A Message From the PresidentDear Friends,As our 60th Anniversary year draws to a close, I reflect back on the history of our school. FromSeptember 10, 1947, when Garces Memorial High School first opened its doors to 150 apprehensive butenthusiastic students, to the present day, we have grown into the premier high school in Bakersfield. Wehave witnessed many physical changes to our campus over the years. We have watched our curricularand extra-curricular programs expand. We have welcomed students and families from diverse ethnic,socio-economic, and religious backgrounds to experience this rich tradition. With this growth, with thischange, there has been and will always be one constant. We were, are, and will continue to be inspiredand directed by the doctrines and traditions of our Catholic faith. The past four years have brought many positive changes and additions to our school. Our Spiritual Retreat, Campus Ministry, andChristian Life Community programs, coupled with our four-year Theology curriculum, encourage and direct our students to continue togrow as People of Faith, as Children of God. The adoption of a block class period schedule, with individual classes meeting every otherday for 85 minutes of instruction, evaluation, and assessment, has enhanced and improved learning and is better preparing our studentsfor the rigors and challenges of the collegiate experience. Expanded Honors and Advanced Placement offerings continue to challengeour students to improve their intellectual growth. Our ever-increasing and always improving extra-curricular and athletic programsshowcase and highlight the many talents of our students and serve as a great sense of pride and accomplishment in the community. These past three years have brought many physical improvements to our school. The formation of a Chapel and Religious Center at theheart of the campus is currently under way. A science wing which will house biology, chemistry, and health classes will be completedthis summer. Improvements have been made to Monsignor Leddy Hall, our cafeteria, to allow it to house drama and fine artsproductions. The seating on both the home and visitor sides of Sam Tobias Field have been modernized. A beautiful athletic andtraining facility has been built to serve members of every sport, team, and physical education class. New scoreboards have beeninstalled; classrooms and restrooms have been renovated; landscape and design have been improved. All of these and the many otherunnamed projects have been made possible because of the generosity and concern of members of our community.Garces Memorial High School is more than just spiritual, academic, and extra-curricular programs. This institution is more than thebuildings and grounds that house our students. Our greatest assets, our most valued treasures, are the women and men who form theGarces Memorial community. Our students, present and future, along with you alumni, parents, former parents, and supportivecommunity members create a legacy for our school which is rich and deep. My heartfelt appreciation goes to each and every one of youfor your prayers and support. Student LifeHave you driven by the Garces Memorial marquee on the corner of Union and Columbus and read that this is “The Year of Compassion” andwondered why? The answer can be found in the Garces Memorial Mission Statement:“Garces Memorial High School is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high school. Our school educates youth to fulfill the mission of Christ be developing students spiritually, intellectually, and socially. Our mission calls us to instill in every member of the Garcesmemorial community respect, integrity, compassion, and courage of faith.”In order to bring that message to the students in a meaningful way, Garces Memorial began an annual student symposium three years agofocused around the four core values of respect, integrity, compassion, and courage of faith. Each year brings its owntheme. Along with the symposium, the annual theme is incorporated into Theology Department curriculum to reinforce our core values. The first symposium’s theme was Respectand was held in 2006. The students listenedto a motivational guest speaker discuss theimportance of respecting themselves andothers.Last year’s symposium’s theme wasIntegrity. The guest speaker was veryentertaining for the students and engagedthe students in a variety of “cool” activities. This year’s symposium’s theme wascompassion and students discoveredwhat compassion truly means - “neverletting anyone be by themselves or hurtalone.”Sam Tobias FieldAfter the 2005 football season, the home sideseating was replaced with the intention ofeventually replacing the visitors side. This year,in large thanks to the generosity of theMcDermott Family, the visitor’s side seating ofSam Tobias Field was demolished and will havenew seating for the upcoming football season.Cerro Science BuildingThe new Cerro Science Building is well underway and scheduled to be open for classes for the2008-2009 school year. The new building willallow for biology, chemistry, and health classes.Garces Memorial plans to hold a reception in theCerro Science Building this fall to allow alumniand supporters to tour the new classrooms.Page 4

