102 Scholarships Awarded to High School Graduates
On April 4th, 98 members of the Summit High School Class of 2011 were awarded approximately $310,000 from 70 community organizations. Among these
In addition to the scholarships awarded to Summit High School graduates, nine scholarships totaling $9,500 were awarded this spring to students
Reaching out to Former
Scholarship Recipients
The Summit Foundation plans to host a reception
for The Foundation’s previous scholarship recipients.
The reception will be the kick-off for The Summit
Foundation Scholars Program and intends to be a
great way for previous awardees to reconnect with old
friends, keep up-to-date on activities of The Foundation,
share experiences and ideas, and stay engaged with
philanthropic activities of The Summit Foundation.
Since The Foundation began granting college scholarships
in 1991, $1.55 million has been awarded.
In an effort to locate former scholarship recipients,
The Summit Foundation is asking for assistance. If you
or a family member received a scholarship from The
Foundation, please send current contact information
to Cheri Ryan at cheri@summitfoundation.org or
call 970.453.5970.
Long-time donor to The Summit Foundation, Bob Follett enjoys the blue sky morning
at Copper Mountain Resort.
First Tracks Morning
Hosted by Copper Mountain Resort
The Summit Foundation sends its appreciation to Copper
Mountain Resort for hosting our third annual passholder
program on March 24th. On a beautiful blue sky
morning, we were pleased to greet more than 100 of
The Summit Foundation’s passholders and top donors
for an exclusive morning at Copper Mountain Resort.
The Summit Foundation’s guests enjoyed skiing on freshly
groomed runs off Timberline lift before the mountain
opened to the general public. Several of our donors
reported skiing more than 11,000 vertical feet in just an
hour and a half. A private breakfast followed at Kokopelli’s
with remarks by representatives from Copper Mountain
Resort, Vail Resorts Echo, and The Summit Foundation.
A big thank you to Copper Mountain Resort’s COO,
Gary Rodgers, and Director of Employee Experience,
Kelly Renoux, and their staff for opening their mountain
early for The Summit Foundation’s guests.
Paula Gonzales, Tara Sharp, and Gretchen Scanlon are pleased to be opening a new shelter for clients of Advocates of
Lake County.
Nonprofit Profile
Advocates of Lake County
The Advocates of Lake County has been assisting survivors of violence since
1983. We provide support and assistance to victims of domestic violence,
sexual assault, and stalking as well as other violent crimes. Our agency is
the only program in Lake County that offers victim assistance. Our trained
staff provides emergency and/or support services to victims, including crisis
intervention, emergency food and shelter, court advocacy, 24/7 emergency
hotline, referrals, and information services.
With an initial grant of $50,000 from El Pomar Foundation, The Advocates of
Lake County began a capital campaign to fund a crisis shelter in Lake County.
Since then, our agency has raised over $206,000 of our $400,000 goal.
We recently found the perfect property for our Family Crisis Center and a
major grant of $150,000 from Freeport McMoRan is allowing us to move
forward quickly to close on the purchase of the future Family Crisis Center.
The property is a large partially-built house and the construction will need to
be finished. Once completed, this property will be a four bedroom house to
be used for clients and their families. It will also allow us to move our current
offices and programs to the building, as well as expand and add new programs.
Our agency currently offers emergency shelter to our clients with a stay of four
nights, in the form of a hotel stay. During busy times, it is difficult to find
vacancies in the local hotels and sometimes victims must leave the area to find
safety. The short stays have not allowed many of our victims to gain the support
and knowledge to leave a violent home. Also, hotel stays offer a host of problems
including isolation, cost, security, and confidentiality. Once the Family Crisis
Center is operational, our agency could extend the average stay from four nights
to 30 nights, offer greater access to services, and minimize security and
confidentiality issues. Extending the time a victim can be in shelter will allow
them a greater chance to find employment, safe housing, access to services,
and thus increase the chance for victims to build a healthy and safe home.
Keep an eye out for our summer fundraisers on June 17th and July 1st, 2011.
We continue to seek financial donations, as well as donations of construction
materials, tile, paint, flooring, and furnishings for the building. Volunteers, grab
your hard hats we are always looking for more help. For more information on
how you can donate to this worthy cause, contact Gretchen Scanlon at
719.486.3530 or gretchen@advocatesoflakecounty.com.
In partnership with The Anschutz Foundation, The Summit Foundation has
awarded more than $37,000 in grants to Advocates of Lake County since 2007.
The Summit Foundation | Summer 2011
The Summit Foundation Welcomes a New Team Member
Jennifer Stein: Events and Marketing Coordinator
A 14-year resident of Summit County, Jennifer Stein has joined The Summit
Foundation as Events and Marketing Coordinator. Jennifer spent the past
year and half as Event Coordinator at High Country Conservation Center (HC3)
and as Communications Coordinator for the Continental Divide Land Trust.
In addition, Jennifer has also been attending the University of Denver
completing a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems and working on
a Masters in Environmental Policy and Management.
Jennifer moved to Summit County in 1997 and has worked in multiple
positions throughout the community. The majority of her time has been spent
as Assistant Manager at Carvers Ski Shop in Breckenridge. The variable
pace environment and expected high quality of customer service allowed
Jennifer to perfect her customer service skills and develop a passion for
assisting customers and creating meaningful client interactions.
