Chaplain's CornerBy Father Jim LaCasse, S.J.jlacasse@garces.orgThe new school is well started. The yearMasses centered on our theme for thisyear, which is, Courage of Faith. Thesewere followed by the Mass of the HolySpirit with Bishop Ochoa as the principalcelebrant. His message to the studentswas the need to work hard at building theKingdom of God.Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament wasscheduled for the last week of September.All students had the opportunity, throughtheir respective Theology classes, to participatein this very ancient exercise oftheir faith.As we look forward in October, therewill be two All School Masses, the firston October 10, and the second in associationwith our symposium on this year’stheme, Courage of Faith, on October24. All parents are invited to join usfor both of these liturgies.Symposium Mass – Our Symposiumon “Courage of Faith” will concludewith a student body mass at 12:00 p.mon Wednesday, October 24. CampusMinistry will be planning the Mass andour new Praise Band will provide themusic for our closing liturgy. Parents areinvited to join us!!The Junior class will have a special“Stepping Up Mass” in the St. DominicChapel on Thursday, November 1. Alljuniors will receive Garces pins and makea pledge to step up to the responsibilitiesof being upper classmen and role modelsfor our younger students. Also, anyjunior that has purchased a class ring willhave the opportunity to have his/her ringblessed at the end of the liturgy. ParentClub will host a reception for the juniorsimmediately after the Mass. All parentsof junior students are invited to join us forthis special Mass.Canned Food DriveThe Canned Food Drive will begin onNovember 1 and run through November16. Canned food will be collected on“White Days” and given to St. Vincentde Paul to distribute to the needy in ourcommunity. We will be accepting anynon-perishable items such as cannedfood, pasta, rice, beans, etc. Students canbring these items to their second periodclass. Any items our families donate willbe distributed to needy families by St.Vincent de Paul.By Susan RizoDirector of Campus Ministrysrizo@garces.orgSophomore RetreatAll sophomores will be attending theirclass retreat on Tuesday, November 20.All sophomores will be boarding busses at7:00 a.m. for St. Anthony’s Retreat Centerin Three Rivers. The theme for the retreatis “Overcoming Obstacles and BuildingBridges.” This will be a wonderful day forthe students to get away from the stress ofschool and focus on their relationship withGod and others. Information will be cominghome to parents at the end of October.Kairos RetreatKairos is a new retreat experience thatis being offered to our junior and seniorstudents this year. The two retreats areNovember 6-9, 2012 and April 9-12, 2013.The cost of the retreat $225.00, whichincludes bus transportation and overnightaccommodations for the 3 nights and fourdays retreat. This is a life changing retreatso if your student is interested in attending,please have them sign up for the Novemberretreat right away and see Mrs. Rizo secondsemester for the April retreat.Senior RetreatThe senior retreat is January 16- 18, 2013,at the new St. Teresita Youth ConferenceCenter in Three Rivers. The theme of theretreat is, “The Journey Continues . . . “ andwill focus on the students deepening theirrelationship with God as they continue theirjourney into their adult years. The CSU filing period isOct.1st through Nov. 30th. The UC filingperiod is Nov.1st through Nov. 30th. Theapplication deadline for both the UC's andCSU's is November 30, 2012. The topic for Septemberwas Adapting and the topic for October andNovember will be Mistreatment/Bullying.ALL SCHOOL TESTINGOctober 17, 2012 is All School Testingfrom 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. All freshmenstudents will take the ReadiStep andall sophomore and junior students willtake the PSAT. Students will begin testingpromptly at 8:00 a.m. Please remind yourstudents to get a good night's sleep and eatbreakfast prior to the test. We are also askingstudents to bring their student ID andtwo #2 pencils to the test. Parents are remindedto pick their students up @ 11:30a.m. on that day. Seniors do not test on thisday and are excused from school.NETCLASSROOMGarces’ online grade reporting system (NetClassroom) is available to parents. This isa tremendous tool to keep parents and familiesinformed regarding academic progressin each of your student’s classes. If youdo not have a password to Net Classroom,please contact Mr. Doug Dill at 327-3578ext. 113.NAVIANCENaviance is another great program thatprovides resources to all Garces studentsfor college searches, college scholarships,recommendation requests, and other vitalsteps in the college application and decisionprocess. Freshmen students were registeredfor this program with the assistanceof Mrs. Poochigian. All freshmen parentswere mailed their Family Connection passwordsand instructions for the registrationprocess. Students/Parents, if you do not rememberhow to access your account, pleasecontact your counselor ASAP.PERSONAL COUNSELINGAll personal counseling sessions conductedby the Garces Memorial Counseling Departmentare, by mandate, fully confidentialand therefore do not require parental notification.It is the goal of the CounselingDepartment to assist students with their academic,social and emotional developmentas they progress through their high schoolyears and to provide the broadest possiblesupport.
