vi<strong>Get</strong> <strong>Ha</strong>-<strong>Shemot</strong> – Divorce of the NamesPreface<strong>Get</strong> <strong>Ha</strong>-<strong>Shemot</strong> is Abulafia’s attempt to describe thegeneral ideology and cosmology that underlie thefundamental principle of Kabbalah – that names and lettersare the essential, active, and creative elements of reality.He meant it as a rule of thumb for the masters of thenames to know the truth behind the names they use,because no name can properly be used without suchknowledge. In this work, which was written from the startfor general distribution, Abulafia outlines the cosmic stageon which his entire Kabbalah is set, and explains its generalpurpose – the perfection of the mind by way of theintellect. This makes <strong>Get</strong> <strong>Ha</strong>-<strong>Shemot</strong> an indispensableintroduction to his entire Kabbalah. Abulafia explains thatKabbalah is the part of Torah that must remain concealedfrom the public, and only received by word of mouth froma worthy teacher to a worthy student.
