Jewish Family Service of the Desert Continues to Help Valley Seniors

Providing Critical Emergency and Essential Services During Summer

Months

Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS of the Desert), serving the valley

since 1982 as a non-sectarian and non-profit organization, continues to

help Valley seniors during summer, as they do year-round. Over the past

year, JFS Senior Care Managers, have processed and distributed over

$25,000 in senior emergency assistance. JFS thanks its generous community

partners including: Jewish Federation of the Desert, United Way of the

Desert, Champions Volunteer Foundation, City of Indian Wells, the City of

Rancho Mirage, the Auen Foundation, SCAN Foundation, Riverside County

Emergency Food and Shelter, Change a Life Foundation and the generous

contributions of the JFS Auxiliary and donors.

JFS receives an increase in requests for emergency assistance during the

Valley’s long hot summer. JFS always verifies income and need paying

vendors directly to assure every dollar is spent where it is most needed.

RECENT ASSISTANCE INCLUDED:

• Paying $270 water bill for a fixed income senior couple due to a severe

water leak;

• Providing $255 worth of dental work to a 67 year old suffering from severe

dental issues and required an extraction;

Thursday July 16

Wangs, INSIDE, 5-7pm

• Paying overdue utility bills in the amount of $160 for an elderly couple

who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren;

• Purchasing $200 in incontinence supplies for a 101 year old who is being

cared for by her son;

• Providing $250 for a 70 year old who needed new glasses an could not

afford them

“JFS’ ongoing financial assistance is part of a continuum of care to prevent

senior homelessness and hospitalizations. When seniors on a fixed income

cannot pay their utility bills they often have to choose whether to pay for

medications or rent and often they end up getting behind on their rent or

in the ER because they have not been taking their medications,” explains

Maureen Forman, Executive Director of JFS of the Desert. “JFS financial

assistance to fixed income seniors is a vital safety net to a very vulnerable

population. Coordinating and in conjunction with the Jewish Federation

of the Desert who meets the emergency needs of Jewish seniors, JFS case

managers are able to screen and provide services to seniors throughout the

valley regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender identity.”

If you know a senior in need or would like to donate to the JFS Emergency

Assistance Fund to keep this important work going please contact JFS at

760-325-4088.

ABOUT JFS OF THE DESERT

For over 30 years, JFS has provided services throughout the Coachella

Valley to those in need, regardless of religion, age, income, ethnicity or life

style. JFS services and programs are made possible through the financial

support of Jewish Federation of the Desert, Desert Healthcare District,

Kaiser Permanente and other grants and the generous support of donors.

Most of the nearly 5,000 men, women and children served are from lowincome

households. They rely on JFS for low cost mental health counseling,

crisis intervention and food support. JFS provides isolated, homebound

seniors with care, transportation and enrichment activities. JFS also offers

counseling and substance abuse education in local elementary schools.

JFS has offices in both Palm Desert and Palm Springs. For information visit

SUSAN

ANTON

23

Susan Anton is a recording

artist and actress who continues

to dazzle audiences

with her talent, charisma

and stage presence. After a

four year absence from her

regular concert series, Anton

is currently rehearsing and

preparing to relaunch her

show in 2015 and take it around the country. She ensures fans that this

newly created show will include favorite elements that they expect and

added surprises to delight and entertain. Susan promises something for

everyone.

When the curtain came down on the July, 2000 performance of The

Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular at the Flamingo Hilton in Las

Vegas, the occasion marked not only the and of Anton's longtime association

with the production (over 5,000 performances) but a milestone

as one of the most enduring and versatile performers in show business.

It was thirty years ago that Anton first burst onto the scene and since

then, she has been captivating stage, television and film audiences. Her

five and a half year tenure with The Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular,

preceded by a two year U.S. National Tour of the same production,

making her a true veteran of the American theater. During time

off from this show, she headlined her own one woman show to sold-out

audiences at the Desert Inn Hotel and brought back to Las Vegas a type

of entertainment rarely found today.

