Born in County Durham in 1938, Trowell studied at the SunderlandCollege of Art and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools where he receivedthe Landseer Silver Medal for painting and the Bronze Medal for Drawing, as well as theSir James Knott travelling scholarship. The appeal of his landscapes lies in their spiritand vitality, and in the way they recreate the atmosphere, colour and light.
