These features differentiate the HPBV from theconventional swing-through butterfly valve in regards to sealingmethod and operational characteristics. Specifically, thetwo basic features are: (1) A PTFE, RTFE, or metal seal ringinstead of a liner, and (2) The employment of double offset(eccentric operation). Each of these features contributes tothe improved performance of HPBV’s compared to conventionalbutterfly valves. The use of a seal ring (PTFE, RTFE, or metal) eliminates theinherent problems of high sealing forces, due to interferencefit, and the resultant high wear rates due to scraping and scuffingof liners. Also, due to the design of the seal itself, which isa dynamic pressure-assisted member, ANSI Class VI shutoffrates are available throughout the full range of ANSI Class150, 300 and 600 ratings (soft-sealed constructions only). The double offset (eccentric) operating principles of bothseal offset (the seal ring centerline is offset from the shaftcenterline – see Figure 1) and shaft offset (the shaft centerlineis offset from the valve centerline – see Figure 1) allowsthe disc to get off the seal quickly due to the cammingrotation with respect to the valve/seal centerlines. This resultsin minimal sliding (friction producing) contact between thedisc and the seal ring with complete separation after only afew degrees of rotation. The overall characteristics of the 39003 Series are listed below:• Long seal life – Offset (eccentric) operation gets the disc offthe seal quickly, minimizing sliding contact and friction, resulting in reduced seal wear and lower breakaway andseating torque requirements.• Fast/dynamic operation – Offset (eccentric) operation eliminatesdisc-to-seal friction throughout the operating rangeresulting in fast response to input signals. Also, the disctends to move in the direction of flow, assisting the valve andactuator to maximize the allowable operating pressures.• Excellent flow characteristics – the offset (eccentric) discdesign provides an approximate equal percentage flowcharacteristic through its full travel of 90° rotation yielding aCv ratio of 100:1.• Extra heavy shafts with keyed ends for actuator mounting– precise and accurate positioning without lost motion orbacklash.PTFE-lined low-friction bearing – Reduces operating torqueand promotes fast response to valve and actuator action. Thetriple bearing support of the shaft prevents deflection of theshaft due to side-loading and incorporates a grounding circuit.Field replaceable components – Unlike most competitivevalves, shaft and disc need not be purchased as a set. The39003 Series uses tapered pins to attach the shaft and discpositively, yet provide component interchangeability.Trade names noted are for reference only. Masoneilan reserves the right tosupply trade-named material or equivalent.Valve CenterLineFlow to Open(Preferred)SealOffsetFigure 1Shaft CenterLineShaft OffsetFlow to CloseShaft Center LineCM9003 SD - 04/0039003 Series High Performance Butterfly Valves (HPBV) 2

FeaturesThe Masoneilan 39003 HPBV includes unique valve seal designs for metal, soft seal, and fire-safe configurations.Disc/Nitrided300 SeriesStainless SteelBackup Ring;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;InconelSealDiscSeal“O” RingDiscMetal SealSoft Seal;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;“O” RingMetalSealGasketMetal Seal DesignThe metal seal design incorporates anInconel seal for higher tensile strength,a 300 series stainless steel back-upring in the seal cavity for axial seal support, and a disc that is case hardenedby nitriding. The Inconel seal, by its dynamic andflexible design, applies enough forceper linear inch against the disc edge(Rockwell Hardness of C66 to C70) toobtain an optimum sealing characteristicwhile controlling the loads betweenthe metal surfaces. The metal seal design can beutilized for temperatures up to 900˚F,in compliance with ANSI B16.34pressure/temperature specifications.Leakage is rated at Class IV per ANSIFCI 70-2.Soft Seal DesignThe soft seal design provides abi-directional bubble tight shutoff (zeroleakage) through the use of a patentedseal. This unique seal design createsa self-energized seal in vacuum-to-lowpressure applications.Under higher pressure conditions, theseal is also designed to confineand direct movement of the soft sealagainst the disc edge, up to the fullANSI Class 150, 300 and 600 ColdWorking Pressures. The soft seal is designed for high serviceswith minimal wear and low torque.Seal replacement is a simple procedurerequiring no special tools.Fire-Safe Seal DesignThe fire-safe seal design incorporatestwo patented seals which functiontogether to seal off pipeline flow. In normaloperation, the soft seal provides abi-directional “bubble tight” shutoff(zero leakage); the metal seal providesbi-directional shutoff in the event of afire, in conformance to industry firesaferequirements. With little or no pressure, the fire-safeseal creates a self-energized sealagainst the disc. Higher line pressuresact on the geometry of both sealsto dynamically load them against thedisc, creating higher sealing forces ineither direction. The metal seal is made of Inconelmaterial which is shaped by a proprietaryhydroforming process into itsunique, patented design. Stainlesssteel outer bearings are included forpost-fire disc and shaft alignment.Fireproof packing is used to preventexternal shaft leakage.CM9003 SD - 04/0039003 Series High Performance Butterfly Valves (HPBV) 3

Allowable Pressure DropsDresser Valve Division has created a simple actuator sizingand selection program, which allows for quick and accurateactuator sizing based on the specific service conditions. This program is designed to run in Microsoft ® Excel ® , and isavailable from your local Masoneilan sales representative. The opening screen of the sizing program is shown below.Operating variables can be selected from a number ofpull-down menus. The program will then provide an actuatorrecommendation, along with calculations for the requiredtorque (with safety margins) for valve seating, unseating, and throttling conditions. This program covers standard product construction only. Please consult with your local Masoneilan sales representative,or with the factory, for applications and conditions notcovered by this program.CM9003 SD - 04/0039003 Series High Performance Butterfly Valves (HPBV) 14
