Production has declined for flowers. It is observed that there is no change in productivity during 2007-08 aswell as 2011-12 for fruits, spices as well as flowers. Data needs crosschecking as productivity cannot remain constant. Major focus was on area expansion without any intervention on PHMand marketing. Tissue culture banana plantlets costing Rs.12.50 per plant were beingsupplied to SC / ST farmers, by Tamil Nadu Horticultural ProducerCooperative Enterprises Ltd (TANHOPE), free of cost. The amount is,however, booked under area expansion component. Free supply of planting material has induced many farmers to take upcultivation of horticulture crops without enquiring about the variety andits quality. Free distribution of MI system and other horticulture inputs has putsubstantial burden on the financial resources as well as the Extensionmachinery.JIT called on Shri P. Shankar, District Collector and Chairman, District<strong>Mission</strong> Committee (DMC) on 11 th <strong>February</strong>, <strong>2013</strong> and apprised him aboutthe observations of JIT.13
