REGIMENTAL MANUALREGIMENTAL FAMILY<strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Archives was incorporated into the museum in the late fifties. Today the <strong>Lord</strong>Strathcona’s <strong>Horse</strong> (Royal Canadians) <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum has several thousand items and artefacts ondisplay or stored in its collection for research and future use. <strong>The</strong> Archives holds books, records,documents, orders, albums and diaries dating from 1873 to the present.4. Since 1990, the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum has been housed in the Museum of the Regiments in theformer Sir Sam Steele School in Currie Barracks, Calgary. <strong>The</strong> Museum of the Regiments maintains sixgalleries – five permanent and one temporary. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum is one of the four autonomousmuseums within the Museum of the Regiments and maintains one of the permanent galleries in themuseum. <strong>The</strong> Museum of the Regiments project was made possible through the generosity of the citizensand corporate members of Calgary as well as the City of Calgary and the Alberta Provincial and FederalGovernments and is supported in part by the Calgary Military Museum Society.ARTICLE 3401 - MUSEUM AUTHORITY<strong>The</strong> formation of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum was not officially authorized until 9 March 1964, atwhich time Alberta Area Order 1615-1 (A) provided authority for the museum, retroactive to 1 April1963. <strong>The</strong> Museum was operated in accordance with Queen’s Regulations (Army) 27.01 and CanadianArmy Orders 143-8. <strong>The</strong> museum is currently established and operated as a Canadian Forces-accreditedmuseum. 2 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Regimental</strong> Society and a Canadian Forces grant funds the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum.ARTICLE 3402 - MUSEUM PURPOSE<strong>The</strong> purpose of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum is to collect, preserve, study and exhibit those objectsthat will serve to illustrate the story of the Regiment in Canadian history, and more specifically, Canadianmilitary history.ARTICLE 3403 - MUSEUM GOVERNANCE<strong>The</strong> Policies and Procures <strong>Manual</strong> of the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museum details the <strong>Regimental</strong> Museumresponsibilities to the <strong>Regimental</strong> Society. <strong>The</strong> manual is maintained by the Regiment under the authorityof the <strong>Regimental</strong> Society and is held as a separate document by the <strong>Regimental</strong> <strong>Second</strong> in Command.ARTICLE 3500 - GENERALSECTION 5 - STRATHCONA MOUNTED TROOP1. Originally formed in 1923 as a musical ride, the Mounted Troop performed routinely in WesternCanada and the United States until it ceased to exist in 1939 when the Regiment became a mechanizedarmoured regiment. At that time, the famous musical ride became the sole responsibility of the RoyalCanadian Mounted Police. During this same early period, members of the Regiment frequentlyparticipated in a variety of equestrian competitions and activities throughout the West.2. <strong>The</strong> Ceremonial Mounted Troop, as the Troop was called, was reformed in 1974 to prepare forthe Regiment’s seventy-fifth and the City of Calgary’s one-hundredth anniversaries. This Troop wasdisbanded in early 1976 and the horses disposed of by returning them to the original donors or throughpublic sale.3. In the winter of 1977 money to support a troop was again raised by the Regiment, primarilythrough Mr. Alan Graham and the good graces of the generous citizens of Calgary. <strong>The</strong> Ceremonial2 Canadian Forces Administrative Order 27-5 (Canadian Forces Museums).3-5