The daughter of a detective and the eldest of five children Anton was

raised in Oak Glenn, California where she entered and won the Miss

California Pageant and went on to become second runner-up to Miss

America. Success soon followed when she inherited the title of Murial

Cigar Girl from singer, Edie Adams and appeared on television commercials

in this role opposite such budding stars as Treat Williams and

Tom Selleck. Anton soon headlined a production called Turn It On with

French heartthrob, Jean-Paul Vignon at Las Vegas' Hacienda Hotel which

led to numerous appearances on The Merv Griffin Show.

Soon Broadway came calling when Anton replaced Candice Bergen in

David Rabe's Tony nominated play Hurlyburly alongside fellow actors

Kevin Spacey, Frank Langella and Danny Aiello while under the direction

of Mike Nichols. She then starred in the U.S. Touring Company

of Neil Simon & Marvin Hamlisch's They're Playing Our Song and then

toured the U.S. with Elizabeth Ashley in A Couple of White Chicks Sitting

Around Talking. Anton returned to Broadway to co-star with Keith Carradine

(and the original Broadway cast) in Tommy Tune's Will Roger's

Follies. She earned critical praise for her work in Eve Ensler's The Vagina

Monologues at the Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco, the Canon &

Coronet Theatres in Los Angeles and the Cashman Center Theatre in Las

Vegas.

Fans of the silver screen will remember this blonde beauty from the

films Goldengirl, Making Mr. Right with John Malkovich, Cannonball

Run 2 with Shirley MacLaine and Burt Reynolds and New Jersey Turnpikes

with Kelsey Grammar.

No stranger to the small screen, she starred on the international series

Sail Away with Susan Anton, the Travel Channel's Las Vegas! produced

by Anton and her husband Jeff Lester, the ABC series Cliffhangers as

well as her own variety show Presenting Susan Anton for NBC. Anton

include guest roles on The Larry Sanders Show, The Ben Stiller Show,

Blossom, Nick Freno:Licensed Teacher, City Guys, Civil Wars, Quantum

Levvy: Where did you grow up?

Gennine: I grew up in Compton, California. Born and Raised.

Levvy: I love that.

by Levvy Carriker

Gennine: I graduated from Compton High School.

Levvy: I was reading up a bit on your beginnings. Who were the ‘Jacksonics’ and how

did your group become ‘The Jackson Sisters’?

Gennine: My musical history stems back to the age of eight when my sisters and I

had a pop singing group, The Jacksonics. We played at various talent shows during

the Summer. What started out as a dare from a local boy group ended up with us

being noticed at one of several Talent Shows we entered one summer. After being

“discovered” we were given the opportunity of a lifetime by entering the world of

entertainment. We then went from “The Jacksonics,” to “The Jackson Sisters”. They

ended up getting us a record deal with Prophecy Records, a subsidiary of Columbia

Records. There were five of us, and the eldest’s name was Jackie, just like the Jacksonsthere

were five of them and their eldest’s name was Jackie. So we went into the studio

and recorded and album. And we went on tour with the Whispers, and the Manhattans.

We did the Soul Train drive. We did the Forum; we opened up for Smokey Robinson.

We did the farewell concert when Smokey was leaving the Miracles. We did some

television shows, specials, and a show with Don Adams, Don Rickles called ‘A Couple

of Dons’. We did some telethons raising money for Sickle Cell. and we also toured. We

toured the East Coast. We released two singles. One was ‘I Believe in Miracles’ and the

other was ‘Why Can’t We Be More Than Friends?’

Levvy: Two great songs by the way, Gennine. Those are awesome lyrics.

Gennine: Aw, thank you. So you can Google those songs. You can find our CDs online.

Google the Jackson Sisters. You will be amazed what comes up! But we are not the

gospel group, we were an R&B group. There were two groups called the Jackson Sisters.

