THE RED THISTLE DANCERS
The Red Thistle Dancers, who have been performing
in and around the San Francisco Bay area for
more than 30 years, will present dances from both the
Country and Highland dance traditions. Highland dance
is the older of the two. There are accounts from mediaeval
times and earlier, of wild, painted, Scottish warriors
dancing on their shields or over their swords- a far
cry from the disciplined dance of present day Highland
competitions, where to merely touch sword or scabbard
with a toe means points will be deducted.
Of course, much changes in a thousand years!
Many of the dances we see today date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One body of
dance comes from the military, where dancing was compulsory in some regiments. Others are the
compositions of the traveling "Dancies" or dance teachers, who moved from castle to castle and
village to village with their tiny fiddles that could be played whilst dancing, passing on the dances
recently popular at Court and composing elegant pieces to honor their patrons and be performed
by the sons and daughters of the house.
Country dances evolved from the round and line dances of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries,
reaching more or less their present form by the time of Mary Queen of Scots (1542 -1587.)
Having been brought up in France and married to its future king, Mary returned to her native Scotland
in 1561, imbued with a love of dance and French culture -the source of much of the elegance
of Scottish Country dance. The longwise set with lines of dancers facing their partners comes from
the English Country dances; much later the quadrille introduced the Scots to the square set, which
they immediately modified to suit their own dance form. Scottish dancing is still an evolving art and
modern life has already exerted its influence upon the traditional dance.
Contemporary dancers, accustomed to processing large amounts of written and visual material,
demand much more complex choreography than their eighteenth century forebears as well
as more action within the dance. Exercise is important to our modern day computer-commuter
whereas the social aspect of the dance was of paramount importance to our ancestors, whose lives
were filled with physical labor.
DANCE
GENTAIKO
TsuruKame (Crane & Turtle) - Classical Japanese dance traditionally performed for auspicious
celebrations like New Year's, Weddings, and Anniversaries. The crane and turtle symbolize longevity
and foot stomping represents a way to purify. The story refers to the beauty of nature from
the changing color of maple leaves to the quiet white falling snow. The dance wishes all long life
and happiness. Soko Okesa (Soko -refers to San Francisco Japantown, Okesa is a type of hat)
- A new dance for the 1 DOth Anniversary of SF Japantown in 2006 celebrates the pioneers of San
Francisco's first generation Japanese American, "Issei". The movement suggests cutting stalks of
rice and scattering the seeds as we watch, wait, and symbolically represent the next generation of
growth and development. The music is Sado Okesa, the village of Sado Island, Japan. Wani Natte
Odoruo (Just Dance)- Choreography by Madame Fujima Kansuma in Los Angeles created for Nisei
Week Parade 2006. This modern music composition reflects the new generation qf Japanese
and Japanese American.
ELIZABETH STRONG
Turkish Rom dance -The Rom of Turkey have their own unique, improvised and very expressive
dance with hand gestures and foot and hip work. The music is also unique and stylized, involving
improvised solos that express the musicians own voice. This dance is typically informal, danced at
parties and weddings. Music: Traditional Turkish Rom Music Medley: Roman Olsun and Kizim Kizim
performed by Dan Cantrell and Rumen Sali Shopov.
BARBARY COAST CLOGGERS
Forked Deer- Clogging encapsulates a long history of the vibrant and adventurous spirit of America.
In Forked Deer, we celebrate the birth of dance and display its founding element- fun! Bucket
to the South- Cloggers dance to most of the wide-range of formation styles, such as single lines,
contra lines, V-formations, and big circles seen here. Foggy Mountain Breakdown- As old-time
music evolved into bluegrass, clogging kept on going with the changes. This tune by bluegrass
fathers Earl & Scruggs is a popular favorite in the clogging community. Fisher's Hornpipe/Devil's
Dream- Scottish step dances are part of the clogging tradition and hold greater influence in Canadian
clogging styles. This dance is a demonstration of many of the Scottish elements still present
in American clogging.
GENTAIKO
Kojo No Tsuki (The moon over the Ruined Castle). This song became a classic piece because
of it's nostalgic qualities of traditional beauty in Japan. Hachijo (Island of Hachijo). A new choreographed
piece in traditional Japanese style of odori (folk dance) and taiko (drumming). Speaks
of the strength of women on the Island of Hachijo. Hanagasa Ondo A traditional festival in Japan
where thousands of people gathering on the streets to dance in groups wearing colorful costumes.
It is a celebration of the beauty of flowers literally and figuratively.
ELIZABETH STRONG
Bellydance Piece with Sword- The history of bellydance is shrouded in mystery. Some say it
came out of birthing rituals in the Middle East, some say it was performed by men dressed as
women because it was inappropriate for women to perform. What is certain is that in the past century,
Egyptian-style belly dance has had many influences including the Ballet Russe, and folkloric
dances from throughout Egypt. Also, just as the West has long had a fascination with "The Orient"
so has the East had a fascination with Western aesthetic and culture, and so Hollywood has
had an impact on the "cabaret" costume of bellydance. Here, Elizabeth performs her own style of
bellydance based on over 10 years of study in both the East and the West. Music: Ciganko Moje
(Traditional) and Whisper Hungarian In My Ear written by Dan Cantrell, performed by Rumen Sali
Shopov, Dan Cantrell, and Susan Worland-Bentley.
BARBARY COAST CLOGGERS
Uncle Pen - Lines dances grew in popularity in both the country and disco scenes of the 1970's.
They also caught on in the clogging scene. This is the only dance the Barbary Coast Cloggers
perform in line formation. Orange Blossom Special- Clogging in England is tied to the industrial
revolution as working people tapped their feet to the sound of machinery. What better way to mixed
traditions than to dance to a song where the fiddles are geared to the sounds and rhythm of a train.
Hambone- Originally known as Pattin' Juba, this dance style was brought over the Atlantic by the
West African slaves. Banned from playing their drums, they resorted to patting their thighs, chest,
and various body parts in complex rhythms as accompaniment to other dances. Rocky Top- This
song named after an Appalachian mountain peak (ironically located in North Carolina) has become
Tennessee's official state song. The great bluegrass crowd-pleaser is also as big a celebration for
us, wrapping up with the solos and duets that characterize clogging at its inception.

This is the first draft of this program. Since the Highland dances all (except the duct) require
several people, there is very little opportunity for rest during this program. We shall have to
practice th ings in sequences to build up stamina!
The final highland slot may be Shepherd's Crook, which I know the group has been working
on, but that might be too long. I wi ll hy to get a definitive time for the program overall as
soon as possible and see what time is available for that item.
