Your studentscontinue to perform exceptionally well intheir academics and lead by example intheir many and varied community serviceprojects. On behalf of Garces, I want tocontinue to assure you that we will continueto work to provide you, the parents, notonly the very best Catholic education foryour sons and daughters, but the finestoverall education that any school, private orpublic, can offer in both a safe and caringenvironment.Put your hands up in the air!Cause we’re the best around, and we show it!Yeah, yeah, you know it!I have often been accused of being acheerleader for Garces, and how better torecognize the spirit and very vocal supportshown by all our students and our parentsand fans at all our many extracurricularevents, both at home and away. In lookingup in both the home and visitor’s stands andlistening to the crowds at San Luis Obispoand even at that other school in downtownBakersfield who claims to also have anoutstanding football team, it was hard to tellwho were the visitors and who was the hometeam. However, Sam Tobias Field has notstopped rocking and all those lucky enoughto be present will long remember the StudentDanger Zone who help bring down the houseat each contest, including this year’s HolyBowl pep rally and games. As you’ve heardme say before it is your positive involvementand participation that continues to causewell deserved envy among every school weparticipate against. Myka Peck, Bill Potterand Lela Steiber and our coaches and manyvolunteers have all worked especially hardbehind the scenes to help make it happen andthey deserve our show of thanks for a jobdone “best”. As I like to remind them, eachcoach and volunteer has earned significanthours off purgatory for their commitment.I was taught as a child at home and alsoby the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sistersin grammar school that “A family thatprays together stays together”. To furtherpromote our overall school spirituality andspirit, the Garces community will meet inthe quad to open each “White” school daywith prayer, announcements and promotionof school spirit. At this time we will alsorecognize and share our many studentaccomplishments as they occur throughoutthe year. Academic NewsBy Mike SusankAssistant Principal for Academic Affairsmsusank@garces.orgWe are off to a great start. Here is someacademic information that may help youassist your student.Student Grades/AssignmentsGarces is going GREEN with report cards. In order to get information to parentsas quickly as possible, both progressreports and quarter report cards are beingposted on-line through NetClassroom. The first of these progress reports wasposted on September 26th. We will notbe mailing these reports home except forthe Semester Report card which will beposted on-line AND sent home in the mail. However, you do not need to wait untilgrades are posted. NetClassroom, Garces’online grade update system, is a greattool for parents to find the most currentacademic update on student progress,24/7. All students and all parents haveaccess via a personalized login andpassword. Your child’s counselor canprovide this information if you missed Backto School night. If you specifically desirea paper report card for the quarter grade, please contact my office via mail or email(msusank@garces.org) and we will makearrangements. To keep track of upcoming homeworkassignments, students should use theirlesson planners (“Green Books”) butparents can also keep up by accessingthe Garces web site (garces.org) where allinstructors post homework assignmentsby 4:00 PM each day. Click on “Teachers/Staff” and scroll down to your child’steacher. Each instructor's home pagehas a homework link. Students should bedoing at least 30-45 minutes of homeworkper class to prepare for all core academiccourses. All School TestingWednesday, October 17, 2012, is All SchoolTesting Day for freshmen, sophomores andjuniors. Juniors and Sophomores will takethe PSAT (Practice Scholastic AptitudeTest) published by College Board. This testis taken by over one million high schooljuniors across the country on this dayand serves as both practice for the SATcollege entrance test AND is the qualifyingexam for National Merit Scholarshipsand rankings. Freshmen on this day willtake ReadiTest, also published by CollegeBoard.Increasingly, these standardized tests (SATand also ACT) are gaining more and moreweight in the college admission process.Garces Memorial High School is the onlyschool in Kern County that dedicates timeto underclassmen in preparation for bothSAT and ACT college readiness tests. InApril of 2013, Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors will take practice ACT tests(EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT respectively). All of these practice tests inform studentsof where they stand when there is stilltime left to make improvements beforethe tests really count in late Junior andearly Senior year. Scores from all Octoberpractice tests will be distributed by studentcounselors when they are returned to theschool. All seniors should be working on collegeapplications and using on-line test prepprograms to prepare for the fall SAT tests. Please see your counselor for questionsor assistance.SeniorsUpcoming Testing DatesSATACTOctober 6 SAT I/IIOctober 27November 3 SAT I/IIDecember 1 SAT I/II December8Please note, the December test dates arethe last where scores will be availablein time for consideration in collegeadmissions for UC and most privatecolleges.Underclass College PreparationCollege bound juniors should plan to takeACT and SAT tests in May and June ofjunior year but it is strongly recommendedthat juniors also take both of these testsin January and February. Research hasshown that taking the SAT and ACT testsmore than once makes students morecomfortable with both the test materialand the timing format which can leadto improved scores, but don’t be fooled, students need to study for these tests.Just the act of taking the test multipletimes is usually not enough to raisescores significantly. Please refer to theGarces Handbook calendar for registrationdeadlines for all upcoming tests and talk toyour child’s counselor for further details.Extracurricular EligibilityIn order to participate in extracurricularactivities, students are expected tomaintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher andmaintain passing grades in their classes.Eligibility for the next grading period (endof fall sports and start of winter sports)will be declared the last week in October. Please do not wait until mid-October tocheck on your student athlete’s progressas by then it may be too late and resultin a huge disappointment to them if theyare unable to compete in the fall playoffs, winter sports, dances, or other activities. If you have any concerns, please discussthem with teachers, counselors, andcoaches. As student-athletes, we wish tosee them succeed in all their endeavors.Should your child earn grades in Octoberthat make them ineligible to participatein extracurricular activities, a letter will besent home communicating the details andalso their options.Semester ExamsAs far off as it may seem, October marksthe mid-point in the first semester. Finalexams for the first semester will begin onDecember 18. Please refer to the schoolcalendar in the Garces Handbook for theexam schedule. All students are expectedto take their exams at this time. Familyvacations should not be scheduled duringexam week. If there is a reason why yourstudent will not be able to take an examon the scheduled date, please call me(ext. 110) as soon as possible. Studentswho take their exams as scheduled tendto get better results than the student whotakes the test at another time. Studentsrequesting a delayed exam are requiredto fill out a Delayed Exam Request Form. This can be obtained in the office at Ms.Hylton’s desk or the counseling center. Please help your student to beginorganizing and preparing for these testswell before exam week. Encourage yourstudent to attend any review sessions.Students who are having difficulty witha subject should be meeting the teacheron a regular basis during collaboration orduring additional office hours available tohelp students. Please encourage your student to be oncampus fifteen minutes before the examtime. Students should be in their seatsand ready to begin the test when the finalbell rings. When a student arrives lateto an exam, it does not put the studentin the best circumstances to do wellon the test. Delayed/make-up examsmust be coordinated with the individualinstructor. If you have any academic questionsor concerns, please do not hesitate tocontact me at ext. 110.4
