greetings,
In this issue of the newsletter you will read about many important contributions
to the continued success of the Denver Health Foundation. At our recent Annual
Meeting a number of awards were presented to individuals and organizations
who have stepped forward to join us in our efforts. theirs are significant
accomplishments because the work of the Foundation relies on partnerships in the
community to achieve the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves.
We thank the following awardees for making a tremendous impact on our ability to
support Denver Health in its mission:

patients who, in many cases, have no other resources.
I also want to thank members of our Board of Directors who have provided
extraordinary leadership in every aspect of our work. We also want to acknowledge
out-going Board Member, Jerry Cowan, for his six years of service on the Board, for
his financial support, emotional involvement, and intellectual engagement in all that
we do. He will be missed.

Riverfront Park Fashion
on August 13th Denver’s most elegant and fashion forward came
together for a spectacular evening to raise funds for Denver
Health Foundation. guests were wowed by the Fall collections of
designers William rast and ever, hosted by BlUsH, and Chris Benz,
hosted by lawrence Covell.
set in a stunning location at the base of the Millennium Bridge,
guests of riverfront Park Fashion enjoyed the beautiful weather
while being the first to see the latest collections from national
and international designers. over 1,200 of Denver’s socialites,
philanthropists and community leaders came out in support of
women’s health programs at Denver Health.
Delicious bites provided by Zengo, Fogo de Chão, table 6, and Happy
Cakes kept the crowd energetic and engaged. thank you to east West
Partners, Wells Fargo, Born to Build Foundation and many, many
others for your support of riverfront Park Fashion and for making a
difference in the lives of Denver’s citizens.

Greg Bogdan, PhD, is currently the Administrative Director for rocky Mountain Poison & Drug
Center (rMPDC), which also includes the nurseline, Appointment Center, spanish line,
research & Consulting, and all various support departments. greg started with rMPDC in March
1995 and has enjoyed his long career at Denver Health. since 2009, greg has been a very
active member of the level one society of the Denver Health Foundation and currently serves as
the Vice Chair of its Board of Directors. He is instrumental in encouraging and providing many
volunteers for most of the Denver Health Foundation and level one society events. We couldn’t
do it without his support. Many thanks to greg for all that he does to go above and beyond!
PHYsiciaN oF tHe Year
Philip Mehler, MD, is the Chief Medical officer of Denver Health. As a recognized national and
international expert in the medical complications of anorexia and bulimia, Dr. Mehler is the
founder and director of the ACUte Center for eating Disorders at Denver Health. Dr. Mehler
is also a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado school of Medicine. some years
ago, Phil was the physician to Mr. Bud glassman. over time, Phil cultivated Mr. glassman
resulting in a major gift and the establishment of the shana glassman Memorial endowed Chair
in general Internal Medicine in which Dr. Mehler is the current Chair holder. Most recently,
Phil was instrumental in securing another endowment – the Kevin and elaine Kauffman
Distinguished Chair in Cardiology. For his superb fundraising ability and for many talents and
gifts to Denver Health and the Denver Health Foundation, we give many thanks
and congratulations to Dr. Phil Mehler.
dePartMeNt oF tHe Year
Behavioral Health Services (BHS) assesses, evaluates and treats patients with psychiatric and substance abuse disorders
and consists of the adult, child, and adolescent hospital-based inpatient services, community detoxification, outpatient
programs, psychiatric emergency services, and mobile crisis services. BHs includes a six-bed psychiatric emergency
service, a 12-bed adolescent inpatient, and a 44-bed adult inpatient service. opening in the fall of 2011, Pavilion M will
be the new home of BHs’ inpatient and outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. We recognize and congratulate the
high level of involvement of many dedicated staff members working for the future of behavioral health research. Dr. robert
House, Director of BHs, accepted the award on behalf of the Department.

Bruce Alexander, Vectra Bank President is a fifth generation Colorado banker and former
executive Director of Denver Urban renewal Authority. Bruce has been recognized by numerous
organizations as a strong community-minded and community-focused leader. He has a
reputation for being a “level-headed quiet leader” who can bring disparate parties together
for savvy negotiations resulting in “win-win” deals. He has had a significant impact on the
development of the Denver business landscape and economy. He has been a very generous and
involved supporter of the Foundation for over 10 years. He served as former Chair of the Denver
Health and Hospitals Authority Board, and he and his wife, lisa, were Chairs of the 2010
nightshine gala. A huge thank you and congratulations go to Bruce for his many contributions
to Denver Health and the Foundation.