Levvy: I have seen you perform on ‘Soul Train’. How did that come about and what was

the most fun about it? Don Cornelius was, I always thought, so instrumental in helping

get people in front of Americans to listen to their music. What was he like to meet? I

just would love to have had the opportunity to have met him.

Gennine: Well, he was huge. Like you we were enamoured by Don Cornelius. Like

you said, he was instrumental in getting artists ‘out there’, especially new artist, and

catipulting them into California, well, the world! More than California.

Levvy: He had the entire country watching his show. That was a fun show. They are still

doing the lines dancing at some places!

Gennine: Yes, it was. But it turned out that it wasn’t a good experience at all for us.

We were just shocked with how we were treated. I don’t want to really say anything

negative. You know, we were determined to have fun, regardless, us sisters.

Levvy: You know, that is not good to hear. I am going through some very disappointing

things with people I looked up to before once myself. Well you were on Soul Train! That

is what matters!

Gennine: They had us on there twice. The experience with him was just disappointing.

Levvy: Last Summer I had the opportunity to film The Pointer Sisters in Cleveland when I

was taping up there and they are so amazing and friendly. We had a blast. Do you have

any memories of performing with them?

Gennine: Yes! Actually we still have the photo we took with the Pointer Sisters. It was

some function. I can’t remember because I was very young. I was in the group. I was

eleven. We did a function with themand to this day we have that photo. It was the

Jackson Sisters and the Pointer Sisters. Like you said, they were very easy going, fun

loving, down to Earth, and we had a great experience with them.

Levvy: I was so nervous with them for just a few minutes. Then I was able to relax. I thought,

‘this is good’! They are like my next door neighbors or something. They are real people.

Gennine: Exactly!

Levvy: Last spring you did a concert called, ‘The Essence of Whitney’. It has been

written that you are like a double take on her ‘essence’ and ‘voice’. How did that come

about and what was it like to sing her music? It is kind of shocking because you do bear

a great resemblance and your voice is like hers as well.

Gennine: Well, as you may or may not know, I started my solo career in the Desert here

(Palm Springs, CA), so I have been singing out here since about 2001. And all of those years

people have always said, “You look so much like Whitney’, ‘You sound like Whitney’, ‘Can

you do Whitney?’, ‘You need to do a Whitney look alike sound alike’......And for ten years

they have been after me. and for ten years I have said, ‘Noooooo, I don’t want to do her!’

Levvy: And that would be a tough one to take on!

Gennine: That is what I said to myself! I just said, ‘No, no, Whitney is going to come

back and she is going to do her own thing. You guys should just leave me alone! They

would say, ‘No! we want YOU to do it. But I always knew in my heart that Whitney has

huge shoes to fill. She is a very powerful vocalist. Even though people think we sound

alike, we have different chambers that we sing in. and for me to try to successfully pull

off a Whitney concert would be a huge challenge for me. So I never wanted to do it. I

honestly didn’t think that I could. So make a long story shorter, they never left me alone

with that. And then things started happening. Things that sort of put you in a [state of

wonder]. It was extraordinary! Things kept happening and my husband even said to me,

(His pet name for me is Snappy, and for short he calls me Snap.)

“Snap, I think you need to pray about this. I think this is the time.” And this had been

two years since Whitney had passed. He said, “I think this is something you need to

think about”

He kept saying I should pray about it. and I would just say, “Nope! I don’t want to think

about it! And I don’t want to pray about it. Because if God says this is for me to do, then

I can’t say no. As long as I don’t know that this is for me to do I can say no. Then the

oddest things would happen. I mean, people literally thought I was her. I mean, we would

get stared at. And the entire time we would sit in a restaurant, they would stare. And it

was so uncomfortable that sometimes my husband and I would just get up and leave.

