LETTER FROM THE EDITOR<br />

<strong>Parish</strong> and Community News October 2012<br />

We have chosen as our theme for the month - ‘Season of Mists and<br />

Mellow Fruitfulness’ from John Keats' poem, ‘To Autumn’, c. 1820:<br />

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,<br />

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;<br />

Conspiring with him how to load and bless<br />

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;<br />

To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,<br />

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core......<br />

By now you may have been enjoying the abundance of fruit and<br />

vegetables which are produced every year at around this time. As well as<br />

those things which we grow in our own gardens there is always a free<br />

harvest which we can gather from our English hedgerows. Blackberries,<br />

Elderberries, Rose-Hips, Sloes and so on, you will probably know many<br />

more than us. These can be used in recipes for delicious desserts, jams<br />

and chutneys but also for herbal remedies and drinks. Chutneys and<br />

pickles made now should be matured and ready for use at Christmas, as<br />

will such things as Sloe Gin.<br />

(We would always advise not to eat anything from the hedgerows unless you are sure of what it is)<br />

October is also the time to make traditional Christmas puddings and<br />

Christmas cake if you want the flavours to be fully matured.<br />

IN THE GARDEN<br />

If you had a glut of tomatoes this season try making some tomato<br />

ketchup. You'll find a recipe in a good cook book. Or the more culinary<br />

gifted you are try making some tomato chutney.<br />

If you have an allotment garden you've probably lifted the last of your<br />

potato crop. Having completed this task, just leave the soil roughly turned<br />

over in large clods of earth. The soil will over winter. Kindly old Jack Frost<br />

will do his work for us along with the winter rain which will break down<br />

the soil into a fine tilth. This is particularly good for heavy clay soil but not<br />

so important on sandy soil.<br />

Don't forget to continue dead-heading your flower beds you may just<br />

encourage a late flush of flowers. By removing the spent flower heads of<br />

perennial plants you should see flowers right through to the first heavy<br />

frost. The plants are tricked into producing more flowers in order to<br />

reproduce more seed. Also, by dead-heading your flowers, pay attention to<br />

the flower borders as well and this will improve the general appearance of<br />

your flower beds at this time of the year.<br />

Now is the time to start thinking about planting next years spring display<br />

of bulbs. There is a huge choice in Nurseries and in specialist grower<br />

catalogues. Along with Daffodils and Narcissus try a deep red Tulip<br />

planted in a bed of multi-coloured wallflowers.<br />

The weather has just started turning colder, leaves are beginning to drop,<br />

we've not had much of a summer this year so it wouldn't be a surprise to<br />

me if we have an early Autumn. So when the leaves start dropping on your<br />

lawn just pick them up in small quantities to start, it will make the bigger<br />

job seem a little smaller. Don't leave the debris on your lawn as this will<br />

encourage disease and dead patches on the grass.<br />

If you want some Christmas Colour place three Hyacinth bulbs in a terra-<br />

cotta pot, close together but not touching, cover with a multi- purpose<br />

compost, leaving the tips of the bulbs just showing above the surface.<br />

Place in a cold frame outside, when the green shoots appear take them<br />

inside and enjoy the flowers.<br />

Bacton, <strong>Cotton</strong> & Wyverstone Good Neighbour Scheme<br />

The scheme is a non-religious volunteer based group that assists the<br />

community from within. There are thirty-five volunteers covering the three<br />

villages, all have been CRB checked and are covered by Public Liability<br />

Insurance. To date the scheme has received nineteen calls for assistance since<br />

it started on 21 st May 2012. The majority of calls have been for help with<br />

transport to hospital, both Bury and Ipswich, and many local journeys.<br />

Prescriptions have been collected and gardens tidied on a one off basis.<br />

The AGM took place on Monday 10 th September, in the community room at<br />

St. Mary’s Church, Bacton. The following committee members were elected<br />

for the year ending September 2013:<br />

Chair Person - Hilary Smith, Secretary - Mike Hall<br />

Treasurer - Mark Rowbottom, Committee Member - Bernard Gant<br />

for assistance call 07980 948641 from 9am to 5pm Monday to Fridays,<br />

though assistance required can be outside these times. Please call if you need<br />

any help with transport, befriending, letter writing, form filling, minor repairs,<br />

pet help, collections, including prescriptions and one off garden tidying. The<br />

scheme is now looking at fund raising to ensure it has sufficient resources to<br />

