a positive motivation forAnne to make his lovely child never say die in her lesson.Because, Matthew feel in bones that his lovely child issmart girl and he always convinces Anne that she wascapable to confront any lesson even though it looksdifficult.I guess you're all right at anything. Mr.Phillips told me last week in Blair's storeat Carmody that you was the smartestscholar in school and was making rapidprogress.( Montgomery, 1980:118)With a little positive praise, Matthew felt that hewas not too spoiled his Anne, but made her is morethoughtful in responding her problem and do not despairwhen faced something difficult as she got any chance. Inaddition to providing positive motivation for his child, but actually Matthew just only tries to tell evidently thatAnne was a bright child in f<strong>ini</strong>shing all lesson well. So,Matthew is only necessary to provide the best words forAnne that Anne could be better than before.3.2.4 Interaction With Others CharactersHumans are social beings, who can not livealone without some help from others. In social life, nobody people does not need other people in their life.Whether, it's their life as an aristocrat or a person whodoes not have anything. Human was created by God tohelp and complement each other. Like, a director requiresan employee of middle-class family, a foreman ofconstruction laborers require further can give them a job,or a chef needs vegetables and fishes traders to buy allthe ingredients to make various dishes, etc. Thus, it appears that establishment of anindividual relationship with one other individual, thenecessity of interaction which is a reciprocal relationshipthat caused the reaction of other individuals. it means, that there is interdependence between human beings toone another, it is also seen in the novel "Anne of greengables", in the main character named Anne Shirley, whoplays an orphan, need someone who really want to admitit, and entrusting to live in a family who cared for her.“....Nobody ever did want me. I mighthave known it was all too beautiful to last.I might have known nobody really didwant me....” (Montgomery, 1980:26)In the above quotation proved about, act of anorphan expressing when she expects to have completefamily in their mind. Actually, the early success ofchild‟s interaction came from a small environment thatshe encountered most often are their family members.Society will look at it, if a child is not able to show goodbehavior in their family, how the child can do that infront of people. But for orphans, like Anne Shirley hasbeen left by her parents since she was four months old, still can not understand how to behave, so many errorsthat appear when someone saw it. In fact, children likethese who need someone to care for and educate.Although, Anne never got the truth of love, shetries to uncompla<strong>ini</strong>ng. She always tried to look around itwith her positive mind, without mean mischief with allaround her. She did her job that should not endure alonewell in this world. Although, she is more like to amuseherself with all the positive things that are nearby. Butthat's what makes Matthew to be attracted to strangechild or freakish child for the first time that he saw in thestation with the clothes that she worn out of it. Like achild, she tells all her heart with words that can makeMatthew follow in the Anne‟s small world. But this freckled witch was very different, and although he found it rather difficultfor his slower intelligence to keep up withher brisk mental processes he thought thathe "kind of liked her chatter." So he saidas shyly as usual:"Oh, you can talk as much as you like. Idon't mind." (Montgomery, 1980:19)The above quote proved that there is a mutualdependence on both. Matthew, someone who is quiet andtoo shy to reveal the contents of his heart, while Anne, alittle girl with her lively in her mind that can amuse anold man, Matthew. With the word "match" used by Anne, she felt that she gets her soulmate because Matthew isone person who enjoys all her thinking about herimagination. During this time, the people around herthought that she was a little girl who is too much to talk, even one of the orphan‟s foundation, named Mrs.Spencer wants to tie her tongue and hanged it out, if shecan do it. In addition, every person who listen Anne‟stalking assumed that no child should have the ability tospeak for too much, even when she has just an orphanthat she should always to obey with what the adults saidwithout argued one bit. That's why, no wonder if Matthew likes Anneand he expects her to stay at Green Gables. However, when Matthew was expressed his op<strong>ini</strong>on to MarillaCurtbert, Marilla immediately denied the presence ofAnne because she really did not want a little girl in herhome, but even if she wants a girl in her house, she doesnot expect Anne to be her little girl. The affection whichis occurred by Matthew, was surprising Marilla in once.Because Marilla never saw his brother was too devotedhis affection towards the little girl. During this, Marillaknew that Matthew just wanted to devote his entire lifefor his farming and plantation which is inherited by hisparents. Hence, he never got to know a girl fromanywhere.21

