Never A Dull Moment With The
Sandiford’s
Hannah & Jordan
What grandchildren need the most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance.
They give unconditional love, kindness, patience, humour, comfort, lessons in life…

The Sandiford’s are the proud grandparents of several and are very
involved in their grandchildren’s activities which include chess, music and
their various after school lessons.
Harry or “Leigh” is a retired Managing Director of Super Centre (now
Massy Stores Supermarkets) who dedicated more than 40 years of
service with Barbados Shipping and Trading (BS&T), while Myrna also
retired, spent 27 years with the Royal Bank of Canada.
The grandchildren are always excited when Myrna cooks some of their
favourite foods; macaroni pie, chicken soup and fish cakes and they seem
to particularly enjoy sharing moments together over a cup of tea with
banana bread and biscuits. “They very much like to have us over for tea
and better still to sleep over.” Exclaimed Harry, whose grandchild Leigh
not only carries his name but also has the same penchant for chocolate.
All of the children seem to excel in music, a passion that they also share
with their grandfather.
There is definitely never a dull moment with the Sandiford’s. “We can recall
taking them on a cruise when we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary.”
Myrna said with a laugh. “We were surprised to discover that our then,
six year old granddaughter was ordering hot chocolate and turkey
sandwiches almost every day through room service…I mean, how did she
know about room service, far less know who to call?” Myrna continued.
The Sandiford’s are very supportive of their grandchildren and are more
than happy to brag about their accomplishments. The first grandchild
Jordan age 14 is very artistic and loves to sketch, while Hannah age 11,
loves to swim. They are both currently at the Codrington School.
Abigail 16, is a student of Combermere School and already has Grade 1
and 2 passes in the Caribbean Examinations (CXC’s) already under her
belt. She studies the violin and recently received a distinction at Grade 7 in
piano. She plays in the Barbados Youth Orchestra and leaves very soon for
Washington to participate in the Global Youth Leaders Conference (GYLC).
Paul 11, is a former pupil of the George Lamming Primary, having just
passed for the Combermere School in the recent Barbados Secondary
School Entrance Examination (Common Entrance). He is also studying
the guitar and the piano.
Kyle 12, is a student of Harrison College where he plays violin in the
school’s orchestra as well as in the Barbados Youth Orchestra. He has
a keen interest in chess and is the current Barbados under 14 and under
16 National Chess Champion. He received a bronze medal in the recently
hosted Under 14 CARIFTA Chess Tournament and has represented
Barbados in many chess tournaments throughout the Caribbean.
Leigh 9, is a student at Providence Elementary School. He too has a keen
interest in chess and music and plays the cello and piano. He recently
received distinctions in both piano, Grade 2 and cello Grade 1. Much like
his older brother Leigh, he has represented Barbados at several regional
chess tournaments and is the current CARIFTA under 12 Chess Champion.
He also holds the title of the Under 10 National Chess Champion. He
recently represented Barbados in the Pan-American Chess Tournament
in Cali, Colombia in June.
Tara 8, joins her brother at Providence and has just won the girls Under
8 chess championship at the CARIFTA games. At present, she is being
tutored in cello, piano and violin and has the spirit and spunk to challenge
all of her siblings and cousins.
“There is definitely never a dull moment with our grandchildren and you
are always guaranteed to have good laugh which is the best medicine for
our golden years.” The Sandiford’s echoed.
