In multinational operation,the Corporation strictly follows the laws and regulations of the host countries, operatesbusiness lawfully, pays tax honestly, and always pursues equal and non-discriminativeemployment policy. It continuously increases the proportion of local employees, developslocal procurement and community investment, actively participates in local communityphilanthropy and cultural heritage protection, insists on serving the local communities throughvarious ways and modes, and contributes positively to the local economic development andsocial prosperity.27
The Corporation maintained and expanded the community development projects of theformer OZ Company with an investment of approximately AUD 4.4 million in theconstruction of local communities, community corporation development and educationaltraining.Case: “Gulf Community Agreement”The “Gulf Community Agreement” is a community development agreement signed jointlyby MMG, Queensland Government and local aboriginals. The aim of the agreement is toprovide education, training and employment opportunities for residents in the gulf areawith a commitment to protect local cultural heritage and environment.Many of the employees in Century Company of the MMG are aborigines and the Companycarries out pre-employment trainings to young aborigines to make them available forvarious jobs in the local mines. By November 2010, 17 of the 60 trainees had completedthe training courses and were appointed to the staff by the Company.The Company supported the cooperation between Golden Grove and local enterprises,providing skills training to the enterprises and helping young people seek employmentopportunities in mining and other industries.The implementation of projects by the Corporation in Laos increases incomes of communityresidents, and improves their living standards through purchasing foods and work clotheslocally and signing such contracts as transportation, air service and energy contracts with localenterprises. The Corporation has established a USD 3 million community trust fund jointlymanaged by the Corporation, Government and community leaders, and providesinfrastructure construction, health, education, agriculture and micro-credit for communitiestogether with UN-Habitat and related NGOs. In the operation, the Corporation emphasizesenvironmental protection and has passed the ISO14001 environmental certification, andformulates biodiversity protection plans to protect the endangered animals.Case: Sepon community trust fundThe community development project is managed by Seponcommunity trust fund in the Sepon mine in Laos. Since2003, MMG provided USD 500,000 to assist thegovernment annually with accumulative funds up toUSD2.90 million so far, mainly applied to communityconstruction, including highway construction, laying ofcables, hospital construction, education, tourism andmanual manufacture in 73 villages currently.Meanwhile, the Corporation has set up a rural constructionfund to assist rural construction, guiding local residents todevelop and improve their current environment.
