Students are scheduled for routine weekly as well as extra “as needed” visits to the wellstocked, automated library media center. The library coordinates the Accelerated Readercomputerized reading motivation and comprehension program.SCHEDULESThe front doors at Rockville are opened at 7:40 AM daily. The school day begins at 8:10 AMwith dismissal at 3:20 PM. Individual class schedules can be obtained from the classroom teacher.MORNING DROP OFFAt Rockville, we ask that students who do not ride a bus and are being brought to school usethe valet drop off line in the morning. School personnel will open the passenger’s side door andhelp students out of the vehicle. Adults are stationed throughout the building to help directstudents to the correct locations.DISMISSAL PROCEDURESFor the 2013-2014 school year students who do not ride the bus and will be picked up afterschool will meet parents outside the building. To help pull traffic off of Rockville, and the numberof students we are responsible for there will be 2 pick-up locations.If your child’s last name begins with the letter A-L :They will be dismissed out the front doors with adult supervision.Parents should wait outside near the circle planter located to the right of the front doors.Please park in the front parking lot and walk up to get your child.We will not send any child unsupervised to the parking lot.Parking will not be permitted in the circle drive located in front of the school.If your child’s last name begins with the letter M-Z : They will be dismissed out the doors that open to the Court Yard located by the playgroundwith adult supervision. Parents should wait outside near the picnic tables. Please park in the back parking lot and walk up to get your child. We will not send any child unsupervised to the parking lot. Parking in this area will be permitted after 3:05 when all students are back in the buildingfrom recess.Students who walk or ride their bike to school will meet an adult near the office and be escortedacross 10 th and Rockville at the cross walk.TARDIESStudents not in class at this time are considered tardy and need to report to the office for apermit to class. Students who leave early before dismissal are also counted as tardy.ABSENTEEISMPage 6
Parents and/or guardians are requested to inform the school of their child’s pendingabsence. Call the office at (913)837-1970. Without parent notification, the absence will beconsidered unexcused. Students with 3 or more consecutive absences will need to furnish adoctor’s note upon returning to school.VISITOR/ Volunteer POLICYAfter 8:10 AM, the front doors are the only doors unlocked at RES throughout the schoolday. To enter the building, visitors must report to the office, sign in and get a visitors badge. Allvisitors are asked to keep the badge on and visible while in the building. When a visitor is ready toleave they need to report back to the office sign out and return the visitors badge.ATTENDANCE POLICY – COMPULSORY ATTENDANCEThe compulsory attendance law makes it mandatory that any child who has reached the ageof six years and is under the age of eighteen years may be enrolled in school. The law makesexceptions for children who are physically or mentally incapacitated. Any child not satisfying therequirements of the compulsory attendance law, being absent from school three consecutive daysof 5 or more in any semester, is a “truant”.All students are expected to attend school regularly and to report to each class on time.Absences of students must be explained by parents or guardians when the student returns toschool. Before a student is admitted to class after being tardy or absent, he/she must get an admitslip from the office. In known cases of truancy, the Principal will notify the SRS office. Truancy isdefined as missing school three successive days or more without a legitimate excuse, or truancycharge may be brought against a student for five unexcused absences that are not consecutive.This may also be reported to the County Attorney’s office.ABSENCES AND EXCUSESThe building principal or their designated representative shall be responsible fordetermining if an absence is excused or unexcused. The following criteria shall be used in makingthe determination:I. Excused AbsencesA. Illness with a parents verification, verification by the school nurse, andmedical or dental appointments.B. School sponsored activities such as athletics, music, etc.C. Pre-arranged approved absences by parents for funerals, family business,take your child to work, etc. (Contact should be made with theadministration at least 24 hours prior to the event)D. Educational experience approved by the principal.E. Church activities.If a child leaves school for the above, it is counted as an absence and will affect perfect attendance.This is school board policy.PERFECT ATTENDANCEA student must be neither absent nor tardy from any class for the entire school year. Theonly exception being when the student is required by law to appear in court as a witness to testifywhen he/she is not involved in a violation of the law.EXCEPTIONAL ATTENDANCEA student who misses not more than one day of school has exceptional attendance.FERPA INFORMATION TO PARENTSPage 7
