T.P.L.0.␣/␣Multi-Purpose␣PlatesMaterials Information For Our T.P.L.O. PlatesVOI has always machined plates from solid bars of implant grade stainless steel. We havenever used a “cast”, “stamped” or injection molding methods to mass-produce our plates. Each year we purchase thousands of pounds of material in various shapes and diameters. The material is made to ASTM standards, VOI, Biomet, AESCULAP and most other manufacturerschoose to purchase this material from a select few mills based in Germany.ASTM F 138 (round shape for screws)ASTM F 139 (rectangular shape for plates)The material is “cold drawn”; this hardening process procedures greater tensile strength.Tensile strength: Measures the force required to pull something such as wire or astructural beam to the point where it breaks. Specifically, the tensile strength of a materialis the maximum amount of tensile stress that can be subjected to before failure.Strength:PSI = Pounds / square inchPSI = 0.001 KSIKSI = 6.895 megapascalPSI = 0.006895 megapascalN/mm2 = megapascalPSI = 0.006895 N/mm2KSI = 6.895 N/mm2KSI = 0.704 Kilogram/square millimeterKSI = 1000 PSI = Newton/square millimeter (n/mm2)From day one, all of our TPLO plates have been manufactured with this standard material(1,100 N/mm2).We now offer plates that are easier to contour. The material remains ASTM F 139 ImplantGrade Stainless Steel; the only variation is we requested the material not be hardened tothe same level. The plates we now refer to as being “soft” are approximately 500 N/mm2. Severalsurgeons have used them and they tell us they are similar in hardness to the Slocumplates. For identification purposes; the “soft” plates are laser-marked as so on their side; this isthe only way to identify them. They are now available at no additional cost.Feel free to e-mail specific technical questions to sales@vetimplants.com.The V.O.I.
