dramaspaces6 18/8/05 4:25 PM Page 39Image as stimulusI have referred a lot to tableaux and freeze frames.These techniques are used to create a story from animage – i.e. using a picture as a stimulus for drama.Again, as with the objects, try not to use pictures thatpeople are overly familiar with.Try and choose pictures that are suggestive of a person or situation.The Using a Picture, Tell a Story workshop outlined in Section 3 and 4 is a good example of how picturesmay be used as a stimulus for drama.Word as stimulusChoose a word.Write it in the middle of a sheet of paper and allow the group to write or draw anythingthat comes into their head in reaction to that word.Belonging and Difference• In two groups, brainstorm the words Belonging and Difference.• The group is asked to sit down as I read ‘Something Else’, a children’s book by Chris Riddell andKatherine Cave. It is a story relating to the themes of belonging and difference.The group is asked toidentify the three key actions of the story. In this case it broke down as:1. He was rejected2. He rejected3. He accepted• Using their brainstorm sheets, they are asked to tell/write a story using those three key actions.39
