The total geographical area of the district is 5,92,018 hectares andthe net sown area is 1, 74,695 hactares which constitutes 40% of the totalgeographical area of the district. The area under horticulture crops is 31700hactares which occupies 80% of the net sown area.Vellore has a tropical climate suitable for tropical fruits, Vegetablesand flowers. The district accounts for 5% of area coverage and 4.7% ofproduction of horticulture in the state. There has been increase in the areaunder these crops during the last couple of years .Of this more than 60% ofthe area are rainfed and the balance area are catered through irrigationsources viz wells, canals and tanks. There is absence of surface waterirrigation in the district. Efforts are initiated by the department of horticulture toincrease the area under horticulture crops under rainfed as well as by way ofirrigation through drip system.6
