14 15ReligionThe Ati practice a form of animism that involves good and evil spirits.These spirits are nature spirits that often guard rivers, the sea, thesky, as well as the mountains. Sometimes, they may cause disease orcomfort. The Ati from Negros refer to them as taglugar or tagapuyo,which literally means “inhabiting a place.” Christianity has also beenadopted due to less isolation and more contact with “outsiders”.HistoryIn the Philippines the Aetas or Ati ancestors were the ‘aboriginals’ orthe ‘first’ inhabitants of this Archipelago. They most probably arrivedfrom Borneo (perhaps departing from the ethnic group ‘Sepang’) 20-30,000 years ago, through what is thought to be an isthmus (todaywhat remains of that is the island of Palawan) that in the prehistoricepoch connected the Philippine archipelago to that malay land, via aland bridge covered 5000 years ago by sea waters.According to some oral traditions, they also pre-date the Bisaya,who now inhabit most of the Visayas. Legends, such as thoseinvolving the Ten Bornean Datus and the Binirayan Festival, telltales about how, at the beginning of the XII century, the ancestorsof the Bisaya fled from Borneo from the persecution of RajahMakatunaw. Led by Datu Puti and Datu Sumakwel and sailingwith boats called balangay, they landed near a river calledSuaragan, on the southwest coast of Panay, (the place thenknown as Aninipay), and bartered the land from an Ati headmannamed Polpolan and his son Marikudo for the price of a necklaceand one golden salakot. The hills were left to the Atis while theplains and rivers to the Malays. This meeting is commemoratedthrough the Ati-atihan festival. This legend, though, is challengedby some historians.During the Spanish colonization, the tribe made contact with theconquistador Legazpi and were made useful in his colonization of Panay.LanguageUnlike the Aeta of the north, who speak Sambalic languages, the Atispeak a Visayan language known as Inati. As of 1980, the speakersof Inati number at about 1,500. Today few of them know how tospeak Inati and Visaya and Kinary-a are commonly used.FestivalsThe Ati are the central attraction in the Ati-atihan festival, a festivalnamed in their honor. It is said that the festival is held to commemoratethe first appearance of the Roman Catholic Church and the Spaniardsin the province of Aklan. According to oral tradition, the Ati helpedthe Spaniards conquer the native Bisaya and, as a reward, the tribewas given a statue of the Santo Niño.In the Dinagyang festival of Iloilo City, also on Panay, performersare also painted to look supposedly like Ati and are organized into“tribes”, called “tribus”, to perform dances with drums, as the Atisare supposed to have done when the Malay arrived and boughtPanay from the Ati. Dinagyang is held to celebrate this purchase aswell as the arrival in Iloilo of the Santo Niño statue. When the statuefirst arrived in 1967, a tribe from the Ati-atihan festival was invitedto Iloilo to mark the occasion.

16 17Protecting Boracay’s ReefsWritten by Anna MenesesCoral reefs are among the most diverse and beautiful ecosystems in theworld, harboring millions of species of fish, invertebrates and other marinelife. These organisms co-exist in a complex interconnected food web, relyingon each other for survival.Boracay used to have vast areas of abundant coral reefs, which started to declinein the 1990’s due to the boom of tourism, coastal development, destructivefishing, and the failure to manage these changes. Currently, these problemsremain a concern, putting our corals under serious threat of annihilation.The stakeholders of Boracay are coming together and taking the necessary stepsto maintain the coral reefs. Sectoral meetings and orientations were started inSeptember 2009 to raise awareness on the importance and the critical state ofour coral reefs through the “I C.A.R.E.” – Boracay Forever campaign.To initiate better management and protection of this fragile ecosystem,the Municipal Government of Malay, Boracay Foundation, Inc, and BoracayAssociation of Scuba Diving Schools spearheaded a coral reef baseline surveyon some of the marine parks and snorkeling areas of Boracay in collaborationwith the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, Inc. Many groupsparticipated in the activity namely Boracay Young Professionals, BoracaySpecial Tourist Police Office, Malay Lifeguard, Fisheries and Aquatic ResourcesManagement Council, Bantay-Dagat, Community Environment and NaturalResources Office, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 6, andindependent volunteers. Over 20 establishments and individuals, as well as 10dive shops sponsored the event. The survey was conducted from November10 to 13, 2009 and the final report will be completed by February 2010.Selected participants were trained in the survey method to form theBoracay Reef Monitoring Team (RMT). The RMT will be responsible for futuremonitoring of the reef to ensure its better management and protection. TheRMT is a group of dedicated individuals who are passionate about therestoration of Boracay’s coral reefs.During the survey activity, we observed that the reef is under serious stress. The twomain reasons are: (1) high occurrence of algae overgrowth on corals, and greenishwater indicating abundance of phytoplanktons. These are indicators of high nutrients;(2) high tourism activity without proper management. For instance, lack of mooringbuoys at strategic locations to eliminate dropping of anchors on coral.The next activities of RMT will be to train new volunteers to expand themembership and to survey other sites on the east side of the island, mid nextyear. BFI and BASS are trying to raise funds for: monitoring activities; installationof buoys, and; operational management of coral reef priority sites.Full moon Party

30 31Hotels & ResortsWhite Beach, Boat Station 1White Beach, Boat Station 1 is the North section of White Beach thatis home to some of the top luxury resorts on Boracay. Almost all theresorts are directly on the beach, and offer most in-house servicesthat you would expect from high end resorts. The footpath ends, andyou must walk directly down the beach to arrive at the central actionof Station 2.White Beach, Boat Station 2Boat Station 2 is the restaurant, shopping, and entertainment heartof White Beach. Here you can find some of the high-end resorts,and many of the popular pubs and bars. There are some high-endresorts, and many of the popular pubs and bars. D’Mall is also here,a collection of 100 small tourist shops and restaurants that stretchall the way to the main road. This is shopping central, and where alot of the action takes place.White Beach, Boat Station 3White Beach, Boat Station 3 was the last section of White Beach tobe developed. There are some resorts here as well. The beach isprotected by an offshore coral reef.
