Philosophy
Developmental Center of the Ozarks is dedicated to the philosophy that individuals who are
developmentally disabled are first individuals with all the privileges, rights, and responsibilities of
any citizen. As part of this concept, DCO will advocate for the acceptance of individuals who are
developmentally disabled into the community through education and awareness activities, the use of
community sites, homes, and resources for teaching and therapy activities, and networking with other
agencies and organizations to promote the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities.
Our Mission
Developmental Center of the Ozarks makes a positive difference
in the community by providing services which enable individuals to
reach and maintain their optimal level of development.

“ I am amazed
at how much
she progresses
each day.”
When Ella-Jane was
10 months old, she was unable to roll
over, get to a sitting position, or crawl. She was content
wherever she was.
She has been in therapy since that time and is now able to
roll over, get to a sitting position, crawl, and even walk.
Ella-Jane is also starting to explore our house. I finally get
to tell her, “No”! It is wonderful the gains she has made. I
am amazed at how much she progresses each day. Thanks
to all the therapists who have helped Ella-Jane.
We love DCO because it’s home away from home. The
staff are very warm, loving and caring people. We also like
that DCO provides a safe and secure place for parents and
guardians like us to take our loved ones to. It enables us to
do our jobs to take care of them.
Susie has grown so much since she has lived here with
DCO Annual
Meeting
We held
our Annual Meeting March
17th at Uncle Buck’s
Auditorium at Bass Pro.
This is a great time for us
to show appreciation to
our faithful supporters
and share with them how
DCO continues to touch and change lives.
Our parent speaker, Rebecca, shared how DCO therapists helped
her daughter, Claire, get to where she is now. Where before
she could not walk, she
now walks across rooms.
Rebecca also shared how
the therapists encouraged
her personally, reminding
her that Claire is Claire no
matter what.
Grape vs. Grain
We held our Second Annual Grape vs. Grain
event at the home of Nancy and John Price. This
Endowment Fund event is a five-course food
and beverage pairing dinner, allowing guests to
sample and choose if they prefer the wine or beer
selection with each course. For the second year,
wine was the preferred drink, although beer was a
close second. Through this great event, more than
$15,000 was raised to help ensure DCO is able to
continue changing lives for many years to come!
Once again, DCO was a part of the annual
Rotary Clubs of Springfield Rock ‘N Ribs
Festival April 17th and 18th. More than 60
BBQ teams competed, and thousands of
people came out to sample great barbeque in
support of children’s charities of the Ozarks.
Over the years, Rock ‘N Ribs has raised more than
$600,000 for children’s charities. Additional thanks to
Rotary for choosing DCO as a grant recipient and the
$5,000 we received through the 2009 event.
Price Cutter Charity Championship
DCO was honored to again be a part of the Price Cutter Charity Championship
Tournament Presented by Dr. Pepper. This was the 20th year for the
tournament and what a great anniversary year!
Thanks to our sponsors and supporters for this
exciting event. DCO received more than $13,000!
United Way Day of Caring
Several local businesses came out to DCO in August
as part of the United Way Day of Caring. We look forward to this
event each year. Volunteers did lots of painting, landscaping, and sanitizing
to keep our Springfield campus looking good. What a great help they were
to us! Thanks to our participating volunteer partners: ANPAC, Arvest Bank,
American Family Insurance, Associated Wholesale Grocers, and Wilhoit
Properties. We appreciate you!
Gem and Jewelry Show
The 42nd Annual Ozark Mountain Gem &
Jewelry Show was held in October at the
Springfield Expo Center. This family-friendly
event was put on by the Ozark Mountain Gem
and Mineral Society, and they graciously
donated admission and auction proceeds to
DCO. Special thanks to the Ozark Mountain
Gem and Mineral Society for your support of
the programs at DCO.
DCO: A Place for Friends
Shawn says that he loves DCO because this is where his friends are.
Being enrolled in the Technology Learning Center, he’s also grown as an artist, painting very lovely works of art.
One of his greatest joys is working alongside some of his dearest friends and earning money. He is a very
productive member of the “shredding team” of the Pre-Vocational class.
One of DCO’s greatest joys is helping adults like Shawn grow and build meaningful relationships.
