The “Grand Paris” project was an initiative of the President of the Republic of Francein 2007, and is currently being driven by the French Administration in conjunction withthe regional authorities concerned. The Grand Paris project is for a global developmentprogramme for the entire Grand Paris metropolitan area. It embraces multiple prospects,from housing for all, to economic, social and urban development, transport, cultural andsports amenities, architectural quality and sustainable development.The project, which is being supported by elected officials throughout the GrandParis region, by architects and urban planners partnering the regional developmentauthorities, has generated huge momentum and has mobilized every part ofsociety, from developers to transport operators, public and private-sector investors,construction companies and architects.Central to this ambition is the “Grand Paris Express” rail system, a large-scaleinvestment programme to build an orbital light railway system to provide fast, efficientlinks between airports and TGV stations and which will connect all metropolitan centresof development for the benefit of universal employment and access, and notably thoseotherwise deprived of mobility.