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLES"I should say not. What good would shebe to us?""We might be some good to her," saidMatthew suddenly and unexpectedly.”(Montgomery, 1980:30)Marilla felt there's nothing special, so heallowed Matthew to have the intention of caring forAnne. Because, Marilla only needs what she wants ratherthan something that has not been know certainly. Doubtlythat Anne could turn into her lovely child, making himeven harder on her establishment. However, Matthew‟sdesire actually has been seen by Marilla‟s eyes, that hewanted to take care of Anne. The purpose of the "useful"indicates that Anne just requires a Curtbert family to takeher care and confess it in the Curtbert family. But, oneday Curtbert family to be proud of her all properties byher owned and would never have said unrepentant fromthe Curtbert family that had been mainta<strong>ini</strong>ng her.Two brothers Curtbert has each its own way ofexpressing all their affection towards their little girl,Anne Shirley. Matthew is quiet and shy, trying to spoilher and give lots of motivation and encouragement toalways be the best in outside. Meanwhile, Marilla had asense of affection are more used to educate and teachmoral value for her that it will be formed her to be aspecial girl one day, behind the nature of severity.Although, it seems so difficult but Marilla never say dieto form her little girl whom can be respected by thosearounds her."Will you ever have any sense, Anne?"groaned Marilla. (Montgomery, 1980:189)Actually, the hard hearted and seemed that shereally do not care in every Anne‟s attitude, Marilla hidesher excessive love towards Anne. Each Anne‟scarelessness and imagination that could harm it, itsmaking Marilla felt that a great stab and its very painful ifthere is a bad thing toward Anne. However, rather than alively little girl, who can make those around her facedwith a scary and embarrassing situation, from a little girl,Anne. Not only Matthew or Marilla who feel thesingularity are as well as a comforting thing, when Annehas been in a situation that makes her very miserable. Asher carelessness that Anne did when Mr. and Mrs. Barrycame in Marilla‟s house. Marilla and Anne made a cakefor their guest, but the results of failure totally.Accidentally, Anne made a cake with the mixture ofanodyne oil that is placed by Marilla in a bottle labeledthe best vanilla. This incident made Anne felt the greatshame because good wishes for Mrs. Allan also failed."My dear little girl, you musn't cry likethis," she said,... or"Yes, I know, dear. And I assure you Iappreciate your kindness andthoughtfulness just as much as if it hadturned out all right. (Montgomery,1980:148)Mrs. Allan's kindness shown in a touch andwords made Anne feel calmer than before. Anne hadnever felt the touch of affection before, making her feellucky that she had known about Mrs. Allan. Speech andtouch which is given by Mrs. Allan made Anne hope thatshe could have such kindness owned by Mrs. Allan. Inaddition, she hopes that she could become the wife of apastor, because a priest was never objected to what wasseen on her body, especially her hair. Anne was notappropriate when we become a m<strong>ini</strong>ster or a pastor'swife, we still keep to pay attention for some mattersrelating to the worldly.”.....I hope I shall be a little like Mrs.Allan when I grow up....” (Montgomery,1980:176)However, from all the kindness that is known byAnne, Anne was also learned that Mrs. Allan's childhoodis also not as good as she was growing up. Mrs. Allansaid that she also experienced a childhood that wasalways in trouble, and has a naughty nature. This, makesAnne amused because she feels has a chance to become abetter person as shown by Mrs. Allan to her. Mrs. Allanis someone who is coveted by Anne as adults becausethey have the softness in her heart, so that makes peoplecomfortable around her closer. However, this is different with Anne‟sadmiration that is shown in Miss Muriel Stacy. MissMuriel Stacy is a teacher who replaced to Mr. Philips inAvonlea‟s school that is a new thing happened inAvonlea. Because, during this Avonlea never took awoman to become teachers and teach for this school.Initially, Anne wanted her to be someone who has theextraordinary kindness and full of tenderness, but Annealso admire the new teacher because of physicalconditions at teacher can make Anne love her quickly.“....But I think it must be splendid and Ibelieve I shall find that Miss Stacy is akindred spirit." (Montgomery, 1980:158)Previously, Anne only heard stories about theirnew teachers from her friends who visited in the Anne‟shouse, especially Diana who every day tells her aboutwhat happened in school. The moments, Anne felt thatshe would fit each other like, when she met Matthew infirst time. When she saw Miss Stacy in first time, Annefelt admiration in front of her eyes. She immediatelyloved Miss Stacy as Miss Stacy because of the fem<strong>ini</strong>nein Miss Stacy personality that has been seen by Anne‟seyes surely she also has a melodious voice. Moreover, she's really calls Anne‟s name with spelling that isdesired by Anne. With the physical condition with sofascinating, no wonder if Anne also wanted her to be aslike Miss Stacy, whom a beautiful but she had chosen theprofession as a teacher and devoted herself in remoteareas.

