FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT SELSI 3Dear Friend (Atamswaroop),We are pleased to inform you that a new association SELSI(Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India) wasinaugurated on Saturday, 29 March 2008 at AIIMS, New Delhi, underthe patronship of Prof H S Asopa, Prof I K Dhawan, Prof BML Kapoorand Prof Saroj Chooramani (Vice Chancellor, KGMU, Lucknow). Themeeting was convened by Prof M C Mishra (Head, Dept of SurgicalDisciplines, AIIMS) under the nominated founder president Prof S D Maurya (Formerly Head,Dept of Surgery, S N Medical College, Agra), secretary Dr V K Bansal (Assistant Prof, Dept ofSurgical Disciplines, AIIMS) and presence of all members of executive committee representingndalmost all the states of the country and the delegates of the 2 International Workshop at AIIMS.SELSI was born with the philosophy of ancient teaching pattern of India “The GurukulParampara”- where Guru treats all alike and makes them (pupils) at par to him with love, care &concern and without any monitory involvement.SELSI has embraced, in its fold, all surgeons practicing minimally invasive surgery oraspiring to practice minimally invasive surgery, belonging to any surgical specialty like GenSurgery, Gynaecology, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, G I Surgery, Oncosurgery andGastroenterology. SELSI will provide them a common platform where they can share theirknowledge & skill amongst each other. SELSI feels that unless surgeon practicing or serving atremote places are provided with adequate training opportunities in Laparoscopic Surgery, thesurgical discipline will not progress and the masses will not be benefitted. Unfortunately, thereare only few centres in our country which are imparting training in Laparoscopic Surgery andthat too not adequate in quantity & quality and also most of them have now become morecommercial and lack the spirit of ancient “Gurukul Parampara.”Therefore, SELSI proposes to have many centres all over the country (depending uponthe need) and they would be recognized, supported & monitored by SELSI. These centres will berequested to provide free training to trainee surgeons with utmost love, care and concern bygiving them a few weeks honorary attachment. The trainee surgeon will work as a seniorresident and thus help the pre & post operative aspect of the patients along with his training. Thus, both will be mutually benefitted. The senior faculty will facilitate them to learn theprocedure so that they can perform them independently at their respective centres. SELSI hasalready accredited 3 training centres so far - Minimum Invasive Endo-Training Centre, Dept ofSurgery (AIIMS, New Delhi), Dr. Maurya Sachkhand Hospital (Agra), Hanumant EndosurgeryCentre (Lucknow) and more than 500 surgeons have been trained at these centres so far. SELSIis in search of more centres for accredition as training centre with criteria that these centresshould be doing at least 5-6 laparoscopic surgeries daily and minimum 10-12 differentprocedures with the facility of endo-trainers and willingness of the surgeon for parting theknowledge and skill in accordance to Gurukul parampara with love, care and concern.SELSI proposes to train interested MBBS doctors or para-medical staff for cameraassistance which is an integral & one of the most important part of a Laparoscopic surgeryteam.SELSI will have a state chapter in every state which will be organizing academic activitieslike workshops / CME annually. The following state chapters have already been formed – UttarPradesh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The North East, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir,Uttaranchal and Maharashtra state chapters are in the final stages of their formation.contd...

4 FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT SELSISELSI proposes to encourage young surgeons to organize small workshops at district /sub-district levels where SELSI faculty will demonstrate various Laparoscopic procedures in theoperation theatre in front of 10-15 surgeons of that area with one to one communication, sothat the cost of audio-visual & other paraphernalia is avoided. This will facilitate the spread ofknowledge & skill to country side. SELSI will bear the travel expenses of the faculty. To boost theconfidence of young surgeons, SELSI will encourage them to perform procedures independentlyin the presence of SELSI faculty (as an observer). This will greatly enhance their confidence &skill and will also make them feel that SELSI is an academic body based on institutionalprinciples. In last one year, SELSI has conducted / supported many such workshops like atGonda (UP), Jhansi (UP), Shillong (Meghalaya), Siddhpur (Gujarat), Maurya Hospital (Agra)andat Chitrakoot (MP). Two international conferences organised by Dept Of Surgical disciplines,AIIMS at AIIMS, New Delhi in March 2008 & March 2009 and Ist North Zone conferenceorganized by UP chapter of SELSI at Agra in October 2008.SELSI proposes to establish a helpline with a panel of senior faculty members who willbe requested to give advice on phone call from young colleague when he is stuck in a problemin the operation theatre. SELSI will also provide the references of literature pertaining to CPAcases to its members which will be of great help to them in fighting the legal battle. The list ofhelpline numbers will be distributed to all the SELSI members.SELSI proposes to have a panel of faculty to keep close monitoring of its variousobjectives and thereby maintaining high academic standard. Various data will be collected fromits members to compile for research / publications. SELSI will have its own newsletter, journal &library of books and CDs.SELSI will issue certificates of Clinical Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery bearingSELSI monogram and signed by Convener, President, Secretary & the training faculty tomembers trained at SELSI recognized training centres.SELSI will keep its windows always open for criticism and will keep completetransparency in financial matters. This will facilitate reformation & progress.SELSI will have annual national conferences (the 2nd National Conference of SELSI isth thbeing organized at AGRA on 24 -25 October 2009) and all the state chapters will organizetheir academic meets every year. With these objectives, SELSI welcomes all to join and make it a strong national body inorder to serve the masses. We conclude with the teachings of Rigveda “Sarveh Bhawantu Surivanah, Sarveh SantuNiramaaya, Sarveh Bhadrani Pashchantu, Maa Kashyid Dukh Bhaag BhawetahWith Kind Regards,Your Atamswaroop,Prof. S.
