The Quesnel Millionaires should
start lobbying for an end to the first
period in Junior hockey if they hope
to win any hockey games this
season.
Millionaires first-period jinx continued
during the weekend as
lacklustre opening frames cost the
local club two games.
Saturday night in Dawson Creek
Millionaires were bombed 10-2 after
falhng behind 5-0 in the first period,
and Sunday in Grande Prairie
Quesnel went down 7-4 after the
North Stars had taken a 4-1 firstperiod
advantage.
"It seems we play two good
periods of hockey," said M's assistant
coach Steve Frankson. "One
period is always the one that sinks
us. And it's usually the first."
Millionaires were eventually
down 7-0 against Dawson Creek
before they could get on the board.
George Fay tallied at 7:30 of the
second period on assists from
Roland Soucie and Mike Enemark
to give Quesnel the first of its two
goals.
Gerald Gagnon brought Quesnel
a little closer when he scored at
17:15 after a pass from Todd Joyal,
but Dawson Creek added another
At Williams Lake
before the period was over and two
more in the third to put the game
away.
Quesnel had several chances get
back into the game with power play
opportunities, but the Millionaires
simply couldn't capitalize.
Millionaires did not score once in
20 power play opportunities.
Brent Weech, Ward Phillips and
Laine Jeannette led Dawson Creek
with two goals each.
M's 7 G. PRAIRIE 4.
Once again it was the first period
which killed Quesnel in Grande
Prairie.
Millionaires were down by three
after the opening frame and they
could get no closer.
They played better in the next two
periods, however, shutting out the
North Stars in the second period
and matching Grande Prairie goal
for goal in the third.
"The last two periods were the
best periods of hockey we've
played," said Frankson. "Dave
McMillan (in goal) and Jim Scott
(on defence) played very steadily.
"Again, it was the first period
which killed us."
Fay notched his second goal of
the weekend to help pace Quesnel, a
shorthanded effort on a breakaway.
Mike Enemark, who was taken to
hospital later in the game with what
was thought "to be a separated
shoulder, added another Quesnel
marker.
X-rays showed Enemark's
shoulder to be badly bruised, not
separated.
Quesnel had only thirteen players
for the Saturday contest (not counting
goaltenders) and just 14 for
Sunday's.
Not only did the club lose
Enemark for part of Sunday's
game, but Norm Vekved, the team's
rookie defenceman, is hurting with
a sore wrist.
If Millionaires lose both
Jefencemen they'll be down to just
.hree rearguards. '
The losses dropped Quesnel's
record to 1-8, worst in the six-team
Peace-Cariboo Junior Hockey
League.
Williams Lake moved ahead of
Quesnel into fifth place with a pair
of wins during the weekend.
Quesnel's next home games are
this Wednesday against Williams
Lake and next weekend against
Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie.
Quesnel Junior Secondary School
was rolling along quite nicely in a
during the weekend, until it ran into
QJS swept its first three games in
the A division to reach the final of
the event, only to be felled by the
Laketown's Scarlet Fever 3-0.
Scarlet Fever scored three times in
the first half and was able to sit on
the lead for the duration of the contest.
The loss gave Quesnel second
place in the A level of the event.
QJS started off with a 1-1 tie
against Anne Stevenson Junior
Secondary.
Judy Filbey, who finished with
four goals in the tournament, notched
the lone Quesnel goal.
The QJS juniors then went up
against a senior team from Prince
Filbey had one in that contest,
Gillian Brown another and Malou
QJS trailed 1-0 early in the game
but came back to tie it before the
Maple Drive, playing in the B
division of the tournament, lost its
final game of the event but still
came out on top to take the championship.
Raiders, made up of primarily
Grade 8's and 9's, were tied with the
Williams Lake B team going into the
final and the winner was to be decided
on a goal for-against basis.
Maple Drive had to keep its goalsagainst
below 4 against the favoured
Anne Stevenson senior squad, and it
did in taking a 3-0 loss.
"Our goalies (Christine Plamondon
and Wendy Chanin) did an
outstanding job to keep us at that
level," said Raiders coach Judy
Specht.
Maple Drive lost its first game 1-0
to Williams Lake B but bounced
back for a 2-0 victory over
LIONS
The Lions' defence played its best
game of the season against Prince
George Rams, but the club's offence
sputtered as the locals fell 20-0.
Lions picked off two Prince
one by Larry Graham and the other
by Bob Melnyk, and the team forced
Rams into kicking situations
throughout the game. But the offense
was shut down.
"I thought the defence played a
hell of a game," said Quesnel cocoach
Tim O'Doherty. "It was probably
"We just seem to be hitting a wall
If Correlieu Senior Secondary
needed a confidence booster going
into this weekend's tournament at
Prince George, it received one in
Burns Lake.