Student ProfileTom Hollenbeck2007-2008 ASB PresidentHis advice to incoming freshmen is to “try everything, know yourlimits, but do it all”. He urges students to get more involved inorder to get the most out of their Garces Memorial experience. Thehighlights of his high school experience have been football, ASB,and being a member of the “Hurricane” – a big group of studentswho attend the basketball games dressed in green and white andexpress their spirit for Garces Memorial loudly and proudly.Tom Hollenbeck, ASB President, asked his predecessor for some advice. Hewas told to be unique and to do something different to set himself apart from past ASBPresidents. It didn’t take Tom long to think of something. Every afternoon, Tom startsthe announcements off with a “Fun Fact” and they range from Garces Memorial trivia to“did you know?” facts. The student body, faculty, and staff all enjoy Tom’s “facts” andwonder what he’ll come up with each day. When asked why Tom chose Garces Memorial, there was no hesitation in his response. He said “family”. Garces Memorial represented a lifestyle to him where everyone knowseach other and gets along. Although Tom’s parents did not attend Garces Memorial, hisgrandmother (Joanne Montoya ’58) and his cousins (Kevin Inman ‘07 and Jeff Inman ‘06)did. It was an easy choice to become a Ram. Tom knows the friends that he has made atGarces Memorial will be his friends for life.Tom said there is no other school like Garces Memorial inBakersfield. Everyone likes the students at Garces Memorial andother high school students all have “Garces” friends. Tom feels oneof the most important aspects is that Garces Memorial buildscharacter for a lot of kids and helps teach them to make smartdecisions, be responsible and respectful of others. GarcesMemorial is known for its rigorous college preparatory curriculumand as a result Tom is ready. He is especially grateful to Mr.Jamison for teaching him how to take better notes in class and to organize his thoughts so that he works smarter. The Catholic part of his education has not gone unnoticed. He likes the way each day starts and ends with a prayer and he haslearned a lot in his Theology classes. He’s become more respectful of other religions and has a greater understanding of theCatholic religion and is able to better explain to others what it means to be Catholic. His future plans are to graduate from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo with a degree in architecture and attend all his high schoolreunions so he can stay in touch with all the friends he has made here.Page 5

Alumni NewsGarces Memorial Celebrates 60 years at the Holy BowlGarces Memorial High School opened its doors on September 10, 1947, as a co-educational, inter-parochial high school with anenrollment of 150 students. Garces Memorial has seen a lot of changes through the years. In the 1950’s, our campus grew to 400 studentsand today our campus consists of over 700 students. Our campus has changed and will continue to do so with the addition of the CerroScience Building and the Icardo Chapel and Religious Center for the 2008-2009 school year.Over the past 60 years, we have created numerous Garces Memorial traditions – Freshman Alley, Sophomore Benches, Junior Curb, andSenior Hill; Fall BBQ; GALA; The Holy Bowl; Monsignor Leddy Golf Tournament; Powder Puff Football; Campus Ministry; Bishop’sAward; Garces Award; Man of the Year; and many more that our alumni hold dearly. In honor of our 60 year anniversary, we are addingone more tradition – Hall of Honor.Garces Memorial also has a storied tradition of outstanding academic and athletic achievements. Last year’s graduating class had 100%of its students attending college. Garces Memorial graduates have gone on to be judges, authors, doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, athletes, community leaders, and more importantly, loyal alumni with many sending their children and grandchildren to GarcesMemorial. We have one of the most successful athletic programs in the CIF Central Section with 98 Valley Championship teams anddozens of individual championships in