Because I couldn’t focus on eating. You know, this is uncomfortable. And people would

come up to me and say, “Are you Whitney Houston?” And I would just look at them,

“Whitney passed away! She’s been passed; been dead for more than a year and a half!”

And they would say, well are you her relative? Are you her sister? And I would say, , ”No!”

One lady said, “But you are ‘Her Angel”. And it just gave me chills. And I would walk on

to elevators and into Walgreens and Whitney Houston would start playing. I couldn’t

get around her. And I started saying, you know what? If this is for me to do then I need

confirmation. Then it just went from there to just weird. I mean, confirmation after

confirmation after confirmation and finally I just stopped in my tracks and said, “I get it. I

am supposed to do it.”

Then I just asked for the confidence. Because I didn’t think I could do this. And it was

already being set up even two years prior. I met Ricky Lawson who is the drummer on

Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. He turned out to be the drummer for open

mic night in the neighborhood where I live in Temecula. And I’ve been going there every

Wednesday for four years now and he was the drummer so I got to know Rickey Lawson

really well and the guy who was hosting would always say, “ You guys have no idea who

this guys is! He is the most sought after drummer in the United States.”

Ricky played on everything that you hear coming up from the late 60’ and 70’s. I mean,

he played on everybody you could name. He played drums for them. And he always

joked about his most famous drum solo that consisted of one beat. And that was that

big boom before Whitney went into that (Gennine sings) “And I....” And that made him

the most money of his entire career! That one beat. So Ricky passed away December

2013. In January of 2014, they gave a memorial concert on his behalf. So I was called on

to sing ‘I Will Always Love You’. So I am singing and there are probably 400 people in

there, jam packed, like sardines, and they are all celebrities and musicians. And so it was

just loud, I mean loud. Here you have everybody that is anybody out there performing.

There were twelve different sets of bands put together for his celebration of life. And

the room never got quiet! It was like this big tailgate party! There was no WOW factor,

because they were all either celebrities, or musicians tooting behind celebrities. So,

it was no big deal to them. It was like a huge family reunion. And maybe about five

percent of the crowd were like me; I came to know Ricky Lawson in his later years.

So we were wild, you know. I knew no one was going to shut up when I get up there.

Because here we had heard the Champaign Kings, and James Ingram, and Dave Koz, and

Jeff Burke and no one cared. So when I get up there, and they called this fabulous band

up to play behind me and so I started singing accapello. And all of the sudden the room

just got quiet. And then by the time the band came in it was...’“And I....” and the band

came in and you could hear a pin drop! And that was the only time the room got quiet.

I got a standing ovation and there were people who were just crying. All over the room

they were just crying. And the accolades I received from that were just overwhelming. It

wasn’t great, in my opinion. I mean, it just wasn’t. But Evelyn Champaign King grabbed

me. She was in tears. “Oh my God, you have done Whitney proud. If she were here she

would be so proud of you.” It was crazy.

So then I am driving home. And mind you, the concert was four hours long. I am driving

home at about one in the morning and in my heart, the Lord just spoke to my heart and

said, “Young lady, you just silenced a room full of seasoned musicians. And you did that

and noone else did that. He said, you can do this. And then I just cried all the way home.

Levvy: Oh, that is a sweet story. I just love that.

Gennine: And that is how the show came to be. At that point, I committed to do it.

And I checked my voice mail and I found a two week old voicemail that said, Gennine,

this is Bob and Ronny. We have been supporting you and we love you and we have

always thought that you should do this Whitney. You just tell us how much money you

need. And that is how it got started. Another thing I found in my heart was to go after

Whitney’s musicians. And sure enough half of the band is from Whitney and the other

half is from Chaka Khan! It ended up being quite a tribute. Reviews said it was ‘other

worldly’, ‘at times they felt like Whitney’s presence was there’, and ‘at times there was

like a big white light following her across the stage. It was just spooky’.

Levvy: Wow! Everybody is still talking about that show. Do you have plans on bringing

the Whitney show back?

