RemembrancesBro. Norbert Lengerich, C.S.C., was a most effective pastoral minister with aremarkable ability to connect with people, especially with the poor and those in ruralareas. Bro. Norbert was born in 1928 in Decatur, IN and grew up on the family farm,doing chores and fixing farm implements in the machine shop. After working as atelephone lineman, he saw active service in the Korean War, operating heavy equipmentfor the Army Corps <strong>of</strong> Engineers.Bro. Norbert made perpetual pr<strong>of</strong>ession in 1958 and was soon sent to Santarém,Brazil, where his previous experience made him a natural in the areas <strong>of</strong> maintenanceand grounds work. He cleared the jungle on the community’s property outside <strong>of</strong> town,where the District now grows trees for lumber.Eventually, Bro. Norbert moved from farming to social and pastoral work. He woulddrive through the countryside in northeast Brazil connecting with chapel communities and was <strong>of</strong>ten the only minister<strong>of</strong> the church the rural people would see for months at a time.In the past several years, Bro. Norbert had developed heart trouble. He died <strong>of</strong> heart failure on December 1, 2012,at St. David’s Rehabilitation in Austin, TX. Bro. Norbert continued to make rosaries — he was buried with the last onehe made.Bro. Robert Emmet Gilroy, C.S.C., was known as a teacher who made Latin comealive for his students. Born in 1936 in North Attleborough, MA, he entered <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>as a candidate in 1953 and made his final pr<strong>of</strong>ession in 1957. From there, Bro. Robert’scareer as a teacher, principal and administrator took him from New England and theNortheast U.S. to Rome, Italy. In 2000, he moved to St. Joseph Center in Valatie,NY, where he served as Province Archivist and also returned to teaching Latin to a fewstudents until 2012.Bro. Robert will be remembered for his enthusiasm for all things Roman, all thingsBritish and all things Republican. He was blessed with a wonderful singing voice andshared his talent with choirs including the Cathedral <strong>of</strong> the Immaculate Conception inAlbany, NY.Bro. Robert was with community members when he collapsed suddenly at St. Joseph Center in Valatie, NY. Hepassed away on January 19, 2013.Bro. Joseph Edward Umile, C.S.C., was born in 1948 in New Haven, CT. Afterteaching at his alma mater, Notre Dame High School in West Haven, CT, he entered<strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>. His ministry in education as both teacher and administrator took him tomany far flung locations, including Flushing, NY, Rome, Italy and Indianapolis, IN.After moving to the <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> Community Residence in Cocoa Beach, FL to carefor his mother, he served as the Director <strong>of</strong> Advancement at Melbourne Central HighSchool in Melbourne, FL. In 2011, Bro. Joseph became Director <strong>of</strong> Development andthen Project Assistant to the President at <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> College in South Bend, IN.He was admitted to the hospital in South Bend due to respiratory problems andpassed away on January 13, 2013.Those who lived and worked with Bro. Joseph appreciated his caring, generosity anddedication to religious life. He shared his many gifts and talents wherever he ministered.He will be remembered as a loving community builder, evidenced by his willingness to use his excellent cooking skills forthe benefit <strong>of</strong> all.Our commitment is an invitation for our fellowChristians to fulfill their vocation.– Constitutions <strong>of</strong> the Congregation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Cross</strong><strong>Moreau</strong> News 7
