REGIMENTAL MANUALREGIMENTAL FAMILYCHAPTER 3 - REGIMENTAL FAMILYSECTION 1 - BACKGROUND<strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Family itself is comprised of many different elements which include Strathconasserving on regimental and extra-regimental employment, retired Strathconas, members of the <strong>Regimental</strong>Association and its branches, the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum including the archives, the Strathcona MountedTroop, the <strong>Regimental</strong> Band and sponsored cadet corps. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Society oversees the activitiesof the extended <strong>Regimental</strong> Family. All the above elements of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Family are discussed inthis Chapter.SECTION 2 - REGIMENTAL SOCIETY1. <strong>The</strong> formation of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Society grew from the concerns of those serving and friends ofthe Regiment during the unification of the Canadian Forces and the subsequent changes in policiesrelating to unification and centralization. A particular concern was the loss of control over funds andassets acquired over a long period of time through considerable effort by Strathconas and their friends.External policies were making it increasingly difficult to foster and maintain Strathcona style and spiritand to retain discretion in the conduct of regimental affairs.2. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Society was, therefore, established on 15 November 1974 as a registered charityunder the Societies Act of Alberta in order to oversee and guide the affairs of the extended Regiment.ARTICLE 3201 - SOCIETY OBJECTIVES<strong>The</strong> objectives of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Society are:a. to further the traditions and heritage of <strong>Lord</strong> Strathcona’s <strong>Horse</strong> (Royal Canadians);b. to hold, preserve and maintain artefacts, memorabilia and belongings of the Society;c. to establish, maintain and operate the museum of the Society and <strong>Lord</strong> Strathcona’s<strong>Horse</strong> (Royal Canadians);d. to establish, maintain and operate horse riding facilities; ande. to collect and disseminate information of interest and relevance to members of theSociety. 1ARTICLE 3202 - OFFICERS OF THE SOCIETY<strong>The</strong> authority of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Society rests with the Officers of the Society and the Board ofDirectors, who are as follows:a. Officers of the Society:(1) Chairman. Colonel of the Regiment;(2) President. Commanding Officer;1 <strong>The</strong>se objectives are the original objectives of the Society as registered with the Province of Alberta on 15 November 1974.<strong>The</strong> objectives and constitution of the Society are currently under review by the Board of Directors.3-1
