In keeping with these objectives, the PACEGlobal Leadership Committee defines a product development project each year, in order to enhanceand advance the educational experience by providing an industry-like collaborative project experiencefor students.The PACE projects enable students to work in distributed virtual teams, advance their project planningand execution skills , and experience the same challenges that industrial designers, product engineers,and manufacturing engineers encounter in industry. By engaging students in collaborative activities,the projects also stimulate innovation.Students on the PACE Sustainable Urban Transport teams presenting to the judging teams during the project competition.”PACE Sustainable Urban Transport (SUT) Global Project:First Year OverviewThe 2010-2012 PACE Sustainable Urban Transport(SUT) project addresses the future of urbantransportation and challenges students to designand engineer an SUT solution for a specific urbanarea. The PACE Global Leadership team chose tofocus the global project on the area of sustainableurban transportation due to increasing worldwideattention on the impending growth of urban areasand the need for transport systems to make apositive contribution to the environmental, socialand economic sustainability of the communitiesthey serve.Overall project leadership for industrial designwas provided by Professor Brigid O’Kane of theUniversity of Cincinnati (USA), and for engineeringby Dr. Marcelo Alves of the University of SãoPaulo (Brazil). The judging team provided projectdeliverables and judging criteria for four categories,and each team distributed responsibility for thedeliverables according to their interestsand strengths.12More than 80 engineering and industrial designstudents from 28 PACE Institutions undertookthe project in the first year, forming seven teams.Each team was comprised of one design institutionand four engineering institutions. Each teamtargeted a specific urban area and developed asustainable transport solution customized for thatcity. The urban areas selected reflect thegeographically diverse nature of the teams:Ahmadabad, India; Seoul, Korea; Shanghai,China; Monterrey, Mexico; and Cincinnati, USA.Each team was responsible for its own teamorganization, project management, interimdeliverables and timeline, communications, andteam-building activities.The PACE SUT teams in the Kaiser Building Atrium during theAnnual Forum at the University of British Columbia
Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering EducationPACE SUT Judging CompetitionStudents and faculty from the seven SUT teamspresented their results to the judging panel at the2011 PACE Annual Forum in Vancouver, B. C.,Canada on Thursday, July 28th. The teams wereevaluated in four categories: Market Research,Industrial Design, Product Engineering, andManufacturing Engineering. In addition toassessing the design and technical work of theteams, the judges considered the collaborativestrategy and skills exhibited by each team.The “Top Award Ready for Production” in theProduct Engineering category went to Team 5,comprised of students from Virginia Tech (USA),Michigan State (USA), ITESM-Monterrey (Mexico),and ITESM-Toluca (Mexico). The “Top AwardReady for Production” for ManufacturingEngineering was awarded to Team 6, consistingof students from the College for Creative Studies(USA), Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico), andPrairie View A&M University (USA).The winning teams in each category wererecognized at the Friday, July 29 Awards Dinner atthe Museum of Anthropology on the University ofBritish Columbia campus. Awards werebestowed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each ofthe four judging categories, as well as an overallbest award for collaboration.Judges selected Team 3 for the Most InnovativeDesign award, the First Place award in the MarketResearch category, and the Overall Collaborationaward. Team 3 consists of students from NationalInstitute of Design (India), Peoples EducationSociety Institute of Technology (India), UniversidadIberoamericana (Mexico), Michigan TechnologicalUniversity (USA), and Sri JayachamarajendraCollege of Engineering (India).P. E. S. Institute of Technology (India) student Vishwas B.