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESI would call it a worthy purpose to wantto be a teacher like Miss Stacy, wouldn'tyou, Marilla? I think it's a very nobleprofession." (Montgomery, 1980:201-202)When Anne decided to take exams at theacademy Queen, she was already determined to become ateacher. At that moment, Anne starts to focus herattention to full with what to be her purpose in life.Except she wants to be liked Miss Stacy, she also hopesthat being a teacher is the same ideals of honor as a wifeof a pastor. This shows that Anne is not too far from hermother profession before she was married. Because,Anne‟s mother was a teacher in Boling Broke high schoolbefore. However, to reach her goal become a reality isnot easy in life. Because, Anne has the same competitorin her school, named Gilbert Blythe. Since the incidentconducted by Gilbert Blythe towards Anne, to makeAnne be shameful in front of her other friends, Anne feltthat she had an enemy that will not be forgiven by her.Although, Gilbert has repeatedly apologized to Anne butno one his apologized that has been received by Annebecause of her hurt is bigger than Gilbert‟s apologized.Because of it, Anne always felt that Gilbert is herheaviest rival at the academy queen. To reach her goals,Anne will not budge on the Gilbert and if she lost in onesubject, Anne will feel humiliated and ridiculed for thesecond time after the incident. Therefore, Anne alwaysstruggled to get the best results. Besides trying to provein Gilbert, that he could be stronger from it, he alsowanted to make people who already take care of herproud of who has he accomplished. Because, one thingthat we can be happy if we loved person that we loved.3.3 The Effects on Anne’s ExtraversionIn each development, human has many chancesto choose what the method they use to face their problem. When they chose to develop their personality, they mustknow what the effects in their front. Sometimes, theychose their personality in wrong side because they havemany purposes to make their environment made anattention for them fully. Or, they chose to use theirchance to develop in right way, because they realized thatthe chance in their life are not coming twice so they mustuse the chance carefully in right way.3.3.1 Anne’s BehaviorLiving in the midst of society, sometimes it doeslook difficult or even easy to live it. Initially, it alldepends on ourselves to get a certain attitude in all thethings that are in front of us whether it is bad or good forus. And, one of the factors that affect it actually comesfrom our attitude towards society. Because of ourbehavior, the society can judge whether we are a goodpersonor not. Although society op<strong>ini</strong>on is not alwaystrue, but they are watching us, watching our movements, and judge us from a distance. However, it must start froma smaller environment, the family because the family cancontrol and give protection to us, and provide educationabout the moral that we need to live in a society. This situation can not be felt by Anne Shirley, who lives in a family that she did not know who they areand far away from its original place. When all therelatives are not to be found anymore, then people whocan help us only the environment around us. When Annecame first the place, that is not a few people whodenounced her because of her attitude has been showedby herself that does not deserve to be shown like a littlegirl. Lots of carelessness, recklessness and the mistakesshe did to be able to follow the rules in the area.Ever since I came to Green Gables I'vebeen making mistakes, and each mistakehas helped to cure me of some greatshortcoming. The affair of the amethystbrooch cured me of meddling with thingsthat didn't belong to me. The HauntedWood mistake cured me of letting myimagination run away with me. Thel<strong>ini</strong>ment cake mistake cured me ofcarelessness in cooking. Dyeing my haircured me of vanity. I never think aboutmy hair and nose now--at least, veryseldom. And today's mistake is going tocure me of being too romantic. I havecome to the conclusion that it is no usetrying to be romantic in Avonlea.