Gennine: Actually we are talking about doing it the first quarter of 2016.

Levvy: I am just wondering, has Las Vegas called on you yet? They need to!

Gennine: Well, we just finished the promo reel produced from the concert so when we

get that I will share it. So now it is just a matter of putting that promo out there in front

of promoters.

Levvy: Well Gennine, we are so lucky that WANGS brings your heart and soul to us

regularly on Sunday evenings here in the desert...Palm Springs LOVES you! Do you have

anything you would like to share in closing?

Gennine: Yes, in closing, I would like to say that since this is where my career started,

here in Palm Springs, I appreciate the support and love that I have gotten over the 14

years that I have been here. Just let them know that I love them and they are near and

dear to my heart. And they will never be forgotten. No matter where life takes me. And

if I am blessed to be here in Palm Springs singing for the rest of my days, then so be it.

But if it takes me abroad with the Essence of Whitney and Gennine, then I will always

come back and remember Palm Springs.

Levvy: LOL, right. There will probably be a song written like that some day!

Gennine: Yeah! That’s a good idea. A light just went off in my head!

“VACATION”

Principal photography begins on New Line Cinema’s “Vacation,”

Starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate

BURBANK, CA – The next generation of Griswolds is at it again.

Shooting has begun in Georgia on New Line Cinema’s “Vacation,”

starring Ed Helms (“The Hangover” films) and Christina Applegate

(the “Anchorman” films) on the road for another ill-fated adventure.

The film marks Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s

directorial debut.

Following in his father’s footsteps and hoping for some muchneeded

family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms)

surprises his wife, Debbie (Applegate), and their two sons with

a cross-country trip back to America’s “favorite family fun park,”

Walley World.

Rounding out the cast are Chris Hemsworth (the “Thor” films) in

the role of Stone Crandall, Rusty’s irritatingly successful brotherin-law;

Charlie Day (the “Horrible Bosses” films), who plays a river

rafting guide; and Skyler Gisondo (“Night at the Museum: Secret

of the Tomb,” “Hard Sell”) and Steele Stebbins (“A Haunted House

2”), who play Rusty’s sons, James and Kevin. Chevy Chase and

Beverly D’Angelo reprise their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold

from the classic “Vacation” comedies.

Goldstein & Daley (“Horrible Bosses,” “Cloudy with a Chance of

Meatballs 2”) wrote the script, based on characters created by

John Hughes. David Dobkin (upcoming “The Judge,” “Wedding

Crashers”) and Chris Bender (“We’re the Millers,” upcoming “Horrible

Bosses 2”) are producing, with Marc S. Fischer serving as

executive producer.

The directors’ behind-the-scenes creative team also includes director

of photography Barry Peterson (the “Jump Street” films, “We’re

the Millers”), production designer Barry Robison (“Wedding

Crashers,” “Pitch Perfect”), and costume designer Debra McGuire

(“Ted”).

“Vacation” is a New Line Cinema presentation and will be distributed

by Warner

Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

The whale watching is so good that in one cruise you can view

over half dozen whales or more; the giant blue whale, the

finback, minke, humpback, and even killer whales can all be

viewed as well as gray whale migration during the Winter and

Spring months and the giants of the sea, the blue and finback

whales, during the Summer and Fall months.

Several species of dolphin including the giant risso’s dolphin

and playful common dolphin are regularly viewed. The mega

pods of a thousand or more common and/or bottlenose

dolphin unique to southern California are also often

encountered. Sea lions, and all types of other marine life can

be seen.

For a short film to have an international impact, it must be in

a film festival that crosses borders. MANHATTAN SHORT is

that film festival. With audiences in over 300 cities spanning

six continents to view and vote on the next generation

of filmmakers from around the world, the 18th Annual

MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival will be seen in over 250

cinemas across six continents Sept. 25 – Oct. 4, 2015.

