Senior parents, please beon the lookout for your College AdvisingEmail. The time and date will be sent asan attachment in your email. If you do notreceive an email from your counselor by<strong>November</strong> 15th, please call or email Mrs.Limi (dlimi@garces.org) or Mrs. Sakowski(dsakowski@garces.org) to arrange for acollege application advising session.Online applications for the CSU/UC campusesbegin <strong>October</strong> 1, <strong>2012</strong>, for the fall2013 school year. The CSU filing period isOct.1st through Nov. 30th. The UC filingperiod is Nov.1st through Nov. 30th. Theapplication deadline for both the UC's andCSU's is <strong>November</strong> 30, <strong>2012</strong>. Additionalinformation regarding application deadlinesis available at www.csumentor.eduand www.universityofcalifornia.edu.The majority of colleges and universitiesrequire students to submit either ACT and/or SAT scores for admission to their school.The following tests are being offered at<strong>Garces</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> during the month of<strong>October</strong>: Oct. 6th- SAT; Oct. 27th - ACT.The registration deadline for the <strong>November</strong>3rd SAT (not offered at <strong>Garces</strong>) is <strong>October</strong>4th. The registration deadline for the Dec.1st SAT is Nov. 8th. The registration deadlinefor the Dec. 8th-ACT is Nov.1st. Collegeentrance exams must be completed byDecember of the senior year for fall 2013admission. For exceptions to this deadline,please check your individual campuses andadmission deadlines. For additional testdates and registration deadlines, pleasevisit www.collegeboard.com or the Counselingwebsite @www.garces.org.The CSU/UC and Private Colleges andUniversities Application Workshops willbe held <strong>October</strong> 23rd and <strong>October</strong> 30thduring collaboration in Room 31. This is asmall group opportunity to work with yourcounselors on completing the online applicationfor admission into the Universityof California and Cal State University systems,and the online Common Applicationfor private universities.The Free Application for Federal StudentAid (FAFSA) and the application for theCal Grant will be available online January1, 2013. The filing period is January1, 2013 through March 2, 2013. The CalGrant GPA Verification Form must besigned by your counselor prior to March2, 2013. Please contactyour child's counselor if you have anyquestions.Link Crew has begun their visits with thefreshmen class. The topic for Septemberwas Adapting and the topic for <strong>October</strong> and<strong>November</strong> will be Mistreatment/Bullying.ALL SCHOOL TESTING<strong>October</strong> 17, <strong>2012</strong> is All <strong>School</strong> Testingfrom 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. All freshmenstudents will take the ReadiStep andall sophomore and junior students willtake the PSAT. Students will begin testingpromptly at 8:00 a.m. Please remind yourstudents to get a good night's sleep and eatbreakfast prior to the test. We are also askingstudents to bring their student ID andtwo #2 pencils to the test. Parents are remindedto pick their students up @ 11:30a.m. on that day. Seniors do not test on thisday and are excused from school.NETCLASSROOM<strong>Garces</strong>’ online grade reporting system (NetClassroom) is available to parents. This isa tremendous tool to keep parents and familiesinformed regarding academic progressin each of your student’s classes. If youdo not have a password to Net Classroom,please contact Mr. Doug Dill at 327-3578ext. 113.NAVIANCENaviance is another great program thatprovides resources to all <strong>Garces</strong> studentsfor college searches, college scholarships,recommendation requests, and other vitalsteps in the college application and decisionprocess. Freshmen students were registeredfor this program with the assistanceof Mrs. Poochigian. All freshmen parentswere mailed their Family Connection passwordsand instructions for the registrationprocess. Students/Parents, if you do not rememberhow to access your account, pleasecontact your counselor ASAP.PERSONAL COUNSELINGAll personal counseling sessions conductedby the <strong>Garces</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> Counseling Departmentare, by mandate, fully confidentialand therefore do not require parental notification.It is the goal of the CounselingDepartment to assist students with their academic,social and emotional developmentas they progress through their high schoolyears and to provide the broadest possiblesupport.
