Through our “I’m a SickKids kid” advertising campaign, we invited former and current patients and families 

to tell us their stories. They responded, in numbers beyond our expectations, with inspiring tales about the 

difference the Hospital has made in their lives. It was deeply touching for us to be reminded of how SickKids 

has profoundly affected the lives of so many. 

This strong connection to the Hospital translated into a record-breaking year for SickKids Foundation, with 

donations of $106.8 million. Whether through our Miracle Club monthly giving program, employee group 

pledges, corporate partnerships, community events or major individual gifts, tens of thousands of people and 

organizations stepped forward to support our vision: Healthier Children. A Better World. We were particularly 

inspired by the transformational gift of $30 million from the Garron family for cancer research and care. It is 

believed to be the single largest philanthropic investment ever made to paediatric cancer in North America. We 

are deeply grateful to the Garrons and to all of our donors for their outstanding support. 

Excellence, integrity and collaboration are the values that underlie the Foundation’s new five-year Strategic 

Directions, which was approved by the Board of Directors in December 2010. Developed in partnership with 

the Hospital, our volunteers, staff and donors, the new strategic plan provides the framework to drive future 

Foundation fundraising and granting activity and enable even greater investments in paediatric care, learning and 

research. Our thanks to Andrew Sheiner, who chaired the Strategic Directions committee, and to all members 

of the committee for their fine work. 

In May 2010, the Hospital and Foundation broke ground on the $400-million new SickKids Research & 

Learning Tower and launched a $200-million fundraising campaign, led by Foundation Director Tim Hockey. 

This new facility provides the space our researchers and scientists need to advance their world-leading research. 

Since the campaign launch, more than $48 million has been committed from the Hospital and Foundation 

Boards and employees and from the community. This is an achievement we can all celebrate. 

This annual report is full of moving stories about how your support is making a difference. Our heartfelt

1972 to invest in health and scientific advances to improve the 

lives of children and their families in Canada and around the

research, learning and care at The Hospital for Sick Children to

When our SickKids kids grow up, they become valued members of their communities. 

They are family, friends, neighbours and colleagues, each with a different story to

Thanks to donors like you, SickKids Foundation is the largest charitable funder of 

child health research, learning and care in Canada. 

Through our national grants, SickKids Foundation provides funding across the 

country to help strengthen Canada’s knowledge and capacity to respond to child 

health needs. 

Our grants support young researchers early on in their careers and provide families 

with access to the most up-to-date information about child health care. Thanks to 

you, our funding stretches coast to coast to ensure well-trained researchers continue 

to investigate the most pressing childhood diseases and conditions. 

Children from around the world travel to SickKids to receive surgical treatment 

not otherwise available to them. To date, thanks to donations, the Herbie Fund has 

provided financial support to 656 children from 101 countries. 

Our reach goes beyond international patient care. We also provided $900,000 for 

the Hospital’s global humanitarian efforts last year. This support provided training 

at SickKids for international fellows and advanced our child health projects in 

countries including Ghana, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Our international programs 

have reached children in more than 75 countries.

SickKids is so much more than a children’s hospital. It is a place of 

hope for patients and their families, a hotbed for groundbreaking

of future generations. Founded in 1875, the world-class work of 

SickKids is driven by the integration of research, learning and care. 

The 1930s creation of Pablum and its subsequent licensing, along with a visionary 

gift from the J.P. Bickell Foundation, provided SickKids with the funding to establish 

the Research Institute. Now the largest child health research institute in Canada, it 

is a centre for excellence and innovation that places SickKids on the world’s stage 

of health-care expertise. Researchers from around the world are drawn to SickKids 

to help prevent disease, find cures and transform children’s health. 

An investment in science at SickKids provides us with the necessary tools to get 

innovative research out of the lab and put into practice sooner. Our discoveries 

improve children’s health here in Canada and around the world. 

From the development of the first school for children at SickKids in 1892, to 

the creation of Canada’s largest training program for child health clinicians and 

researchers, learning has always been at the heart of everything we do. The SickKids 

Learning Institute connects our scientific discoveries with our excellent care. The 

Institute is vital to the role SickKids plays as a world leader and provides the

taking shape… 

The future of healthier children is beginning 

to take shape at SickKids. After 13 short months, 

our beacon of research and learning is already 

reaching into the sky. 

The new Research & Learning Tower will stand 

21-storeys high and accommodate the most 

specialized research and learning needs. Designed 

by Diamond and Schmitt Architects, with HDR Inc., 

the Tower will, for the first time, provide a single 

home for all SickKids researchers, allowing them 

to work together like never before.

Increasingly, leading-edge child health research 

happens because researchers share ideas. The new 

building is designed to reflect this growing need. 

Inside its walls, researchers investigating child 

health issues will work in close proximity to one 

another in “neighbourhoods.” Spanning two to 

three floors and connected by open-concept 

spaces, these neighbourhoods will encourage 

interaction and collaboration among researchers 

to help seed groundbreaking new ideas. 