It was founded in 1998 by former Sydney-sider, Nicholas

Mason, when Mason projected 16 short films onto a screen

mounted to the side of a truck on Mulberry Street in Little

Italy (NYC). A year later, Mason moved the festival to Union

Square Park (NYC), and the films were judged by a celebrity

panel that included Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Roger

Corman, Eric Stoltz, and Laura Linney, to mention a few. But

it was events after the festival was held in Union Square Park

on September 23, 2001, just twelve days after 9/11, that

transformed this film festival into the global phenomenon it is

today.

Mason was asked by the then NYC Parks Commissioner, Henry

Stern, on September 15th, that no matter what, he must go

ahead with his film festival as planned. The park had become

a shrine and a place of healing for those who had lost loved

ones in the attacks, and was one of the global press centers

with news crews and satellite trucks covering New York City at

the time.

“It’s a city rule that all city parks must be closed by 10 PM, but

people just would not go home, they were sleeping there over

night and no one could police it,” said Nicholas Mason. “They

wanted to move the park forward, move the park on, I had a

feeling that certain city officials were scared that if another

attack was to happen, then Union Square Park was a pretty

good target for that. So, they asked me to go ahead with it

and that’s what we did, “ added Mason.

Twelve short films from ten countries screened to this

audience, with each film and filmmaker gaining press

attention on their local news channels back in their home

countries, and gaining a lot of attention on theif local news

channels back in their home countries, and gaining a lot of

attention for the festival.

“When I watched all the film entries the years after 2001,

they were more revealing to how the world was feeling at

that time to, say, watching the BBC or NBC news. That’s why

the idea of sharing these films with a larger audience came to

me,” added Mason. In 2004, Mason contacted cinemas across

the United States, asking them if they would like to screen

his film festival. That year had seven cinemas in seven states

and seven shows in one week. They also moved away from

the celebrity judges and asked the audiences to judge the

films. Audiences at each venue where allowed one vote, with

votes being sent through to NYC where Mason announced the

winner.

In 2006, Mason went to Krakow and found the closest cinema

to Auschwitz as a starting point and that year it was the first

film festival to be held simultaneously on two continents.

“At that time, I had so much feedback from audiences and

filmmakers talking about wars, and to me, Auschwitz was a

very symbolic choice for a starting point at that time. Short

filmmakers are incredibly quick at responding to current

events, in their own countries and cultures, and as a result,

the festival has become quick to respond too.”

MANHATTAN SHORT is not just one of the largest short film

festivals in the world today; it is the world’s first and only

Nicholas Mason, Founder

NeW

YORK CITY

global film festival. Over 100,000 film lovers worldwide will

be in attendance, each one ready to vote for their favorite

screened short film. If the film festival experience is about

getting great movies in front of as many people as possible,

MANHATTAN SHORT offers the ultimate platform -- with

films screened in Art House Cinemas as far afield as Sydney,

Mumbai, Moscow, Vienna, London, Buenos Aires, Rio De

Janeiro, and Kathmandu plus 150 Art House Cinemas in all

50 states of the United States. Once the votes are tallied, the

winning film will be announced from MANHATTAN SHORT

headquarters in New York City.

“Producing short films is about favors, making new friends

and new contacts, and then getting the work seen. Whether

they worked in front of or behind the camera, you owe it to

those people who worked on your film to at least try and get

that film into MANHATAN SHORT as there is no other film

festival quite like it.” Bobo Kamaninski, BAFTA Award Winning

Producer of The Banker.

Hailed in the press as “the world’s most people-powered

film festival,” MANHATTAN SHORT has given early nods to

numerous films that have gone on to win Academy Awards.

MANHATTAN SHORT is not a touring festival; rather, it is a

celebration of film that occurs simultaneously across the globe.

The top three short films selected by a global audience will

be awarded MANHATTAN SHORT’s Gold, Silver and Bronze

medals, but the true prize is in the worldwide exposure that

accelerates careers and connects great filmmakers with

the film-going public. MANHATTAN SHORT is a worldwide

phenomenon that brings people together.

