. Other <strong>District</strong>-Excused Absences:i. Student is not in proper physical or mental condition to attend school or aneducational program. In the case of long-term absences, the <strong>District</strong> mayrequest the parent/guardian to obtain a written statement from a physicianor licensed practitioner as proof of the physical or mental condition of thestudent. The excuse shall be in writing, state the period of time for whichit is valid and shall not exceed 30 days. The school attendance officer mayverify any excuse of this nature.ii. Family emergency to be communicated with the school attendance officer.iii. Death in the immediate family or funerals for close relatives or familyfriends.iv. Religious holiday observances.v. Quarantine as imposed by a public health officer.vi. Serving as an Election Official – Students may be excused to serve as anelection official provided they have at least a 3.0 grade point average orthe equivalent and have the permission of their parents/guardians and thebuilding principal.vii. Attendance at special events of educational value, school activities and forother special circumstances that show good cause approved by the schoolattendance officer.viii. Absence from school during a period of suspension or expulsion will alsobe treated as an excused absence for purposes of the procedures above;expelled pupils are not entitled, however, to the provisions in (c), below.IV.Make up worka. All students with excused absences shall be given the opportunity to make upwork missed in accordance with the following procedures:b. The student will be responsible to make up work missed by contacting his/herteachers of the classes missed. Teachers will grant students the number of daysmissed plus one for makeup time. This provision applies to all work assignedduring absences.c. Examinations missed during an excused absence shall be permitted to be taken ata time established by the teacher.d. Because of the individual nature of instruction at the elementary level, studentsare not always able to make up their work prior to an absence from school.Parents/guardians shall contact their child's teacher to discuss what options mightbe available.V. Unexcused Absencesa. Unexcused absences are defined as truant.b. Students with unexcused absences shall be permitted to make up their class workmissed during such absences. All students with unexcused absences shall bepermitted to make up examinations missed during such absences at a timedetermined by the teacher. Excessive unexcused absences will be dealt with onan individual basis.


c. An attendance letter for 5 unexcused absences occurring with a student (“5 daysunexcused” letter sent). This letter must be certified or registered.i. This letter includes Wis. Statute along with meeting date with parentii. If parent does not show for the meeting-a parent phone call by schoolattendance officer or designee will occur (home visit occurs if unable toreach parent by phone).iii. Involve student (if developmentally appropriate).d. <strong>School</strong> social worker will complete an assessment with the student and/or parentand develop a plan with all parties involved.e. Citation will be given by the police liaison officer.f. Truancy referral initiated.IX.<strong>Procedure</strong>s for Addressing Truancy ConcernsThe following procedures occur for all schools K-12a. Send letter when there are 10 tardies.b. Send 2 nd letter when student reaches 15 tardies.c. If tardies continue, set up a meeting or attendance officer or designee makesphone call.d. Student/Parent meetinge. Student assessmentf. Home visit