FouNdatioN oF tHe Year
The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides funding to nonprofit
organizations with a focus on creating a seamless system of care for medically underserved
women and men in the Affiliate’s 19-county service area. since 2003, the Komen Denver
Metropolitan Affiliate has awarded over $2.5 million to the Denver Health Foundation to support
such programs as the treatment Assistance Program for Breast Cancer Patients, the Clinical trials
enrollment Program, and improved access to screening for the underserved and for people with
disabilities. Michele ostrander, executive Director; Joanne Vermeulen, Director of grants and
Public Policy; and rhianon schuman, Mission Coordinator accepted the award on behalf of the
Komen Denver Metropolitan Affiliate. We are grateful for their continuing support of this most
needed work.
leGacY award
Sharon Langendoerfer, MD, Denver Health Pediatrician and Neonatologist has practiced in the
Department of Pediatrics for the past 36 years, caring for some of the hospitals tiniest and most
fragile patients. since its inception in 2003, open Your Hearts to newborns in need has had
many champions. this program provides necessities for thousands of low-income babies each
year and it has touched many thousands of donors and volunteers. none have been as committed
and loyal as Dr. sharon langendoerfer. Her intimate experiences with newborns and their families
make her a compelling spokesperson for the struggles many of them face at the time of the birth
of a new baby. the Foundation has called upon her often to speak at charity baby showers that
take place around the city and she has brought many a gathering to tears when she recounts the
stories of her patients. We thank her for her unwavering care of Denver Health’s babies and for her
faithful support of the Denver Health Foundation’s newborns in need program.

as a former radiation therapy technologist and wife and
mother of physicians, it made perfect sense to Patricia
gilman to dedicate her volunteer time to a hospital. With
that in mind, she joined Denver Health’s volunteer corps in
2007.
since then, she has loyally dedicated four hours every
thursday to the Admit/Discharge Unit.
When asked to describe her experiences she said, “I love
working with the dedicated staff in the ADU and enjoy the
variety of challenges we have each day. I am constantly
amazed and humbled by the difficulties so many of our
patients face in their daily lives and appreciate the good
fortune with which I have been blessed.”
After attending our annual recognition luncheon in 2010,
Patricia decided that she wanted to make a greater impact
in the lives of our patients. she took on yet another role
and became a reach out and read volunteer at the lowry
Clinic. “I’m a lifelong avid reader and as a former teacher
know how critical reading is to success in life.”

Before joining us in 2007, Patricia had already dedicated
her life to helping and educating others, beginning with her
childhood in england and continuing with her work at Yale
Medical Center in Connecticut. While at Yale, she helped
develop one of the first training programs for radiation
therapy technologists in the country. once she and her
husband settled in Denver, Patricia decided to pursue a
second degree in history. she then taught for eight years in
the public school system.
Patricia’s dedication, positive attitude and impact are
immeasurable. We are so honored that she has chosen to
volunteer at Denver Health.

“I have been suffering with this terrible anorexia as far back as I can remember. At least 40 years. I have been
to rehabilitation centers twice before Denver Health Center. I am now 54 years old. Without reservations, Denver
Health has been the most successful program I have been through. The staff of nurses’ aides, RNs, therapy, and
nutritional do an absolutely amazing job. I wish I could name all of them, but I hope they all know who they are.
I truly wish to thank Dr. Mehler, Dr. Gaudiani, and Dr. Mascolo for their team support in bringing me back from
an illness that has put such a hold on me. Without their efforts and support of all staff members, I am afraid
I wouldn’t come this far in recovery as I have. For the first time in many years, I feel clearer about what this
terrible disease has done to me. I also feel much more physically healthy in body than I have for a long time.
I realize this is truly a lifetime struggle, but with the tools and knowledge Denver Health has given me, I will
have a much longer and healthier life now.

