CONSERVATOIRE FOR DANCE AND DRAMABackgroundThe Conservatoire <strong>for</strong> Dance and Drama (CDD) was established <strong>in</strong> 2001 with a view to secur<strong>in</strong>g firmly<strong>the</strong> future <strong>of</strong> conservatoire-level dance and drama vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> higher education. It is acompany limited by guarantee and a registered charity. As a designated Higher Education Institute(HEI), it receives fund<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> Higher Education Fund<strong>in</strong>g Council (HEFCE) with an <strong>in</strong>stitutionalpremium to meet <strong>the</strong> exceptional costs <strong>of</strong> higher-level conservatoire tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.New modelCDD is constructed as a new-model HEI with a unique confederal structure. This comprises an<strong>in</strong>stitutional <strong>part</strong>nership between CDD and its affiliate schools. The affiliates enter <strong>in</strong>to collegialagreements with CDD to provide tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lead<strong>in</strong>g to HE qualifications. The relationship extends to fullcollegial <strong>part</strong>icipation by affiliates <strong>in</strong> CDD’s deliberative processes, decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g andadm<strong>in</strong>istration. At <strong>the</strong> same <strong>time</strong>, <strong>the</strong> affiliates rema<strong>in</strong> legally autonomous <strong>in</strong>stitutions. Legal status and governanceThe relationship between CDD and its affiliates is secured by a f<strong>in</strong>ancial memorandum and anoperat<strong>in</strong>g agreement (which sets <strong>the</strong> framework <strong>for</strong> this relationship), agreed with <strong>the</strong> govern<strong>in</strong>g body<strong>of</strong> each affiliate. CDD holds ultimate accountability <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> proper use and stewardship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publicfunds it receives.