(Montgomery, 1980:189:5)From the quotation above, Anne felt that everyerror and carelessness that she did, provide her ownlessons from her mistakes in her life so she can be betterto appreciate and take care of something in front of her. Some events above are just some of her mistakes andcarelessness of the people nearby. Like, amethyst broochincident was not entirely Anne‟s fault, however, Marillamistrust towards new people who will live in her house.Because, Marilla‟s brooch was found in tuck of Marillascarves after going to the church. The moment just aboutMarilla is not mistrust fully because a child who has ahigh imagination will quickly forget the surroundingswhen she's already having fun. In fact, when she wastempted to see the pin, she will forget that Anne shouldnot go into another room and enter without permission tosee the beauty brooch on her mind. Although, Marillafinally knew that Anne did not take her brooch, Anne hasunderstood that she should not play with stuff that wasnot hers. Moreover, he stayed at home with people whohad cared for her, moreover the family were not herfamily that made her to be more careful even though shewas tempted with it.With a high imagination, Anne also sometimestoo let her mind drift into the space that is not real world,23

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESlike a shadow of forest that was named with the title,"Haunted Forest". Here, Anne imagines that there issomeone who always followed her and tried to catch herfrom the behind when it passed in the night. She alsoimagine there is listened the voice of a girl who alwayscalled out to her that made her has to obey the word ofthe girl. With all the things that haunt her, making herwas no longer to enjoy the beauty of Green Gables, butinstead makes her afraid of something that is uncertain. With all her fears, Anne also take a lesson that she shouldnot allow herself to dissolve in a wild imagination anddeveloping the wrong direction. After she realized that her imagination was toowild, she tries not to use her imagination too wildbecause it only made her uncomfortable in the place thatshe liked. However, the incidence of "haunted forest" didnot make Anne lose her another imagination, theimagination that lead to a faux pas. Anne has lots ofcarelessness that she did, as like, forget to include thewheat flour in her cake as basic material, which makesthe cake was a total failure, forgot to close the puddingsauce, to make a dead mouse in it. However, Anne didnot immediately throw it away, to make a sauce thatMarilla will be presenting for her special guest. However, Anne‟s carelessness made this timethat makes her ashamed of that special someone whothinks Mrs. Allan, the wife of a pastor. At that time, shewas doing her best for maximum results, but instead shemade a mistake has included anodyne oil into cake batter. The incident which makes Anne be shameful, making apromise for herself to careless anymore while cooking orrather eliminate her imagination for a while when shewas cooking. In addition to these events, only events thatalmost took her live that makes Anne determined to makeher think logically. In addition, she nearly lost her life, she also has abandoned her self-esteem because thatsaved her that she was a hostile, named Gilbert Blythe.Actually, all the faux pas are made by Annebecause she prefers the shadows of imagination that shethought more beautiful and more romantic than doingthings to match what was written in cookbooks. By Anne, romance is about a part of imagination that can make usimagine a beautiful thing without us to force it, althoughin real life something which is very unusual. Therefore, with events that have been created from Anne‟s romanticthoughts, making her did not want to dissolve in aromance that is not real anymore. In fact, any intention tolose Anne‟s romantic nature to obey Marilla‟s words thatlogical thinking is more important and not endanger suchevents that made the club a story by Anne ie, "virginlily".However, not everyone in the green gables agreewith Anne‟s decision that she should eliminate all herromantic nature. As like, Matthew did not want if Anne‟sromantic nature disappear entirely, but he wants topreserve the nature of Anne‟s romantic within certainlimits. Because, if Anne eliminates the overall nature ofit, Matthew would not look Anne by herself when he metin first time, which can be fun from every romancearound her that she raises. Matthew is a man who alwaysmotivates Anne to strive to be the best, so it makes Anneto try hard to be a proud of by the people around her, especially her new family, who had been caring for andletting her feel more compassion."Marilla, isn't it nice to think thattomorrow is a new day with no mistakesin it yet?....""But have you ever noticed oneencouraging thing about me, Marilla? Inever make the same mistake twice."