DEADLINE FOR PARTICIPATION

Filmmakers and screenwriters should mark July 31st on their calendars

as this is the deadline for participation in the 18th Annual MANHATTAN

SHORT Film Festival. This year’s edition of MANHATTAN SHORT will be

seen in over 250 cinemas across six continents Sept. 25 – Oct. 4, 2015.

SCREENPLAY COMPETITION

MANHATTAN SHORT’s annual short film screenplay competition attracts

everyone from established writers to complete beginners. The focus of

this competition is to discover and promote the best short screenplays,

while also connecting great short scripts with great filmmakers. All

screenplays entered will have a synopsis, character breakdown, page

length and contact information at ManhattanShort.com’s Contact a

Screenwriter page. The MANHATTAN SHORT network promotes this

page to every filmmaker that enters the Festival.

Fusing Eastern and Western culture with a 1940’s big

band twist, Hot Mikado swings into Loyola with a sidesplitting

story. The tale features Ko-Ko, the reluctant

Lord High Executioner, Nanki-Poo, a disguised prince

fleeing his arranged marriage, and Yum-Yum, a woman

they both love. The hilarious complications that ensue

turn this satire into a hot American mix of jazz, gospel,

and vaudeville.

A MUSICAL COMEDY WITH A LOT ON ITS MIND

When introverted, 30-something computer repairman Dan finds a potential spark with

outgoing t-shirt designer Lindsay, his attempts at a relationship are thwarted by the Technicolor

world in his head. This world-premiere musical goes where no musical has gone

before, bringing to life the circus of judgmental, neurotic, ever-changing characters that

rule an ordinary man’s mind. Up Here is an ambitious, razor-sharp musical comedy about

recognizing your place in the universe —

and maybe even finding happiness.

The jukebox is synonymous with rock and roll. When the musical genre was first born

back in the late 1940s and early ‘50s, some of the earliest rock records were played on

classic jukeboxes in American burger joints and cafes across the nation.

For modern rock enthusiasts and music collectors, jukeboxes still reign supreme and are

in high demand, as they serve as nostalgic reminders of the rock genre’s purest days.

When it comes to jukebox manufacturing here in the United States, there’s only one

company that’s making modern jukeboxes in the same tradition as the originals from

the mid-20th century: The Rock-Ola Manufacturing Company.

Rock-Ola’s all-original, hand-finished, nostalgic jukeboxes are designed to look exactly

like the classic style jukeboxes one would’ve found in diners back in the ‘40s and ‘50s—

they’re assembled by hand, feature exotic woods for the cabinets and they’re built to

stand the test of time. However, Rock-Ola’s jukeboxes also boast top-of-the-line touch

screens and sound equipment, as well as the ability to play mp3 files and CDs, which

means that these jukeboxes feature the best of the past and present: the craftsmanship

and quality of mid-century jukeboxes blended with the modern convenience of a 21st

century digital sound system.

“It reminds them of the good old days of real rock and roll music,” says Glenn Streeter,

owner of Rock-Ola, about the appeal of jukeboxes. Rock-Ola’s jukeboxes feature

exteriors that are nearly identical to mid-century jukeboxes.

The cabinets, for instance, feature real chromed-metal trim and cut-glass side mirrors.

They’re made from walnut on the outside, and the front doors feature real African

Movinga Satinwood veneer.

“We produce jukebox cabinets like they were done in the 1940s,” Streeter says.

Streeter’s personal motto when it comes to manufacturing (“Quality is always in style”)

heavily influences the production of Rock-Ola’s jukeboxes, and the company does its

utmost to not skip any corners.

“We do all of our finishing in house,” says Streeter. “All of the detail work is done by

hand—even the final details on the doors are painted with tiny paintbrushes.” Rock-

Ola’s goal is to produce a jukebox that can last—mid-century jukeboxes were designed

to age gracefully, so Rock-Ola works hard to make sure that quality is always a priority.