tennis, swimming, diving, track, cross country, and golf.In the fall, we began celebrating our 60 year anniversary at the Holy Bowl by recognizing alumni at the game by bringing them downonto Sam Tobias Field. We will cap off our 60th anniversary on June14th with a Summer Bash for all our alumni and friends. It’san opportunity to visit with old friends and celebrate what being a Garces Memorial Ram is all about – a tradition of excellence. Ram ReunionsClass of 1957 Celebrates 50 Years!By Helen HallerMary Clark Morlenad & Carl MorelandFront row: Barbara (Lendacky) Logan, Connie Kelly, Claudia (Antongiovanni) Heinle, Helen (Reischman) Haller, Judy(Antongiovanni) Walsh, Judy (Johnson) Olson; Back row: Suzanna (Day) Elfsten, Pat (Wattenbarger) Blair, Judie (Nelson)Schwebel, Janet (Hubbard) Watson, Marcia (Worden) Trammel, Janice Rush, Yvonne (Caire) Head, Jane (Douds)Gaspardone, Louise (Harrison) Kadrovach, Diane (Phoenix) Dougherty, Sylvia (Alexander) Wilson, Jeanne (Sara) BurrellButch Sandrini, Barbara & Al SandriniThe Class of ’57 celebrated their 50th reunion last August with a fun-filled weekend in Cambria. The 66 attendees began arriving on Friday afternoon and unexpectedly encountered one another in storesand restaurants all over town and on the garden paths of the Cambria Pines Lodge, where most of themwere staying. The Friday night delicious tri-tip barbeque was prepared and served by Jimmy and Connie Murphy withhelp from Brian and Candy Kelly. It was held at the American Legion Hall and class membersreminisced about old times well into the night. The Lodge breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday provided another opportunity for classmates to relaxand catch up with one another. As friends came into the breakfast room, more and more tables werepushed together and there was much laughter shared over multiple cups of coffee. On Saturday afternoon, Dianne (Phoenix) and Morgan Dougherty hosted an open house at their home inCambria. It was a beautiful sunny day so everyone gathered on their deck and enjoyed the fresh oceanair. We all heard some great stories about Brother Marcus, Sister Ambrosia and Sister Laurentia, toname only three. Of course Gene Bonas once again shared his story of walking into a pole while doinghand signals at girls in the next building and seeing Sister Lourdina wagging her finger at him while shelaughed hysterically as he picked himself up off the ground. It was silly stories like that whichentertained attendees all weekend and there was plenty of time to share them.On Saturday night there was a formal dinner at the Cavalier Restaurant. The highlight of this eveningwas a “Then and Now” power point presentation which Al Marchetti had prepared with pictures fromthe yearbook as well as ones which had been submitted by classmates. Al Sandrini entertained everyonewith his narration of the presentation using a laser pointer (until wife Barbara took it away from him.)Table decorations for the dinner were made of LP and 45 records arranged on a base and decorated withgreen and white pompoms. The record labels listed songs and artists which had been popular in the ‘50sand which provoked more memories of dances and other good times. The decorations were the creativework of Yvonne (Caire) Head.Reunion attendees left feeling 50 years younger after sharing good times and funny memories. We weretransported back to our teenage years and enjoyed sharing common experiences. Since the reunion, those who have e-mail have been able to continue to renew old friendships and share experiences.Brian & Connie KellyLeo & Jeanne SchamblinGene & Robbie Bonas &Louise KadrovachPage 28

Development NewsDevelopment CommitteeUnder the leadership of school board member, Marcie (Antongiovanni)Soper ‘85, Garces Memorial has established a committee to review,re-evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the school’s fund raising efforts. The primary role of the committee is to develop a comprehensivedevelopment plan to utilize for enhancing our current development strategies, and designing a plan for future funding. The Development Department of GarcesMemorial generates nearly $800,000 per year in order to keep tuition affordable forfamilies in Kern County. Currently 40% of the tuition underwriting is raised throughthe Annual Fund Drive. With the assistance and dedication of “Ram Family and Friend”volunteers, the remaining funds are generated through three special events, the Fall BBQ,Gala and the Monsignor Leddy Golf Classic.Marcie (Antongiovanni) Soper ‘85Development Committee membersMarcie (Antongiovanni) Soper ’85, ChairwomanStaff RepresentativesRobert Anspach ‘54 John L. We want toencourage people to