(Montgomery, 1980:149)In each incident, Anne do not always realize thatshe's always going to make mistakes that could worryabout the people around her because, Anne has aprinciple that she would not repeat the mistake the secondtime. Although the intentions are doubted by Marilla, who saw Anne did not make the same mistake but shewill make another mistake, make Anne always triesincreasingly that past mistakes is a lesson she took toequip its future tread of the longer demanding herresoluteness to choose life her like what she wanted tolive in Green Gables. After the events that endanger her owned, shedid prove that Anne could be more calmly and try to doeverything well on Marilla‟s command. Anne felt that theprevious incident had made her to stop making mistakesand carelessness that complicate the people around her. Moreover, the cherished desire is greater than simplyrecognizing, making her starts to choose how to behavelike a respectable lady without prejudice to the romantic,as desired by Matthew, who she considered was her soulmate.I'm glad you've got back, I must say. It'sbeen fearful lonesome here without you,and I never put in four longer days."(Montgomery, 1980:197)Proving the above claimed that the existence ofAnne began to be felt by Marilla, that the longer felt thatthe existence of Anne start meaningful side. Marilla nolonger wish to spend the time without Anne‟s presence inher side. Marilla is getting used to the Anne‟s impulsivenature to show her affection, makes her feel comforted inher old days, that she did not know how long she couldsee Anne in her side. With, the attitudes are shown byMarilla and Matthew is so in love with her, it makesAnne feel more loved them and would never be able toleave them than the luxury that she felt when visiting inMrs. Josephine‟s house, Diana‟s aunt.“….and I feel that it marks an epoch inmy life. But the best of it all was thecoming home." (Montgomery,1980:197:2)The above quote proves that Anne loved her new familyand her place in green gables. Though, she can get lots of

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESluxury who likes her but from the statement above provedthat Anne is a little girl as an orphan never looked like agreedy girl to get more wealth for someone. She felt thatshe was happy because she has two people who alwayskeep and love her very much with all their understandingand patience for all Anne‟s attitude. More than that, Anneknew that she got two persons who always wait for herwhen she went along in another place with love. Exceptit, Marilla and Matthew know that Anne has becometheirs fully, who always stands beside them to be theirlittle girl like the first time they saw four years ago.3.3.2 Acceptance Anne’s Existence"It's not the first time I've been glad,"retorted Marilla. "You do like to rubthings in, Matthew Cuthbert."Miss Barry, who was sitting behindthem, leaned forward and poked Marillain the back with her parasol."Aren't you proud of that Anne-girl? Iam," she said. (Montgomery, 1980:238)The quotation above, proved that Anne‟ssurroundings realized that they have special girl in theirfront especially Marilla Curtbert. When Marilla saidabout her proud into her little girl is not in first time,Marilla realized that Anne is a gift from God for her andMatthew. Marilla thought that Anne will change herfamily becomes more colorful with Anne‟s imaginationand her impulsive for somebody else. But, because ofMarilla has a sense of logically woman, she never toldwhat her feeling about Anne in first time. Above all, theyknew that Anne Shirley, their little girl had successfulwith all her achievement, the winner of AveryScholarship in Academic Queen."Just mind you that-- rather than adozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn'ta boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? It was a girl--my girl--my girlthat I'm proud of."