However, while the jukeboxes themselves feature classic style, they’re outfitted with

the best in music technology. All of the models feature a powerful Peavey 2,000-watt

amplifier.

ALEX

“You

could run an auditorium with one of these jukeboxes,” Streeter adds.

The PET models GROOMER can feature either ,OWNER a mechanism that plays and hold up to 100 CDs, or they

can feature a modern touch screen and music hard drive system that’s powered by

Rock-Ola’s exclusive Qsonix software. The digital system can hold up to 13,000 CDs’

worth of music, and it can be played remotely on an iPad or mobile device, hooked up

to wi-fi and it can even download songs from other remote sources. There are also plans

to start manufacturing vinyl-playing jukeboxes in the near future, as well.

“It’s the best quality nostalgic style with the latest technology,” says Streeter about

Rock-Ola’s jukeboxes. The company’s products have popped up all around the world,

as 493 Rock-Ola E has TAHQUITZ clients in Moscow, CANYON Dubai, the WAY, Philippines and India. Rock-Ola has also

manufactured PALM SPRINGS jukeboxes for CA restaurant 92262 clients such as Fat Burger, Johnny Rockets and

Texas Roadhouse.

Rock-Ola has nearly a century’s worth of experience with jukebox manufacturing. David

Rockola originally founded Rock-Ola Manufacturing Co. in 1927 and he made jukeboxes

longer than anyone in history. Streeter, who has been making Classic jukeboxes for

over 30 years, considers Rockola to have been one of the most influential American

manufacturers of jukeboxes. “He was one of the most prolific guys in the industry,” says

Streeter. He also notes that Rockola was extremely fascinated with all aspects of the

coin-operated industry, and that aside from jukeboxes (the company made their first

jukebox in 1934), he also made parking meters, gumball, pinball and slot machines too.

“It all started as a hobby,” says Streeter about his first foray into the jukebox industry.

In 1977, Streeter built on his love for vintage technology and started the Antique

Apparatus Company in his garage, specializing in restoring and selling antique radios.

Eventually, the company began to refine its specializations, and Streeter started

restoring jukeboxes—some of the restored systems even ended up on television shows.

“One of my restorations ended up on “Cheers” and now resides in the Smithsonian

Finding parts for the jukeboxes began to become a little bit of a challenge, so he started

manufacturing nostalgic-style jukeboxes—with wooden, hand-finished exteriors—but

with all new sound systems. “I made the first successful nostalgic jukebox in the early

‘80s,” says Streeter.

In the early 1990s, Streeter had the opportunity to expand the scope of his business,

and he purchased the Rock-Ola Manufacturing Company in 1992. When Streeter

purchased Rock-Ola, he moved the entire operation in 28 semi-trucks to his new factory

in Torrance, Calif., where it still operates today.

Rock-Ola is always working to stay relevant and keep in touch with what rock and roll

enthusiasts and collectors are craving in modern jukebox technology. The company’s

latest effort involves creating special Elvis Presley-inspired jukeboxes. These “Elvis

Presley 60th Anniversary of Rock n’ Roll 1954-2014” jukeboxes come in two distinct

finishes: either a piano-black or piano-white finish with a gold-colored metal trim and

base. The jukeboxes are limited-edition items, as only 99 of each color variety were

made.

Each jukebox features a distinct, guitar-shaped magnet CD holder with an Elvis

Streeter has a true passion for jukeboxes—in his opinion, they transport listeners to

that era when rock and roll was first born. Their design is classic and timeless, he notes,

and because his jukeboxes are so well made, they can be passed down to other family

members and remain relevant. “These jukeboxes are something you can give to your

grandchildren when you’re finished with it,” he says.

to Rock-Ola Manufacturing at 2335 208th St., Torrance, CA 90501.