cover expenses over the coming year.<br />

WYVERSTONE <strong>PARISH</strong> COUNCIL REPORT John Bean<br />

Wyverstone <strong>Parish</strong> Council met on Sept 4th<br />

Phil Webb has kindly agreed to continue as co-ordinator for the<br />

speedwatch team but more team members are required, please<br />

contact Phil if you are willing to help.There is still a need for a<br />

Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, anyone interested please<br />

contact the clerk on 01449 781343. The making of a new notice board is in<br />

hand. It is regretted that Mike Hind has resigned from the council due to<br />

health problems, appreciation was expressed for all Mike had done as a<br />

councillor. Anyone wishing to be considered for co-option please contact<br />

the clerk. Jane Storey reported on the activities of the County Council and<br />

Roy Barker for Mid-Suffolk. Simon Williams reported on the success of the<br />

Lottery Club for Play Area funds and already £300 has been raised. There<br />

are still some vacant numbers, please contact Simon. The new swing seats<br />

for the Play Area have been purchased and fixed. Volunteers kindly agreed to<br />

cut back the overgrown path on Church Hill. The Clerk is to report the bad<br />

state of the street signs for Church Road & Rectory Road at the Church Hill<br />

junction. The next meeting will be on November 6th at 7p.m.<br />

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Women’s Section :<br />

Numbers were down due to holidays and illness but the Exhortation and<br />

Silent Tribute were duly rendered as always.<br />

Donations to Suffolk and National have been made following the Bacton<br />

Fayre Lucky Dip Stall and the half share of the Bacton RBL Jumble Sale<br />

profits as the ladies had helped. The Chairman Angela Elmer thanked the<br />

members for their input.<br />

The speaker was Will Gray who ran a powerpoint presentation on the many<br />

beautiful wild flowers to be found growing in Suffolk and further afield.<br />

Angela thanked Will for the lovely photographs and big screen presentation.<br />

The next ‘B’ Group meeting is at St. Peter’s Church Hall, Stowmarket and<br />

will be attended by 8 members when the speaker will be Dr. Thompson on<br />

“ The Royal Family ”.<br />

A team will attend the Village Hall Quiz on 6 th October.<br />

The 2013 Programme has been booked.<br />

The Branch will reach its 60 th Anniversary on 17 th April, 2013 and it was<br />

decided to celebrate this in the Village Hall on 20 th April, 2013.<br />

BACTON <strong>PARISH</strong> COUNCIL REPORT Jane Brookman<br />

The parish council met on 17 September 2012 and a report will<br />

appear in the next issue of the <strong>Parish</strong> Magazine.<br />

The next meeting of the parish council will be on Monday, 22<br />

October 2012 in the Village Hall, Bacton commencing at 7.30 pm.<br />

COTTON <strong>PARISH</strong> COUNCIL REPORT Colin Hall<br />

An application to build a single storey extension at Dandy Hall, Willow<br />

Lane, was supported by the <strong>Parish</strong> Council as was the application<br />

to build a two storey extension to the rear of Lime Tree Farm,<br />

Parkers Road. The application to demolish two dwellings at 1-2<br />

Broadway House, Broad Road and erect 4 dwellings was supported<br />

by the Council provided that concerns over vehicular access onto<br />

Blacksmith Road and Broad Road are satisfactorily addressed.<br />

It has been brought to the Council’s attention that some hedgerows in the<br />

village are becoming overgrown which is causing problems especially at<br />

road junctions. It would be greatly appreciated if property owners would<br />

trim back hedges on a regular basis.<br />

Dr. Dan Poulter our MP is due to attend the Community Café at <strong>Cotton</strong><br />

Village Hall on Saturday 27 th October between 10.00am &12.00 noon.<br />

The next scheduled Council meeting is to be held on Wednesday 3 rd<br />

October at 7.30pm in the village hall.<br />

In Memoriam<br />

John Miles 14th June 1958 - 8th August 2012<br />

John was buried at St Andrews Church <strong>Cotton</strong> on August the 23rd<br />

