Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Egon is oneof the three doctors of parapsychologyon the original Ghostbusters team.Bespectacled, awkward, and laconic,Egon is the member of the team responsiblefor the main theoretical frameworkfor their paranormal studies. Also, beingaddicted to science, he is the creator ofthe Ghostbusters’ equipment along withDr. Ray Stantz.Egon is the most serious and straightforwardmember of the team. Of his hobbies,he states that he collects “spores,molds, and fungus,” and claims that as achild, the only toy he ever had was “partof a Slinky,” but he straightened it.Egon had been haunted by the Boogiemanas a child, and was severely traumatized.This led him to paranormalresearch, where he would eventually begiven a chance to use his knowledge anddevices to gain revenge. Despite his leaningstowards science, Egon has a familyhistory of witchcraft (two ancestors, Eliand Ezekiel, were wizards), of which heis ashamed.He is also the love interest of JanineMelnitz, the Ghostbusters’ secretary.While not always a one-sided interest,Egon’s repressed behavior towards loveoften forces him to hide his feelings forher. However, whenever she goes on adate with another man, Egon shows noticeabledislike for whomever she dates(often, Janine will date another man justto push Egon).Egon once reluctantly left the team atthe request of his Uncle Cyrus, but laterreturned after his uncle saw what kindof work his nephew and his friends did.Egon continues to work on the theoreticalside of paranormal phenomenonwhen he is not teaching new recruits atGBI headquarters.Egon Spengler, Ph.
