FOCUS BRAZILThe History of EternityFor a Brazilian visionWhat comes to mind when we think of Brazil? Football, postcards, samba? Economicdevelopment or the 'favela' (township)? For people seeking a deeper understanding of Brazil, film can be the window tothis complex, diverse and often unequal country.Characterised by thematic diversity and heterogeneous aesthetics, Braziliancinema allows us a global vision through the fascinating culture of film.1236th Durban International Film Festival

This Focus at the 36th DIFF presents a wide range of different genres and formatsfrom different regions, with the objective of bringing to the South African audience anoverview of the rich culture of Brazilian cinema. The films (released between 2013-2014) had to pass through a rigorous selectionprocess as 129 Brazilian titles were released in 2013 alone. Two feature films from the north-east State of Pernambuco, had huge national andinternational festival success: The History of Eternity by Camilo Cavalcanti and a movingBrazilian Dream, an opera movie directed by Marcelo Pedroso that depicts the brazilianeconomical circles. From central Brazil and around the capital Brasília comes the movie White Out,Black In. Directed by Adirley Queiroz and through the black swing of a DJ, the film dealswith social criticism of a non-inclusive divided country longing for transformation.Casa Grande or The Ballad Of Poor Jean, directed by Felipe Barbosa, deals with the hugesocial divide between rich and poor in Brazil. The title alludes to the book of sociologistGilberto Freyre, Casa-Grande & Senzala (1933), that analyses Brazilian society duringthe slavery period. Many years later, the social apartheid is still visible in the cultural, imaginary and socio-economical relations of the country. From Rio de Janeiro, the urban township, comes the principal theme of thedocumentary City of God – 10 Years Later, directed by Cavi Borges and Luciano Vidigal, which investigates the lives of the cast of the movie by Fernando Meirelles following itsworld success. Naked Eye deals with one of the most talented Brazilian musicians, NeyMato Grosso. Directed by Joel Pizzini, this is a treat for audiences.Short films often attain the status of masterpiece. Brazilian shorts The Club by AllanRibeiro, Heartless by Nara Normande and Xirê by Marcelo Pinheiro are such short films. We hope that this will be the first of Brazil's growing participation at the DIFF, andwe look forward to closer bilateral relations between South Africa and Brazil throughco-productions, distribution of films and cultural relations. We are convinced that ourrespective audiences will appreciate this opportunity to share and exchange ideas andstrengthen our unique film cultures.Carla OsórioCurator36th Durban International Film Festival13

FOCUS TUNISIATunisian SpringTUNISIAN FOCUSThe explosion of free speech that followed our Tunisian revolution in January 2011 gavebirth to new cinematographic proposals. Young filmmakers armed themselves withcameras to give voice to their points of view on the new society that was emerging.Seven programmes, of approximately two hours each, including short films, features and documentaries, will be screened in this 36th edition of the DurbanInternational Film Festival. It will be an opportunity for the South African audience to discover Tunisia, acountry with both African and Arab heritage and culture. A young society swept bycontradictory trends mingling modernity, tradition and thirst for other horizons witha strong attachment to their millenary history – a society where women are the mostaudible in defending their acquired rights and fighting endlessly against retrogradeforces.1436th Durban International Film Festival

BastardAll the films that will be screened illustrate this vitality, diversity and the hope thatremains against all odds. A long road still remains to be paved and cinema is there towitness and document the history of our country and our continent. In 1997, three young unknown producers: Jeremy Nathan, Pedro Pimenta and myself, respectively from South Africa, Mozambique and Tunisia, had a dream. We were attending theRotterdam Film festival and thought of producing a South/South series which would innovateand enhance African cinema. Our dream came true and gave birth to 'Africa Dreaming,' a PanAfrican series from six countries, a great success but unfortunately, short-lived.Let’s hope that this dream can live again and become the norm between Africancountries.Dora BouchouchaCurator36th Durban International Film Festival15

