Emergency Management Queensland’s Brisbane-based Bell 412 helicopter
crew prepares to transport an injured Fernvale man after he was crushed
by falling steel recently.
National week gives chance to profile SES
2006 has been an extraordinary
year for the State Emergency
Service (SES), and with National
SES week coming up next month
(November 11-19), I encourage
everyone involved in the SES to
be part of the celebrations.
The week provides a perfect
opportunity to hold community
events and help raise awareness
of the fantastic work done by our
volunteers around the State.
I’m looking forward to travelling to
each of the regions during the week
to participate in the regional award
ceremonies, where individuals and
groups who have made significant
contributions through the year can
be recognised appropriately.
Events such as these are
undeniably important, for both
our volunteers and our paid
staff, as they reward operational
excellence and encourage future
achievement.
SES Week will culminate in a State
Award ceremony to be held on
Sunday, November 19, and will
be followed by a church service to
commemorate the generosity of
spirit that characterises the SES.
On another note, election
commitments made as part of
the Queensland State election
in September have resulted
in increased funding for
several branches of Emergency
Management Queensland (EMQ).
For the SES in particular, the
commitment will provide funding
to improve volunteer training,
enhance SES management
capacity, provide additional SES
equipment, provide funds needed
to implement the standard 132 500
SES contact number, and deliver
enhanced regional technical and
communications equipment.
For marine volunteer organisations
supported by EMQ, including
Volunteer Marine Rescue,
Australian Volunteer Coast Guard,
Surf Life Saving Queensland and
Royal Life Saving Queensland, the
government’s commitment will
provide funding to implement new
beach and marine safety programs
over the next four years.
This funding across the EMQ
portfolio will increase our
capacity to continue to improve
the services we provide to
Queensland communities over
the next few years.
