<strong>International</strong> Influences onAustralian foods.Country Selected –Ukraine.Location of Country –Eastern Europe, bordering the black sea, between Polandand Romania and Moldova in the west and Russia in the east.Climate –Long, cold winters and short hot summers characterise the Ukraine’s continental climate. There isalso plenty of rain. Winter and Autumn also tend to be very cloudy.Geography –Ukraine is bordered by coastline. Most of Ukraine consists of fertile plains and plateaus, mountainsbeing found only in the west. In terms of land use 58% of Ukraine is considered arable land, 2% isused for permanent crops, 13% of permanent pastures, 18% is forests and woodland and the other9% is other.Culture –An assortment of strong culturally identified ethnic groups. Like most Western countries, Ukrainiancustoms are heavily influenced by Christianity. Ukrainian culture is richly embedded in ancienttraditions.Traditions –Christmas is celebrated on January 7 th . In most parts of Ukraine on Christmas Eve people create socalled vertep these are scenes from the bible of Jesus’ birth. Also in some regions people makedecorated Christmas eggs, very similar to Easter eggs.
Crops Grown –Wheat, barley, Maize, Sunflower seed, sugar beet.Wheat: Annual or biennal grass having erect flower spikes and light brown grains.Barley: A cereal grain delivered from the annual grass hordeum vulgare.Maize: Corn, tall annual cereal grass bearing grass bearing kernels on large ears.Sunflower seed: Edible seed of sunflowers.Sugar Beet: White rooted beet grown as a source of sugar.Staple Foods –BREAD. is not only a staple food it also symbols prosperity, divinity, hospitality. Since the firstagrarians settled the Ukrainian land, grains, porridges and breads have become sacred objects ofworkship and rituals.Traditional dishes and foods –Ukrainian cuisine has a rich history and offers a wide variety of dishes.
