Neighbouring the plant is CMSClinker’s own quarrying concessions of key raw materials -limestone, shale and sandstone - covering 78 hectares.Incorporated in 1992, the Company began as <strong>Sarawak</strong>Clinker under the <strong>Sarawak</strong> Economic DevelopmentCorporation (SEDC). Its plant was commissioned in 1996with a production capacity of 2,000 metric tones (MT)per day. This capacity was upgraded in 2004 to 2,400MT per day. In November 2007, the Company which hadsince seen ownership by Indonesian and Filipino entities,was acquired by CMS Cement Sdn <strong>Bhd</strong>, a subsidiary ofMalaysian public-listed conglomerate Cahya <strong>Mata</strong> <strong>Sarawak</strong>Berhad (CMS). January 2008 marked a new beginning forthe Company when it changed its name to CMS Clinker.Its current production capacity is 2,500 MT per day orup to 800,000 MT per annum. How is CLINKERmanufactured?Raw MaterialGrindingStep 1: QuarryingLimestone, shale and sandstoneform the main raw materialsto manufacture <strong>clinker</strong>. ForCMS Clinker, all three materialsare quarried within its plant atMambong, ensuring a continuoussupply of quality raw materials.Step 2: Crushing &Storage of Raw MaterialsDifferent crushers are used forthe three raw materials to obtainaggregates of less than 25 mmin size - limestone is crushedby a hammer crusher, shale isput through a roller crusher andsandstone is crushed by an impactcrusher. The resulting crushedmaterials are then stored in silosand storage halls.BurningStep 3: Mixing &Pre-HomogenisingProductLimestone (making up 78% of theraw material), shale (12%) andsandstone (10%) are mixed togetherand pre-homogenised using a boomstacker. This process results in rawmix. A reclaimer is then used totransfer this raw mix onto a conveyorto storage.Step 4: Pre-Grinding &GrindingThis next step involves a furtherreduction in size of the raw mix,limestone and iron ore components.These raw materials are ground witha hammer mill and two other ballmills to achieve an 82% passingrate through a 75 micron sieve. Theresulting fine raw meal powder isthen blended in the blending siloand pumped to a pre-heater. Thecoal used as fuel for the furnace isalso ground using a ball mill to a finepowder called kiln feed which hasan 80% passing rate through a 90micron sieve.Step 5:Pre-heating & BurningThe fine powdered raw meal andkiln feed are fed to the 5-stagepre-heater and kiln. Here, the<strong>clinker</strong>ing process happens:Temperature Process70 – 100 o C Drying100 – 750 o C Pre-heating750 - 1000 o C Calcination1000-1500 o C ClinkeringStep 6: Cooling & StoringFrom the kiln, the hot <strong>clinker</strong> iscooled to a temperature of 120 0 Cat the grate cooler which usesseven cooling fans.
