GlossaryA&E survey (Emergency department survey)<strong>The</strong> A&E survey is coordinated nationally by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as partof the <strong>NHS</strong> patient survey programme. It asks about the experiences of people who havevisited an emergency department. <strong>The</strong> A&E survey was conducted in 2003, 2004 and2008. It uses a postal self-completion survey approach, and isconducted among a sample of recent patients who spent at least one night in hospital. <strong>The</strong>survey covers both elective and emergency care patients, but does not include maternity,mental health patients or patients under the age of 16. <strong>The</strong> annual survey typicallyachieves responses from around 70,000 patients across England (a total response rate ofaround 50%).