visit the campus and see first hand the improvements at the school. This will allowGarces supporters to see how their financial support makes a difference in the quality of the educationGarces Memorial students receive and strengthen their sense of pride and ownership. To accomplish these goals, fund raising efforts willconcentrate on the Annual Fund Drive. Planning isunderway for a more expansive fund raising approach. With Garces Memorial celebrating its 60th year, theinfrastructure is showing its age and capital improvementsare becoming necessary. Marcie Soper states, “we feel itis time to launch into a more comprehensive advancementapproach, to include funding for new facilities and theimprovement of existing structures. Our students deservea learning environment where they can excel spiritually, academically, and socially. This can only be accomplishedthrough a community-wide effort.” We look forward to therealization of these goals and dreams for the future.Page 34

Chapel Progress“At the very heart of the Garces Memorial campus will be the Icardo Chapel because the verycenter of who we are and what we stand for is our Catholic faith.”- John L. Fanucchi ‘68PresidentThe majority of the fundings for thisextensive remodel has been providedthrough the generosity of the Jimmieand Marjorie Icardo Trust and theSalvucci Family. You can see from the renderings onthese pages that one of the beautifulfeatures of the Icardo Chapel andReligious Center will be the stainedglass windows. We have decided to provide, to thosewho are interested, an opportunity toleave a legacy at Garces Memorialthrough the donation of a stained glasswindow. If you are interested, pleasecontact: President John L. Fanucchi at(661) 327-2578 ext. 116.Above is the view of the north interior of the chapel. To the right is the view of the south interior withthe doors closed. In lieu of pews, the chapel will befurnished with chairs. By usingchairs, it allows for Garces Memorialto reconfigure the seating toaccomodate both small and largegatherings inside the chapel. Thechairs will also allow for students toattend Mass seated in a semi-circle,which allows them to be closer tothe altar and have a more meaningfulexperience.Page 37

A Message from the PrincipalDear Alumni of Garces Memorial High School:As I have mentioned so many times before, it’s been wonderful returning to GarcesMemorial and kind of picking up where I left off. Many of you I remember frommy earlier years of teaching, the 70’s to be exact. Many of you I remember fromjust growing up here and my parents knowing yours. Well, although it’s beenalmost 30 years since I left, it has been a joy coming back to Garces Memorial andrenewing “old friendships.”You know, my Dad would often point to a water color hanging on his living roomwall that said, “ the road to a friend’s home is NEVER long.” He would often pointthat out to us if we hadn’t come to visit him for awhile. I see Garces Memorial’sassociation and relationship with you, our alumni, very similar to the water color painting. I hope that you ALLbelieve that the road to Garces ought never to be very long. With our new Director of Marketing and AlumniRelations and the growth of our Development Office, I pray that ALL of you, our alumni, take time to come andvisit us and become a very integral part of the Garces Memorial community. Many of you have continued to be very supportive of us and we have certainly appreciated it. In fact, a greatnumber of you have generously given to Garces Memorial and this is evidenced in the new construction that’staking place. We are proud to be able to move into our new state-of-the-art Cerro Science Building in August. Wewill also enjoy the remodeling of the All Purpose Building into a beautifully decorated chapel. Senior Hill willremain, but with the demolition of the old brother’s residence, we will have a landscaped quad. And if you haven’tseen the football stadium, it’s beautiful! Our new field house/weight room is another showcase and has becomeextremely useful for ALL of our athletes - men and women. All of these projects have become a reality due to thegenerous support of you, our alumni. Thank you so very much for your commitment to Garces Memorial. And for those of you who haven’t been around? Please come by and see us, we’d love to see you! It is my hopethat by the time school opens in August that I can attend an Alumni Association’s dinner and meet and greet all ofyou. Again, the success of Garces Memorial for another 60 years is directly linked to your support.Thank you All for your commitment and continued support of our Garces Memorial High School - a Catholicschool fulfilling the Mission of Christ.V.
