The Constitution– Unnecessarily Lengthy The Constitution is designed to set forth the fundamental principles by which a country should be governed. As a superior legal document, it ought to have the virtue of brevity. The lengthier the constitution, the more vital information becomes lost in details and the more amendments are needed, ostensibly to render it toner to national aspirations. This only makes it all the more unwieldy and impenetrable and, as such, it cannot remain the object of respect. Because of its length and complexity, ordinary citizens are baffled by it, and hesitate to have recourse to it in times of need. Being told that the constitution is comprehensible only to legal experts does little to solve their dilemma That is why most knowledgeable people, from Professor David Fellman of the University of Wisconson, an international expert in constitutionalism, to Nani Palkhiwala, the most renowned constitutionalist of India, have advocated a brief constitution.
