The 2008 Eastlake graduate marched in front of millions of live and television viewers Nov. 24 in the annual parade in New York City. She danced with 59 other penguin-suit-clad young dancers as part of The Young Americans, in their performance of “Winter Wonderland.” To see a video of the performance, visit www.SammamishReview.com. SAMMAMISH REVIEW December 8, 2010 • 7 City developing regulations for electric car charging By Caleb Heeringa With several brands of electric cars set to hit the market in the coming months, Sammamish is looking to offer public charging stations. Depending on how the Planning Commission and City Council rule, the city may also require chargers in new developments and parking lots. The city has applied for two different federal grants that would fund battery recharge units that would likely be installed at the Sammamish Library and City Hall, Community Development Director Kamuron Gurol said. “I imagine you might see these outside City Hall in the next six months to a year,” Gurol told the Planning Commission Dec. 2. “A place like a library where people are stopping with their kids for an hour or two – that might be a great location.” Gurol said determining the best place to locate the charging stations was an inexact science that Sammamish and other cities were just starting to grapple with. The state legislature recently passed legislation instructing “I imagine you might see these outside City Hall in the next six months to a year.” – Kamuron Gurol, Development director – VasectomyCenter cities near Interstates 5 and 90 to produce zoning regulations for the installation of charging stations. The units cost between $2,000 and $4,000 and would likely be covered by the federal grants, though Gurol said there could be some installation costs. It will be up to the commission and City Council to decide whether the city will offer the battery charging for free or charge to make up for the cost of electricity. While many have considered park and ride lots a natural place for the chargers, Gurol said the types of places that people make shorter stops – grocery stores, shopping malls and museums – would be best. The public chargers would be in the middle of the speed spectrum, fully charging a vehicle in four to eight hours. The average home charger takes 18 hours to fully charge a vehicle. Some charger manufacturers make “rapid charge” units that can charge a dead battery to 80 percent capacity in 20 to 40 minutes, though government and law enforcement agencies would most often use these. The commission is considering a draft code for the charging stations suggested by the Puget Sound Regional Council. The code suggests making it illegal to park in spots near the battery charger if you’re not driving an electric vehicle – similar to how handicapped spots currently work. It seems that people all over the world can’t get enough of this noble metal. I get asked regularly why white gold jewelry “turns” yellow over time. Let me start off by saying that gold is always yellow. Jewelers make gold whiter by mixing nickel or palladium with it. Keep in mindthatmostjewelryismadein 14k (karat) or 18k. As a percentage, 14k contains 58.5% gold and 18k contains 75% gold. The other 41.5% or 25% is mostly silver and copper with white g o l d containing the aforementioned nickel or palladium. Now that you have a basic understanding of gold let me tell you why your white gold jewelry is “turning” yellow. White gold jewelry is not as “white” as silver or platinum which are naturally white. Jewelers routinely coat white gold with another metal calledrhodiumtomakeitappear whiter. Rhodium is in the platinum family of metals and is a nice bright white color. But, because the rhodium is just a coating it wears off. So, your jewelry is not really turning yellow but the rhodium coating is wearing off revealing the natural, slightly yellowish color of the white gold.
