T h e y feed u p o n the leaves, b u d s , and f l o w e r s of many plants. S y m p t o m s . T h e d a m a g e c a u s e d i s o b v i o u s o n p i g e o n - pea, w h e r e t h e larvae feed u p o n leaves a n d inflorescence. D e s c r i p t i o n a n d b i o l o g y . T h e Amsactaspp and S. obliqua are c o m m o n l y k n o w n as 'hairy caterpillars' for they are d e n s e l y c o v e r e d w i t h l o n g hair (Fig. 39). Chrysodeixis chalcites (Fig. 40) a n d Acanthoplusia orichalceaare s e m i - l o o p e r s . T h e f o r m e r is green and the latter is also green but w i t h w h i t e lateral lines a n d black spines. Euproctisspp are 'tussock caterpillars' so c a l l e d b e c a u s e they have p r o m i - nent, c o m p a c t tufts of short hair (Fig. 41). T h e hair of these a n d o t h e r caterpillars cause skin rashes a n d irritation so care m u s t be taken w h i l e h a n d l i n g t h e m . C o n t r o l . P o p u l a t i o n s of these larvae on p i g e o n p e a are s e l d o m large e n o u g h to merit pesticide use. However, t h e r e are o c c a s i o n a l r e p o r t s of severe d e f o l i a t i o n , particu- larly by Amsactaspp. Several insecticides i n c l u d i n g e n d o - sulfan n o r m a l l y give a d e q u a t e c o n t r o l . 45