themes AND FOCUS AREASAfrica's LOST ClassicsThough younger than many other film industries, cinemafrom Africa has thrilled and inspired through its diversity, innovation and creativity ever since home-grown industriesstarted to develop after the independence of Africancountries. However, it is a sad fact that the dark years of apartheid severely hampered thediversity of South African voices to emerge in the film industry, and that it likewise limitedthe opportunities and possibilities for South African cinema to be part of the developmentof post-independence cinemas across the continent. The post-apartheid era has providedus with the benefit of hindsight to recover some of the classics of critically engaged antiapartheidcinema, and to explore some of the most innovative and astonishing pioneeringwork of African cinema, not accessible to South African audiences at the time of their release. This is exactly what this series of African classics at DIFF sets out to do.The screenings will be accompanied by discussions with experts on African cinema:to reconsider the position of South African film in the history of African cinema as awhole, and to shine a light on the work of directors who have always swum against thetide of aesthetic conformity and political complacency. The screenings will be furthercomplemented by the South AfricanMapantsula launch of Africa’s Lost Classics: NewHistories of African Cinema, edited byAfrican film scholars Lizelle Bisschoffand David Murphy – a new book thatseeks to uncover some of the hiddengems of African cinema. The booklaunch and reception is sponsored byM-Net in collaboration with the Africain Motion Film Festival, an annualAfrican film festival based in Scotland(www.africa-in-motion.org.uk).Come Back, Africa, a unique and veryspecial historical document of its time,a classic masterpiece of docu-fictionthat emphatically depicts the hardshipsand injustices that Black South Africans1636th Durban International Film Festival

The Blue Eyes of Yontasuffered under apartheid. Banned in South Africa at the time of its release, Mapantsulatells the story of Panic, a small-time crook arrested one day with a group of politicalactivists, interrogated by the security police and offered all sorts of financial rewards totestify against the activists sharing his prison cell. The eponymous Badou Boy is the firstin Djibril Diop Mambety's series of charismatic but ultimately doomed rebels. Followingan experimental, fragmented narrative, the film is a hugely innovative African take onlate 1960s psychedelia with a kicking rock soundtrack. In Touki Bouki, Mambety depictswith raw, visceral energy the impending road wreck between the old folk customs, traditions and superstitions, and the enforced adoption of European colonial attitudesin Senegal. In so doing, he provides African cinema with one of its most daring andoriginal works of art. The Blue Eyes of Yonta, directed by pioneering filmmaker FloraGomes, is one of the early films to emerge from the small West African country ofGuinea-Bissau, a beautiful and rarely-seen classic. It follows the story of Yonta, a younggirl who secretly falls in love with an older friend of her parents.Lizelle BisschoffCurator36th Durban International Film Festival17

For as longas we can remember, music has played an important role in comforting the oppressed, toinspiring action or telling true stories and myths. While we often talk about the role of musicin liberation struggles such as the South African case, with legends like Miriam Makebaand Hugh Masekela, we should not forget rebel musicians, singers and song writers andperformers, whose main purpose was not necessarily to convey political messages, but whonevertheless help us to imagine alternative and less confining realities.Filmmaker Adam Sjöberg and rap superstar Nasir 'Nas' Jones explore breakdancingand hip-hop in unlikely places and the most diverse contexts through the film Shake theDust. themes AND FOCUS AREASLeratoShorts ThemeWhat is the value and role of the short film? This is a question that often arises whendiscussing this much maligned and underrepresented aspect of filmmaking. In South Africa, the short film has often seemed to be the province of the studentfilmmaker, a way to learn aspects of the filmic craft before quickly moving on to what isperceived to be more legitimate formats.Over the past few years, however, there is much to suggest that this opinion of theshort film is changing, especially given the number of established filmmakers and artistswho are appropriating the format in experimental and innovative ways. Both The Bioscope Independent Cinema in Johannesburg and The Labia Theatrein Cape Town remain committed to providing a space for short filmmaking in theirrespective programmes. With The Bioscope, it is through screenings of the Oberhauseninternational short film selection and annual releases of live-action and animated shortfilm packages through a partnership with Shorts International, the world’s leadingdistributor of short films. The Labia Theatre profiles short filmmaking through theirhosting of the Shnit International Short Film Festival along with the IndependentMzansi Short Film Festival. The Short Film Project, a partnership between Sweet & Shortand Spectrum in which selected local short films screen before main features during the'Oscar weekend' at Cinema Nouveau, is another encouraging sign that short films are2636th Durban International Film Festival