Building on the momentum of The Research 

& Learning Tower groundbreaking ceremony 

in May 2010, SickKids Foundation has so far 

secured more than $48 million in donations 

towards our three-year, $200-million campaign 

goal. This investment from donors is the kind 

of forward thinking that will help propel research 

and transform children’s health. 

Together, we will build this Tower from the ground 

up. Together, we will push child health research into 

the future. 

The Tower is set for completion in 2013.

Malachi’s heart began to fail before he was born. His mother 

underwent an emergency C- section to keep him alive. But even 

the expertise at SickKids couldn’t keep his heart from failing 

again. Malachi got a new heart to keep him alive. 

A place for ‘kids 

with special hearts’ 

Each summer, ‘kids with special hearts’, like Malachi, get to join other kids just 

like them at a week-long, medically supervised camp in Muskoka, Ontario. 

Camp Oki is run entirely by volunteers from the Labatt Family Heart Centre 

at SickKids. The Camp is free of charge to patients ages eight through 16 with 

heart disease. 

In 2010, Camp Oki received a $1-million gift from Cardiac Kids and The Firkin 

Group of Pubs to help make the camp even better. Generous donations like 

that will help camp founder and SickKids cardiologist, Dr. Joel Kirsh, realize his 

vision of growing the week-long session into a full summer experience. 

While Malachi is still too young to attend Camp Oki, he stays busy brushing up 

on his swimming, soccer and basketball skills and pays visits to the Heart Centre 

for checkups. He wants to keep his special heart in shape so he can get the most 

out of this summer. 


I’m a kid and a fashionista

cystic fibrosis 

One in every 

3,600 children 

born in Canada 

has cystic fibrosis 

Every day, Amanda pushes her limits to improve her quality of life. 

This could mean climbing just one more flight of stairs – which 

can sometimes leave her gasping for breath. Amanda has cystic 

fibrosis (CF), a condition that affects the lungs and the digestive 

system, making it tough to breathe. For her, every extra step is 

a big accomplishment. 

A history of firsts in cystic 

fibrosis research at SickKids 

More than 20 years ago, scientists at SickKids discovered the gene responsible 

for CF. Since then, our CF Centre has produced many ‘firsts’ to help make this 

incurable condition more manageable. And it is the investments made by donors, 

such as Arnold and Lynn Irwin’s commitment to CF education and research, 

that have helped make these ‘firsts’ possible. 

We discovered that a high caloric diet can significantly improve the health and 

life expectancy of CF patients. We conducted the first genetic study to examine 

the ethnic makeup of the North American CF population, which demonstrated 

there is ethnic diversity among people with the disease. And, we developed 

two world-renowned databases which enable critical research and ongoing 

improvements in patient care. 

Amanda knows a lot about what it takes to manage her condition. Diagnosed 

at age four, she was treated at SickKids until she turned 18. She’s had a difficult 

path but, when it gets hard, she takes it in stride, one step at a time.

kidney transplant 

recipient 

Santa Claus never misses a stop on his route, and that includes 

SickKids. After undergoing a kidney transplant at the age of 15, 

Justin woke up in the Critical Care Unit to see Santa at the end of 

his bed. Memories like this make him look back at his SickKids 

experience so fondly. 

Out-of-the-box thinking 

drives regenerative medicine

one of the busiest 

in North America 

with more than 800 

kidney transplants 

performed to date 

Justin has since undergone two more transplants as an adult. And because the 

life of a transplanted kidney is, on average, 10 to 15 years, he will likely require 

another transplant in the future. 

A specialized group of SickKids researchers is hoping they can change that 

by using stem cells to repair and/or regenerate tissues, including kidneys. 

While still a long way off, support from forward-looking donors is helping 

to turn this kind of out-of-the-box thinking into a life-changing reality. 

The Minto Foundation recently became one of those forward-thinking 

donors with a $1-million gift to the Transplant Centre. 

In his adult life, Justin lets his creativity flourish as the owner of an ad agency 

with a passion for singing in his spare time. He works tirelessly to improve 

organ and tissue donation awareness and, this year, he is giving back to SickKids 

Foundation in a special way by joining its Board of Directors.

When Jody brought her eldest daughter Vanessa to see an 

orthopaedic specialist at SickKids, it brought back lots of 

memories. At 18 months old, Jody underwent surgery at SickKids 

for a partially formed hip socket. She spent long hours learning 

how to walk all over again. 

Making the long road 

to recovery shorter and easier 

Rehabilitation touches a large number of patients recovering at SickKids. Our 

occupational therapists and physiotherapists manage close to 35,000 patient visits 

each year. Recently, thanks to $1 million from the Friends of Tie Domi, the 

rehabilitation facilities received a much-needed update. The bright and refreshing 

renovations were a welcome change from the aging 1950s design. 

Rehabilitation often goes hand-in-hand with pain management on the road to 

recovery. Research has shown that well-managed pain is associated with faster 

recoveries, fewer complications and more efficient care. Many donors have 

invested in initiatives designed to limit, if not eliminate, patient pain across all 

areas of the Hospital. 