The funeral service was held at <strong>Cotton</strong> Methodist Chapel<br />

We were all shocked and saddened by the sudden and unexpected demise of<br />

John Miles who was our friend, very well known and a respected member of the<br />

community.<br />

A <strong>Cotton</strong> man born and bred, who had a genuine love of the land and machinery,<br />

especially tractors of which he had rebuilt many.<br />

Kind and humorous, always there to give a helping hand, coping with our tears as he<br />

helped with the burial of our dogs, a friend indeed.<br />

John was well loved as the enormous attendance at his funeral proved.<br />

John will be sorely missed, he has gone - but will never be forgotten.<br />

BACTON & WYVERSTONE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY<br />

At the September meeting, members had the opportunity to catch up on<br />

the life and times of Ben Potterton of Blacksmith’s Cottage Nursery,<br />

Langmere near Dickleburgh.<br />

The Society had visited the nursery in 2006 for a memorable evening visit<br />

and Ben said many changes have been made recently, including erecting a<br />

building for an art gallery and lecture room, a veterinary room, new shop<br />

and cafeʹ′. The nursery has been knocked flat and is due to re-open in<br />

March next year. The exotic animals and birds now number 449 and some<br />

have gone to London Zoo and some back to the wild.<br />

Ben has also become a father 10 months ago to Rowan.<br />

His talk was on late summer colour and he had brought along cuttings of<br />

many plants.<br />

The importance of pruning out flowered branches to encourage<br />

prolonged flowering was emphasised with Fennel being cut 7 times during<br />

the year.<br />

Chairman Diane Gladders thanked Ben for a return visit and it was nice to<br />

hear what is happening at the nursery and thanked him for entertaining us.<br />

Diane welcomed 3 visitors to the meeting.<br />

A coach left Bacton Village Hall for Pensthorpe on Saturday, 15 th<br />

September at 9.00am.<br />

Bryan Symonds agreed to bulk order seeds from Sutton before he leaves<br />

for Australia in December.<br />

Treasurer Anita Leggett stated that she wishes to stand down from being<br />

Treasurer.<br />

Members voted to move the Society’s savings to Barclays. The accounts<br />

are now computerised.<br />

A team will attend Bacton Village Hall Quiz on 6 th October.<br />

Diane thanked those that exhibited or helped at Bacton Flower Show.<br />

The Christmas meal will be cooked and enjoyed at the Village Hall with its<br />

new facilities.<br />

Free Courgettes were on offer from John Gladders.<br />

The Monthly Draw was won by Shelia Brown.<br />

BACTON & DISTRICT W.I. Monday September 2nd 2012<br />

Our September meeting took a historical turn as our speaker<br />

for the night was Rosemary Muntus who makes costumes for<br />

the re-creations at Kentwell Hall. The competition was ‘Dress<br />

as a Tudor’ and two of us (President and Vice-President) took<br />

up the challenge. We therefore spent what turned out to be a<br />

wonderfully warm ‘summer’ evening dressed in yards of wool!<br />

We were treated to a powerpoint presentation which ran<br />

through a potted history of the Tudor Kings and Queens going<br />

into the Elizabethan period. It was fascinating to find out more about the elaborate<br />

construction of many of the costumes. We heard that it could take 5 hours for a<br />

gentlewoman to get fully dressed, even with the assistance of a great many servants.<br />

Rosemary is a very accomplished seamstress and brought with her some extremely<br />

complex and authentic outfits which we were able to examine closely.<br />

Our next meeting will be our annual birthday party on October 1st. Unfortunately<br />

this meeting will not be open to visitors as it has to be booked.<br />

On Nov 2nd there will be a Soup and Puds in Bacton Village Hall. Tickets available<br />

A Word from the Rectory<br />

CHURCH <strong>NEWS</strong><br />

Well, the harvest’s in, and it’s a much better harvest than was feared, back in<br />

March when the ground was cracking and the rain seemed to fall on everyone<br />

except us! Spare a thought for those farmers in the real drought areas of the<br />

world, for whom the rain never did come this year...<br />

As the evenings draw in, there’s plenty going on in the benefice. Bacton and<br />

Wyverstone celebrated Harvest on the last day of September, but for disappointed<br />

Harvest fans, all is not yet lost – Wickham Skeith has Harvest Evensong at 6.30<br />

p.m. on Friday 5 th October, and on Sunday 7 th October there are Harvest Festival<br />

services at 9.30 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Wickham Skeith and at 3 p.m. in St. Nicholas’<br />

Chapel, Gipping. If you’ve never yet set foot in Gipping Chapel, an unspoilt<br />

fourteenth-century gem with some amazing eighteenth-century wall painting, why<br />

not join us then? There’s a guest speaker from our Harvest charity, Tools With A<br />

Mission, so if you have any unused hand tools that you’d like to send to a useful<br />

new life in Africa, do bring them along.<br />

A joint Church and Chapel fellowship group is meeting on Thursday mornings in<br />