Level one Society’s Toast! to Denver’s Health:
an evening to in“SPiRe” Unveils new Fundraising Campaign
Toast! to Denver’s Health, co-chaired by Mike Ferrufino,
a Kasia Iwaniczko Macleod, and Kathleen McCall-thompson
brought 250 guests together on september 21st at the
downtown spire to support youth struggling with mental illness.
the level one society of the Denver Health Foundation also
unveiled a new $1.5 million campaign called, “Beyond the
stigma.” this campaign aims to fund the endowed Fund in
Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, directed specifically
towards children and adolescents to support cutting-edge
research at Denver Health and raise awareness of behavioral
health issues.
earlier this year the level one society Board agreed to embark
on the “Beyond the stigma” campaign after successfully
completing a $371,000 fundraising goal to help support
mental health programs at Pavilion M, the new Child and
Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at Denver Health (see story on
opposite page).

Happy Birthday to Teammates for Kids’
Child Life Zone!
In celebration of the one-year anniversary of the Teammates for Kids Child Life Zone, the volunteer services
department hosted a birthday party. Present and former pediatric patients were invited to the event held on
Saturday, August 20th . Activities included helmet safety demonstrations, ambulance tours, visits with pet therapy
animals, arts and crafts, face painting, an appearance from Sponge Bob Square Pants, live music by Swingset Jazz,
birthday cake, fun giveaways and much more.
The Child Life Zone was donated to Denver Health by the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation in partnership
with the Troy Aikman Foundation. It is a 3,300 square-foot state-of-the-art therapeutic and educational sanctuary for
pediatric patients and their families.

endowed Fund in Child & adolescent Behavioral Health
the Behavioral Health Department at Denver Health has
a well-earned reputation for excellence, particularly in
the area of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. It provides a
wide continuum of services to troubled children and teens.
treatment takes place at Denver Health campus, on both
an inpatient and outpatient basis, and at school-based
clinics. these young patients are treated for a variety of
problems ranging from abuse at home to drug addition on
the streets to bi-polar, depression, and suicidal disorders.
With the closure of all other in-patient psychiatric beds
in Denver over the past several years, only Denver Health
provides care and management for the inpatient mental
health needs of Denver’s youth.

facility, located in what is known as Pavilion “M”,

Denver Health hosted the grand opening of Pavilion M on october 31 st
will deliver the most effective and advanced therapeutic
programs available by incorporating art, music, outdoor
recreation, and a 21 st century learning classroom.
now that Denver Health has built the right place for
Denver kids to heal, a $1.5 million endowment campaign
has been undertaken. When completed, it will provide
the Department with an income stream dedicated solely
to the purpose of clinical research leading to better, more
effective treatments for children and adolescents
struggling to regain mental health.

over time, a favorite activity for the group has become checking out
sales, exhibits, and craft fairs to gather and exchange new ideas.
the original output of blankets has expanded to include hats, bibs,
burp cloths, booties, toys and books.
In May, members received an award at the newborns in need annual
tea at the governor’s Mansion, and were honored for their commitment,
being named “special Friends” of the program. this is further
reflected by a common feeling in the group on many levels. sewing is
a relaxing and enjoyable way for self-expression and a creative use of
spare time. It is possible to see results with every new day’s output.
As the weather gets colder, knowing that Denver Health’s newborns
will be going home with an assortment of warm handmade items, is a
wonderful way to add extra meaning to the winter season and making
of happier holidays.

after major surgery in 2007 with Dr. Fernando Kim, Denver
Health’s Chief of Urology, Denver native and long-time Boulder
resident as well as a nobel Prize winner, Dr. John Hall wanted to find
some ways to continue staying connected with Denver Health and
become a volunteer. His wife lindy, an enthusiastic quilter, began
experimenting with fleece blankets for the newborns in need program
that supplies layette items for the thousands of low-income babies
born each year at the hospital.
It seemed that each time they would fill a shopping cart at local fabric
stores, conversations would start at the cutting table or check-out lines
and soon a group of motivated and creative crafters came together to
form the serendipity sewing Circle.
Members in Boulder include: John and lindy Hall (CU professor
and retired teacher), Brenda llewellyn (professional seamstress
and designer), and Kathy deHaas (hair stylist). Judy Wilcox, a
retired educator from Jeffco school district lives in Westminster
and evergreen neighbors laura loman, Cheryl o’toole and Patti
Petit-Danhour are pooling their talents to create new designs and
quantities of unusual items. larry Morris of northglenn is a special
resource and appreciated for his donations of time and materials in
cutting and preparing items to be finished.
