Feature: Words. Ideas. Inspiration.Greater Sudbury Public Library presents:The Soundtrack of our Livesby Michelle FexFrom an early age we are exposed to music and songs, usually by a friend, parent or sibling, the music is there often without us realizing that it isplaying in the background. It is only later when we hear a particular songthat it brings right back to a space in time. The personal soundtrack foreveryone is usually different because experiences are individual, but whatis shared is the music. This ongoing GSPL discussion series will focus on topical issues of the day and engaging topics. There is a very famous song “HotelCalifornia” written by the Eagles thathas been interpreted and deconstructedmany ways. Generations of peoplethought that the song had hiddenmeanings and was relaying messages.Very recently in a documentary, thesongwriter Glen Frey was quotedas saying that there were no hiddenmeanings in the song, that the song waswhatever the listener wanted it to be. Inother words the musicians created themusic, released it to the world and thereceivers then each ascribed a differentmeaning to the song. The meaningswere found through their individual lensand made up the soundtracks of theirlives. We have moved a long time awayfrom records and the seventies musicscene with the advent of digital music. Many thought that digital music would bethe death of the music industry, insteadwhat has happened is more opportunityto hear music in many places, iPod, iPad,satellite radio, cellphone etc. Becauseof the ease of access, many people haverediscovered their music collections.GSPL has been blessed with being thedonor recipient of CBC Radio/RadioCanada’s entire CD Library as a result ofthis paradigm shift. We now have 17,000more ways for everyone to rediscover oldmusic, discover new music, and add tothe soundtracks of their lives.Anyone who grew up listening to thosevinyl records talks about the interactiveexperience that came from records.A vinyl record offered the listener anexperience. It was a multi-stage processto enjoy music. First you had to go to arecord store to purchase the music andthen peel off the plastic sheeting andthen fire up the stereo. Once the musicstarted the experience did not stop, records came with dust jackets and linernotes. In addition to following along withthe music, listeners could read all abouttheir favourite artists and see pictures ofthe band. For many it was the only waythat they could ever visualize the band.Digital CD’s continued a slimmed downversion of liner notes to some degree, what was lost to some degree is theinteractivity of listening to music. What still exists,is the way thatmusic interacts withmemory and howthat can transcendspace and time.A middle age adult who hears a particularsong can vividly recall being 17 andall the sensations of that era when theyhear a song. Music is a unique qualifier,it makes all things equal regardless ofstatus. Race, gender, and socio economicstatus are all erased when the musicstarts. It also has the unique ability toenable people to lose themselves inthe moment and just experience thesong. These zen like qualities offer themusic listener an experience like noother. Music lives at the library so, visitany branch of the GSPL and discoverour amazing music collection and createa new memory that will become thesoundtrack of your life. It’s Not Easy Being Green. When: Thursday, Thursday October 3, 2013 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.Where: South End LibraryPanelists:Ethical Moderator:Jamie Robertson is the Coordinator of the EthicsDrew Brennan, Senior Environmental Officer with the Ministry of theEnvironments (MOE) Sudbury District Office: As an EnvironmentalOfficer his duties include inspections of commercial and industrial facility’sand ensuring they are operating in compliance with Ontario environmentlegislation and regulations, this includes responding to environmentalincidents such as spills, public complaints and concerns and public outreach.Meredith Morris: Sudbury Hyundai, Sudbury: Meredith compliments herMarketing/Business Administration education with more than 20 years ofexperience in all aspects of the automotive industry. Childrenare spontaneous with joy, laughter, dance and song, and withtheir energy instill beauty and grace to our surroundings alongwith hope and blessings to our world. As an adult, flashes ofinspiration have taken many forms in my life. Reaching out tobe of service, singing with Shania Twain at the Sudbury Arena, who heard the notes, the lyrics, and the vibrations of the vocalsand guitar were indeed lifted and carried to a place of purpose, hope and love.As a yoga teacher, I am inspired to nurture the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. Teaching yoga at the YMCAas a volunteer provides me with an opportunity to inspireparticipants to live a more balanced life. After the practice, participants leave lighter than when they walked in. That iswhat inspires me to continue teaching yoga. To my surprise,The definition of Inspiration in the dictionary is the process ofbeing mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especiallyto do something creative: “flashes of inspiration”.Synthetica by MetricMetals by FeistLion’s Roar by First Aid KitCASH by Johnny CashHighwayman 2 by Waylon Jennings,Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cashplaying the guitar, writing and reading poetry, writing lyricsand music, dancing, teaching yoga, meditation, the studyand practice of Reiki and Shamballa, along with the practice ofkindness, patience and compassion inspire me to continue myjourney of inspiration. All actions of inspiration have a rippleeffect in our world. Cause and effect as described in the Lawof Attraction speak truth. The Universe gathers every act ofkindness and returns it to us in the form of opportunitiesof inspiration.Synonyms to describe inspiration are afflatus and inhalation.Poetry, music, meditation, yoga, art, photography.I was inspired recently to sing a song at an Inspiration Caféevening, the lyrics speak of filling one’s heart with desires andspreading our light by speaking simple words that say I loveyou. How three simple words can bring hope, desires anddreams in a person’s life. As I sang these lyrics, I felt my heartfilling with purpose, hope and love. As inspiration filled myheart, ripples of these feelings filled the library and everyonea participant expressed an interest to become a yoga teacher. What a wonderful feeling to have an exchange of energy whereboth parties receive the gifts of purpose, fulfillmentand INSPIRATION.We are pleased to present anotherInspiration Café featuringThe Northern Allstar Steel PanDrummers Suhailyah & SadiykWhen: Thursday, September 26 , 2013 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.Where: South End LibraryJoin Suhailyah & Sadiyq as they talk about theirexperiences of musical inspiration and the historyand culture of the SteelPan Drums.6 Check it Out! Fall 2013 Greater Sudbury Public Library Greater Sudbury Public Library Words.