Old Newton Chapel all this month to look at St. Luke’s Gospel together. This is<br />

the book that gives us some of the best-loved stories about Jesus, including the<br />

time when he was twelve and his parents lost him on the way back from<br />

Jerusalem, not to mention the stories Jesus himself told – the Prodigal Son, the<br />

Lost Sheep, the Good Samaritan – and Luke, being a doctor, was particularly<br />

interested in Jesus’ work as a healer too. We start at 10.30, but there’s coffee on<br />

offer from 10 a.m. and you’d be very welcome to come along any time.<br />

On October 12 th and 13 th , Bacton will be celebrating a whole year of SNAP, our<br />

Neighbourhood Outreach Project, with a party in the Community Room – full<br />

details elsewhere in this issue. Also on October 13 th it’s the <strong>Cotton</strong> Gift Day, and<br />

St. Andrew’s will be serving coffee and croissants from 10 a.m. to noon, with a<br />

chance to catch up on the brilliant conservation work done on our unique South<br />

Porch carvings, plus the Friends of <strong>Cotton</strong> Church’s latest project, to restore the<br />

amazing outdoor Belfry gates to their original glory.<br />

Then on Thursday October 18 th there’s a Quiet Day at Brettenham Village Hall<br />

led by Canon Philip Banks, the Precentor of St. Edmundsbury Cathedral – full<br />

details and booking forms are available from the Rural Dean, Rev. Barbara Bilston<br />

(her phone number is 01449-781253).<br />

Oh yes, it’s all happening in the middle of Suffolk!<br />

YEAR OF FAITH<br />

This month marks fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican<br />

Ecumenical Council, which was opened by Pope John XXIII at St Peter’s Basilica in<br />

Rome on 11 th October 1962. All the Catholic bishops of the world met together in four<br />

sessions of several months each year until December 1965.<br />

The Council, known as Vatican II for short, was the most momentous event in the life of<br />

the Catholic Church for centuries. The Italian word aggiornamento was taken by many as<br />

the best way to express its purpose, to bring the Church up to date, seeking to present the<br />

eternal truths of the Church’s faith in the modern world and looking at the problems<br />

confronting Catholics and all Christians in these times.<br />

The Catholic Church throughout the world will be celebrating a Year of Faith, running<br />

from 11 th October until the Feast of Christ the King 2013, to mark the anniversary and<br />

seeking renewed inspiration from the teachings and spirit of the Council for the Church’s<br />

Donations to Missions for Seafarers in memory of<br />

Terry Spalding<br />

Terry has always been interested in the welfare of seafarers. His father, and<br />

many of his relatives, were fishermen in Lowestoft and Terry was well aware of<br />

the harsh and dangerous conditions they often had to face. During the war his<br />

father was in the Merchant Navy and was three times torpedoed on different<br />

ships and each time went missing for a time and was presumed dead.<br />

Terry had been a local rep for many years both in Bacton and, previously, in<br />

Berkshire. He fundraised for the mission, selling their products at church and<br />

village events, and whenever opportunities presented themselves. During<br />

recent years he was active in encouraging people to knit gloves and balaclavas<br />

for seafarers which he passed on to the missions at Felixstowe and Harwich<br />

where both his sister and niece were ships’ visitors for a time, boarding vessels<br />

in port, chatting to seafarers and trying to help with problems or things they<br />

needed.<br />

Both Terry and I frequently attended the annual seafarers’ service at St Paul’s<br />

Cathedral, and met one of the Chaplains at Harwich. The mission was very<br />

dear to Terry’s heart and I know he would be delighted that donations at his<br />

funeral raised a total of £364.85. Thank you to all who donated.<br />

Harvest Traditions<br />

The word Harvest comes from the Anglo Saxon word for<br />

Autumn, ‘Hearfest’ gradually it came to mean the season of<br />

reaping and gathering the crops; the corn in the meadows, the<br />

berries from the hedgerows, the goodies from our gardens and<br />

allotments.<br />

! The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is known as<br />

the Harvest Moon and the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon is<br />

when the end of the harvest was celebrated with suppers and<br />

church services, everyone pleased to have the food for the winter<br />

safe in the barns, no supermarkets in those days!<br />

! It is thought that the first church to celebrate the Harvest<br />

Festival as we do today was at Morwenstow in Cornwall in 1843,<br />

when the church was decorated and the hymns that have now<br />

become our traditional harvest hymns, like ‘All Things Bright and<br />

Beautiful’ were first sung.
