Mr. Rene Gonzalez supported me through every step of the waythrough my high school years from freshman to my senior year. He not only helped me, but he alsoassisted my two older sisters that attended Milby and went through the CIS program. My family is forevergrateful for all that he has done for us, and for supporting us through thick and thin. He listens toeveryone’s problems, and somehow he does his best to help all of us find solutions. This summer, I hopeto get a job through the CIS Summer Employment Program and start getting real life job experience. After the summer, I will be going to University of Houston Downtown to do basic studies and raisemy GPA for two semesters. Then I plan to transfer to University of Houston Main Campus and studyIndustrial Design. I couldn’t have done this without CIS and Mr. Rene Gonzalez. Minding Mental Health with the Hogg FoundationCommunities In Schools of Houston is excited and grateful to be partnering withThe Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at the University of Texas at Austin for the second year. The Hogg Foundation hasawarded Communities In Schools of Houston a four year $1.4 million grant to identify and address the mental health needs ofTransition Age Youth (ages 16-30) and their families.Transition Age Youth (TAY) with mental health challenges are faced with making complex decisions as they transition fromadolescence into young adulthood, such as renegotiating personal relationships, health care, education, employment, housingand personal finances at the same time that the support services they received as adolescents are phased out. The purpose ofthe grant is not only to address these transitional needs, but to provide opportunities for TAY and their families to have a voiceas equal partners at all levels of program planning, development and implementation.During the 2014-15 school year, TAY students have taken an active role in planning regular on-campus meetings, leading groupactivities, participating in TAY cluster meetings with grant staff, and organizing a TAY social fun day. TAY student feedbackfor the program has been informative, affirming, and critical to the continued implementation of services. In addition, CIS’ partners help to extend and support the mental health services offered to students. CIS’s partners who havehelped plan meetings and services and conducted focus groups are: The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston, DePelchinChildren’s Center, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Greater Houston, The Dibble Institute, Family Houston,Houston Galveston Institute, Mental Health America Houston, Montrose Center, NationalAlliance on Mental Illness, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.CIS of Houston is part of the bigger story of the Hogg Foundation awarding eight grantstotaling $10 million to Houston area organizations. Dr. Octavio N. Martinez, Jr., ExecutiveDirector of the Hogg Foundation says of the eight organizations, “We’re excited to see theseeight organizations launch the next phase of the multi-year TAYF initiative.” CIS joinsDr. Martinez in his excitement, and is grateful for the opportunity to serve our TAY students!A special thank you to our Donors (1/1/15 – 5/31/15)Larry J.