Correlieu swept . through that
school's six-team tournament this
past weekend, losing just one game
on its way to the championship.
Correlieu came out of the opening
round with a 10-1 record and went
on to sweep its semi-final and final
matches for the win.
"It builds confidence," said Correlieu
Glen Richards may have been
disappointed when his team lost in
the semi-finals of the recent UBC
junior boys high school volleyball
tournament, but he couldn't help
but be pleased with the outcome of
his own tournament this past
weekend at Maple Drive.
The Maple Drive coach watched
his team lose just one game as it
swept to first place in the nine-team
event, that one against John McGinnis
in the final.
After coming out of its side of the
round-robin with a perfect 9-0
mark. Raiders breezed by Frank
Ross of Dawson Creek in the semifinal
15-8, 13-15 and 15-6.
John McGinnis gave Maple Drive
a scare by winning the opening game
of the final 13-15, but Raiders went
on to take the championship with
15-9 and 15-13 victories in the final
two games of the match.
GIRLS
The Maple Drive girls team matched
its male counterpart by winning
the female portion of the same
tournament.
Raiders swept through the roundrobin
portion of the event with a 7-2
record in the nine-team event, giving
the club first place and a berth in the
semi-finals against Dr. Kearney.
Maple Drive downed Kearney
13-15, 15-6, 15-9, putting Raiders
into the' final against Central of
Dawson Creek.
Central had defeated Burt Bowes
of Fort St. John 8-15, 15-8, 15-5 in
the other sem-final match.
Raiders then downed Central
15-5, 6-15, 17-15, giving them the
tournament championship.
vantage on two occasions during the
contest, plays which virtually turned
the game in their favor.
With Quesnel behind 14-0 and
still in the contest, Lions' Darrell
Tehnant was on his way into the end
zone on a 60-yard pass and run play
when he had the ball stripped away
at the 4 yard-line.
Then late in the third quarter,
after the Quesnel defence had held
Prince George deep in Rams territory.
Lions blocked the ensuing
punt — only to have a Prince
George player pick it up and run for
the first down.
Four plays later Rams connected
on a 60-yard pass and run play to
put the game out of reach.
REBELS
The Lions and Rebels could have
switched plots and still come up
with the same story.
The defence played well, but the
offence couldn't come up with the
points in a 32-0 setback against
Prince George Colts.
"On defence, we shut them down
pretty well," said Rebels co-coach
Denny White. "Even though they
gave up 32 points, they didn't have
that bad of a game.
"Offensively, we just can't get
untracked."
Rebels were burned twice early in
the game with long-bomb strikes for
b u m s
15-7, 15-2 in the semi-final before
going on to down Vanderhoof
15-13, 15-8 in the final.
Correlieu's Steven Letoria was
named to the tournament first allstar
team and capped that by being
selected the event's Most Valuable
Player.
Bill Hazard was also named to the
first team, while Terry Kohlhauser
was selected to the second all-star
squad.
Correlieu is now gearing up for
the Prince George tournament this
weekend.
"There's a lot more competition
there," said Gamache. "There
should be a lot more better teams
there."
GIRLS
Correlieu's senior girls volleyball
team didn't fare quite as well as the
touchdowns and it put Quesnel
behind to stay.
Prince George added another
first-half major and put two more
on the board in the second lo complete
the damage.
"It was one of the few games we
didn't block well," said White.
"That's the whole key to it.
White said there were a couple of
bright spots during the game, in particular
the play of defensive ends
Sarge More and Shawn Redden and
running back Rick Gagnon.
The game was the last regular
season contest of the year for Rebels
and the loss left them in second
place going into the playoffs two
weeks from now.
Ironically, Rebels earn a bye into
the playoff final because of the
withdrawal of the last place team.
Prince George Rams.
The first-place Colts will play the
third-place Bombers in the opening"
round of the playoffs, with the winner
facing Quesnel in the final.
HUSKIES
Clint Honour went over the middle
on a quarterback sneak on the last
play of the game to give Huskies the
tie in Prince George.
Honour, who had an earlier major
called back, set up the
touchdown with a 15-yard run the
play before.
boys, winning two of its games and
losing four.
Correlieu defeated Prince Geroge
and D.P. Todd in the event, but fell
to D.P, Todd in another match and
lost to Prince George Senior Secondary,
College of New Caledonia and
Columneetza of Williams Lake.
Columneetza eventually won the
tournament.
"We played really well," said
Correlieu coach Tammi
"Prince George Senior Secondary
was one of the best team and we
were quite close against them," said
Schellenberg. "So we're quite pleased."
