Page 6The Zeta CallNew Jersey Zetas Support March of Dimesto Save Babies from Premature BirthIn response to the significant rise in premature births, ZetaPhi Beta Sorority chapters across New Jersey held prematurityawareness events Nov. 2-4 and 9-11, 2012. Zeta membersconducted prematurity awareness activities in houses ofworship, informing worshipers about the infant health crisisthat nearly half a million families cope with each year. ThisXi Tau Zeta Chapter Youthyear marks the 10th consecutive year of Zeta’s participationby leading this nationwide grassroots campaign. The March of Dimes also led a World Prematurity Dayobservance on Saturday, Nov. 17.Xi Tau Zeta Chapter YouthPrematurity affects one out of eight babies born in theU.S. today — a rate that has increased 29 percent since 1981. The numbersare even more alarming for African-American babies who have aone-in-six chance of being born too soon.In addition to the emotional toll, there is a tangible cost to prematurebirth as well. Average hospital charges in the United States for themost severe cases of prematurity were nearly 60 times higher than thecharges for newborn stays without complications. Prematurity is the numberone killer of newborns (in the first month of life), and many of thebabies who survive leave the hospital with lifelong health conditions ordevelopmental disabilities that will place an additional financial burdenon the family.November is designated as Prematurity Awareness Month to remindthe public that premature birth is a crisis and to bring people together tohelp give all babies their nine months.Xi Tau Zeta Chapter, Phi Mu Chapter and Zeta Amicae of Atlantic CityReclamation in NJ—Founders’ Day RoundupBy Soror Mecca K. Help and/or assist to resolve the past issues and restore the commitment to Zeta. Become transparent; if an issue stemmed from discord in the local chapter, seek ways to resolve the issue. If obstacles include finances, personal life, and/or professional life, inquire if the issues have been resolved or if there is something thatZeta can do to help. A motion is a formal proposal by a member, in a meeting, that the groupT take certain action.* A main motion is one whose introduction brings business before an assembly. Strictly speaking, there should be no debate on a matter before a motion regarding it has been made. Only one main motion may bebefore the assembly for action at a time. ** Below are the steps in appropriately making a motion.Eight Steps to a Motion:1. Member addresses the chair2. Assigning the floor — chair recognizes the member and gives her the right to speak3. Member makes the motion — “I move that…”4. Another member seconds the motion (the seconder does not have to agree with the motion)5. Chair states the motion (body cannot debate the motion until it is restated by the chair)6. Debating the question — Maker has the right to speak first in debate. Maker cannot speak against the motion.Chair must make sure all members had the opportunity to speak for and against the motion7. Putting the question — chair makes sure debate is over and calls for the vote. Do not call for abstentions.8.