( Montgomery,1980:241)But, it‟s different with Matthew‟s thinking aboutAnne. When Anne has stayed in first time in GreenGables, Matthew still one person who gives his heart forAnne and believed that his little girl will be brightest girlwith all her kindness. Though, lots of mistake that Anne‟sdid, Matthew believed that his little girl still needs time toknow or make a progress with her new surroundings.Actually, before Anne made all her achievement, she wasfamous with her bright in her words when she talkedabout her imagination. Not only Anne‟s surroundings inAvonlea knew it, but a doctor from Spencervale realizedthat he knows about how special she is when she talkedabout what the steps to lose the cough from Minnie May.He sent a message for Marilla that she must let her littlegirl to stay in outside as long as she wants, but still inmonitoring with all her attitude and her relationshipsaround her. Like in this quotation from Miss Barry:Anne has as many shades as a rainbowand every shade is the prettiest while itlasts. I don't know that she is as amusingas she was when she was a child, but shemakes me love her and I like people whomake me love them.( Montgomery,1980:235)In first sight, Anne viewed as a little girl has norespectable girl with all she did. But, when Anne tried tosay her apologize with her words deeply, Miss Barry, thewoman with sharp mouth gave her love to Anne Shirleyeasily. She just know that Anne is more honest girl thatshe knew than the other girls who makes her make up likea woman. But, she thought that Anne Shirley is so naturalwith all her uniqueness. That‟s why, all people around herwill be loved her easily.CONCLUSIONIn the novel titled Anne of Green Gables, LucyMaud Montgomery wanted to show Anne‟s Extraversionas an orphan child. Anne‟s type personality as an orphanwho never get a real affection from another personbefore, tries to survive with all her imagination. At thistime, Lucy Maud Montgomery shows about Anne‟seffort to alive defensively.Anne as an orphan always wants she got a realfamily to give her needs as like other children andconfess from her surroundings. Up to now, she alwaystries to become strong with her mind in lots of place thatshe would be placed by her. When she was a child, shenever think about what she wants in this world becauseshe just thinks how she lives with all situation in front ofher. As like, took orders from a person who give her alivefor a moment, Mrs. Thomas, in her house until she waseight years old. And, she move on Mrs. Hammond‟shouse until she was ten years old. Anne helped Mrs.Thomas and Mrs. Hammond to keep her house and herchildren. However, Anne‟s live changed when she mether new family in Green Gables, Curtbert family.Initially, there has misunderstanding between Curtbertfamily and Mrs. Spencer who helped these family to getorphan boy for them. But, Mrs. Spencer sent orphan girlfor them. So, Curtbert family decided to keep Anne intheir house finally with their rules that she must beobeyed. Actually, as an orphan she never know aboutwhat the best for her, what kind of nature that must usewhen she interacts with a society around her. So, lots ofcarelessness, recklessness, and mistakes that she did withpeople who met with her.Because of Anne‟s nature, the society inAvonlea hope the changes from Anne‟s nature as anorphan. So that‟s why, Marilla as a foster parents for25

ANNE’S EXTRAVERSION AND ITS MAJOR CAUSES IN LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY’S ANNE OF GREEN GABLESAnne, gave all rules about moral value, religious, orproper attitude in Anne‟s mind. Though, it‟s so difficultto change Anne‟s nature like other children, but Marillanever gave up with the situation, because she know thatAnne has good inner that is never found from otherchildren and she will become different as long as she canlearn from her mistakes. All experiences that she got from her society inGreen Gables, formsed her personality to be mature andwise to determine her decision in her future life.Furthermore, with all her mistakes, she thought that shenever does her mistake twice. Beside that, she has herimagination in her mind to solve her problem easily. Bythe time, from Anne‟s changes to interact with the societyaround her, made her society realized about nobodyorphan who never changed be better person if they got achance to get it from their environment who alwayssupport them. So, it would be made their surroundings beproud of them because of their ability to get a chance be abetter person in around them, like Anne Shirley did.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThanks to Allah SWT, because of love, help, and blessing that given during the process of f<strong>ini</strong>shingthis thesis.