Much to Jody’s relief, the specialist at SickKids determined Vanessa did not require 

treatment. Still, it gives Jody peace of mind to know that capable hands will always 

be ready at SickKids to provide her two daughters with world-class care.

Cameron, 16,

diagnosed with 

autism 

For Valerie, discovering her son Cameron had autism spectrum 

disorder (ASD) gave her peace of mind. Valerie had struggled 

for more than two years to find out why her son was not hitting 

his developmental milestones. SickKids researchers provided 

a diagnosis and an early intervention plan for Cameron. Later, 

when Valerie’s third son Thomas was also diagnosed with ASD, 

she knew SickKids research would help both her sons reach their 

full potential. 

Unlocking the mysteries 

of the human genome

While long suspected, finding proof of a genetic link to autism has been difficult. 

Investments during the early days of research into the human genome allowed 

SickKids scientist Dr. Stephen Scherer and his team to develop technologies to 

perform the most advanced genome-scanning experiments in the world. 

Dr. Scherer is now co-leader of an international research initiative, the Autism 

Genome Project, which has identified a genetic cause of autism in 15 per cent 

of all cases. This will help provide parents like Valerie with more answers in the 

form of diagnostics and treatments for this devastating disorder. 

Today, Cameron and Thomas are helping to propel research into ASD by 

participating in research studies. With their help, we will discover the factors 

contributing to the remaining 85 per cent of cases.

Diagnosed with infant leukemia shortly after birth, nine-monthold 

Inseeya has only ever known chemotherapy, checkups and 

needle pokes at SickKids. For her, they are just part of her routine. 

At the forefront 

of cancer care and research 

This year, cancer care and research at SickKids received a $30-million boost 

from the Garron family, which will impact patients like Inseeya. Believed to be 

the single largest private gift to paediatric cancer in North America, the gift 

established The Garron Family Cancer Centre. 

This visionary donation will generate four new research chairs and two 

clinician-scientist positions at SickKids. It will fund innovative therapies and 

support the Cancer, Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine neighbourhood at 

the new Research & Learning Tower, currently under construction. In addition, 

it will help construct one of the first metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) suites 

at a Canadian children’s hospital. This facility will revolutionize the way we can 

provide therapy to certain types of paediatric cancer. 

Happy and bubbly, Inseeya doesn’t yet realize the scope of what she has faced. 

But because of gifts like the investment from the Garron family, SickKids will 

stay at the forefront of cancer care and research to help children like Inseeya live 

longer, more fulfilling lives.

The endowment funds of SickKids Foundation provide an important base of funding for children’s health 

research, learning and care at The Hospital for Sick Children. For the year ending March 31, 2011, the 

Foundation saw a 4.4 per cent increase in the value of its endowment fund to an all-time high of $610.8 million. 

During the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011, $7.7 million of fundraising revenue was endowed, $7.1 million 

was recorded in investment earnings, $5.2 million transferred into the fund in accordance with Board Policy 

and a surplus of $6 million in general surplus was transferred to the Board-endowed funds.

The SickKids Foundation Board of Directors manages the Managed Investment Fund (MIF), with assistance 

from the Board’s Investment Committee. All investment funds named or otherwise are invested into the MIF. 

The Investment Committee, which exercises care, skill, diligence and judgment, is tasked with monitoring the 

performance of the Investment Managers.

A model for volunteer and philanthropic leadership 

On June 14, 2011, Patsy Anderson presided over her last meeting as Chair of the 

SickKids Foundation Board of Directors. Her decade-long tenure on the Board – the 

last five as Chair – was a time of tremendous growth at SickKids. In her first year on 

the Board, the Foundation raised a total of $66.7 million. This year, the Foundation 

raised $106.8 million – a 60 per cent increase over a challenging economic period. Patsy 

and her husband Jamie have themselves generously contributed more than $1 million to 

SickKids. But her impact goes far beyond dollars raised. 

Patsy has emerged as a model of volunteer and philanthropic leadership in Toronto and across the country. Her passion 

for SickKids over the years has been contagious. She often referred to serving on the Foundation Board as the “greatest 

honour” in the life of a volunteer. “We have the dream cause,” she said. Her enthusiasm, coupled with the personal time 

and energy she has contributed to the Foundation, have been central to creating and nurturing the exciting momentum 

we are now experiencing. 

As we say a heartful “thank you” to Patsy, we also remember that she is symbolic of the many tremendous volunteers 

and donors that we are privileged to work with at SickKids. We thank you all!

I’m a SickKids kid and Meatball’s best friend 

Zoë has a gentle touch with her new dog Meatball but knows 

how to be tough when he acts up. She would know a lot about 

being tough after years of treatment. 

Born with a congenital heart defect, Zoë underwent a life-saving 

heart transplant at SickKids at eight months old. While it fixed 

her heart condition, she developed a type of cancer that can 

occur in patients on anti-rejection medication. 

Now, Zoë’s treatment is ongoing but she has her best friend 

Meatball by her side to help her through the process.
