The Vygon range ofperipherally insertedcatheters providessafe and reliablevascular access. They are intended for use in patients whorequire mid to long-term IV therapy, andmay be used to administer fluids, antibiotics, chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, painmanagement drugs, and for blood sampling.Vygon specialises in vascular access devicesmade from biostable polyurethane, whichoffers enhanced mechanical and biochemicalstability throughout treatment. Catheters madefrom polyurethane have the advantage ofproviding extra stiffness, which aids insertion, and then become soft and pliable at bodytemperature.Outpatient ParenteralAntimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) 1OPAT services allow patients who are medically stable, and whose only reason foradmission is the requirement for IV antibiotic therapy, to be treated in an outpatientsetting. The key objective of an OPAT service is to manage patients with infectionssafely and effectively as outpatients, ensuring their treatment is optimised, appropriately delivered and supervised, and that the risks are minimised.Patient benefits:3 Improved patient satisfaction3 Decreased hospital acquired infections, including Clostridium difficile3 Reduced length of stay in hospital/admission avoidance3 Prevents social/psychological problems associated with admission3 Allows choice of therapy to suit individual needs3 Delivery of care in greater comfort and privacy3 More rapid return to normality, in terms of work and education.Hospital/clinician benefits:3 Reduced inpatient stay, easing bed pressure and allowing bed reductionor reconfiguration3 Improved efficiency of resource use, including impact on waiting times3 Admission avoidance for some infections3 Reduced hospital staff workload3 Consistent specialist infection input into patient care3 Resource for early discharge of patients with healthcare associatedinfections.Delivery of an OPAT service:1. Delivery of IV therapy in the home by the patient or relative2. By a healthcare professional3. In a clinic (outpatient department)4. In an intermediate care setting (e.g. GP surgery).Vygon has been working in partnership with the British Society forAntimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) to develop an OPAT business casemodelling toolkit which can help you to introduce an OPAT servicein your hospital or Trust. This vital resource is now available to you,and your local Vygon representative can work w ith you to utilise this.Contact us on 01793 748830 for further informat ion. There are a number of examples of where and when anOPAT service can be used, including:• Skin and soft tissue infections• Bone and joint infections• Device related infections• Endocarditis• Central nervous system infections• Bacteraemia• Wound infections• Pneumonia• Pyelonephritis• Intra-adominal.OPAT services alreadyin existence haverepeatedly demonstratedthat they arecost-effective andprovide significant costsavings in the form ofbed days.Vygon (UK) Ltd 3

Less than30 daysFordurationof therapyLeaderflexThe Leaderflex family of 22G midline catheters offerssuperior insertion and indwelling characteristics.“We use Leaderflex for patients who require up to four weeks intravenousantibiotic therapy, either within the hospital or their home. It is intended that all of our patientsbeing discharged into the community with intravenous antibiotics have a Leaderflex inserted. The mainbenefit of Leaderflex insertion is quality of patient care and experience of intravenous therapy – receivingmedication on time and not being constantly cannulated. The benefits to the clinicians are the reassuranceof constant peripheral access and ease of use. For us, Leaderflex is easy to insert and the care andmaintenance of the line is simple. We use Leaderflex for patients in our orthopaedic ward.CNS Educator Intravenous Therapy, Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation TrustSeldinger insertion techniqueAllows access to smaller palpable/fragilevessels.“Lifecath MidlineLifecath Midline is intended for use in patients whorequire mid-long term IV therapy.“Patients identified as needing non-irritant/non-vesicant intermediate tolong-term intravenous antibiotic therapy benefit from the early placementof a Midline. The insertion of a Midline facilitates early discharge for continued antibiotic therapy inthe community, as well as reducing the number of patient bed days and the risk of the patient acquiringa healthcare associated infection. A Midline also reduced the number of missed antibiotic doses resultingfrom unreliable intravenous access, which could result in treatment delays.Midlines inserted using ultrasound and a micro-introducer technique also provide reliable access forpatients who are difficult to cannulate, preventing delayed or missed treatment doses and the need for theinsertion of the an acute central line or femoral line. The benefit to the patient is that a Midline avoids repeated painful cannulation attempts and the placementof a Midline in the upper arm is far more comfortable.Intravenous Nurse Specialist, East Surrey Hospital“New Halkey RobertsStyle ClampIntegral extension with wingPermits secure catheter fixation, reducingthe risk of mechanical phlebitis.Depth marked catheterWith centimetre and numerical markings to aidmeasurement, you don’t need to count to cut!Proven to stay in for up to 296days 2Reduces the number of missed antibiotic doses, resulting in antibiotics being delivered on timeevery time, enhancing patient experience.Flexible guidewireReduces risk of vein trauma.Lifecath Midline e-Learning programme coming soon!• Choice of introducer methodMSTPeelable cannula• Supplied with Grip-LokFlexible and low-profile for maximumpatient comfort.• Supplied with Bionector7 day/360 accesses needle-free devices.4Vygon (UK) LtdVygon (UK) Ltd 5

Micro Seldinger KitThe Micro Seldinger Technique (MST) insertion kit offersincreased accuracy and can provide a reduction inunsuccessful PICC placement attempts of 64%.“We use Vygon’s PICCs and Midlines with the Micro Seldinger Techniqueacross our Trust. We use our own selection criteria to determine which type of vascular accessdevice is most suitable and the lines are used to administer long-term IV antibiotics, chemotherapy, TPN,blood products, fluids and for blood sampling.“The MST kit is easy to use and allows us to access veins using Ultrasound Guidance (USG) with easewhen palpable venous access is proving difficult. High arm placement is also possible using USG and theMST kit providing increased patient comfort and reduces the risk of accidental removal of the line.Lead Practitioner – Parenteral Therapies, Royal Derby HospitalNitinol guidewireProvides accurate atraumaticpositioning and eliminates anyrisk of kinking.Grip-Lok Grip-Lok is a flexible low-profile PICC and Midlinecatheter securement device designed for maximumpatient comfort.“We use Grip-Lok for the fixation of PICCs - Midline and Leaderflexcatheters. We like using Grip-Lok because it lies flat against the patient’s skin and it adheres wellto both the skin and the catheter. It provides good securement to all the products we use and as it liesflat there is very little chance of it being knocked or of the catheter becoming dislodged. We use it incombination with a semi-permeable dressing which together provides good securement. We find thatalternative devices contain plastic, which we often find have a build up of condensation, which in turn maycause infection. The plastic in these other devices is also very hard and for patient’s with fragile skin thiscan be a problem and cause pressure areas. We find that Grip-Lok doesn’t have these disadvantageswhich is why we continue to use it.“Vascular Access Lead Nurse, Imperial College Healthcare NHS TrustPre-cut foam insertEnsures correct catheter positioning andsecurement.Unique designEasy to apply and adjust with gloved hands.Velcro coverEasy to remove and easyto re-apply.Echogenic tipped safety needleAllows easy access to veins providing improvedvisibility for ultrasound.Locking collar betweensheath and dilatorEliminates sheath and dilator separationduring insertion.Specialist seven day hypoallergenicadhesiveHolds Grip-Lok firmly in position, reducing the risk ofcatheter dislodgement and migration.Gentle on the skin reducing the risk of skin irritation.Lies flat against patient’s skinReducing the chance of the catheterbecoming dislodged.8Vygon (UK) LtdVygon (UK) Ltd 9