During her time with High Country Conservation Center, Jennifer learned
the variable traits of nonprofit jobs. She ran all administrative office duties,
while planning annual events, maintaining HC3’s retail space, coordinating
volunteers, creating advertising media, and implementing new fundraising
plans. Jennifer’s time at HC3 grew her relationships with County and
municipal governments, local businesses, and other community nonprofits.
These new relationships gave her an expanded appreciation for the
amount of people working to improve life in Summit County. She is very
excited to join The Summit Foundation and increase her role in supporting
all those working to create better quality of life in our community.
Help The Summit Foundation Drop 10,000 Ducks
into Blue River on September 3rd, 2011
Saturday, September 3, 2011 will bring thousands of people to Breckenridge
to join in the family friendly activities at The Summit Foundation’s 24th
Annual Great Rubber Duck Race. Thanks to Grand Lodge on Peak 7 for its
Title Sponsorship of this year’s event.
Sponsored by Pinnacle Mountain Homes, the Kids Duck Dash will commence
at 1 p.m. as ducks are dropped from Adams Street Bridge into the Blue
River toward their finish at the Riverwalk Center. Peak-A-Boo Toys will be
generously contributing prizes for the winners of the Kids Duck Dash. The
First Bank of Summit County Business Battle Duck Race will follow at 2 p.m.
And finally, with your support, The Great Rubber Duck Race will send
more than 10,000 little rubber ducks racing from Main Street Station
towards the finish line at the Riverwalk Center.
The Summit Foundation staff is thrilled to have Jennifer as part of their
team and appreciative of the contacts, experience, and creativity she brings.
Please be sure to introduce yourself to Jennifer at one of our events
this summer.
You can adopt ducks online at summitfoundation.org or various locations
throughout the county during the month of August and early September.
Thousands of dollars in prizes will be awarded to the winning ducks...
and even to the slowest duck.
This event would not be possible without the huge support of the community,
donors, sponsors, volunteers, board members, and staff. Prize donations,
sponsorship, and volunteers are still welcome to help The Foundation exceed
its fundraising goals for this annual event.
If you are interested in volunteering to sell ducks anytime during the month of
August and the first week of September, or with volunteering the day of the
race and/or sorting the ducks on Sunday thereafter, call us at 970.453.5970
or email us at tsfevents@summitfoundation.org.
Board of Trustee Profile
Alex Iskenderian
Alex has served on The Summit Foundation Board
of Trustees since 2009 and calls it “Without
question, one of the most rewarding experiences
I’ve been a part of. All of the folks involved with The
Foundation are so committed and passionate about
what they do—and that passion is infectious.”
The most meaningful part of serving for Alex?
Being able to see first-hand the tangible
difference The Summit Foundation has for every
person who call Summit County home.
“Having the opportunity to meet some of the
recipients of The Foundation’s contributions is
what drives home the significance of what we do.”
Growing up in Virginia, Alex lit out for the west in
1988, and has been in Colorado ever since. He
and his wife Julie moved to the Vail Valley in 1997
where his tenure with Vail Resorts began. From
1997 to 2003, Alex served as Vice President and
General Counsel of Vail Resorts Development
Company (VRDC). In that position, Alex had the
pleasure of contributing to such extraordinary Vail
Valley resorts like Beaver Creek Village, Bachelor
Gulch Village, and Red Sky Ranch and Golf Club.
Alex and his family moved to Breckenridge in 2003,
where Alex oversaw development of the Peak 7 and
Peak 8 areas at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Alex
currently serves as Sr. Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer of VRDC. As a 14-year Vail
Resorts employee, Alex is a leader for Vail Resorts
Echo, the company’s sustainability program that
encompasses environmental stewardship initiatives,
charitable giving, and community engagement.
Through Vail Resorts Echo, Alex and other local
company leadership work to fund critical needs for
nonprofit organizations including an extensive
relationship with The Summit Foundation.
Alex serves on a number of nonprofit and
charitable boards in both Summit and Eagle
counties. He and his wife Julie, and their three
children, Bryn, 10, Nicholas, 10, and Evan, 8,
enjoy the mountain lifestyle and all it has to offer.
Taxes, Trusts, and Truth
Is your estate planning what you think it is in light of the new tax law?
In a follow-up to The Peaks Society of The Summit Foundation’s September 2010
workshop on family wealth management and philanthropy, Eide Bailly’s Tax Senior
Manager PJ Kovach will explore with The Summit Foundation’s donors and
professional advisors the ‘new’ estate tax and its impact on current planning.
On December 17, 2010, the President signed into law a temporary patch that affords
new opportunities, adds some confusion, and leaves us with uncertainty. Join us Friday,
June 17th, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center for a discussion
of the law, its implications, and the uncertainty surrounding permanent legislation.
This event should be of interest to professional advisors and their clients,
donors, as well as anyone faced with the interconnected challenges of estate
and philanthropic planning. To RSVP, or to learn more about the workshop,
contact Kasey Geoghegan at kasey@summitfoundation.org or 970.453.5970.
Mountain Art Gathering
Returning to Keystone for its 13th and Final Year
A classic art show featuring 11 of America’s leading artists as well as five local high
school student artists, Mountain Art Gathering returns for its 13th Anniversary
July 21st to July 23rd to benefit The Summit Foundation. This year’s Mountain Art
Gathering will be a unique culmination of inspirational art, collectors, mentors,
volunteers, artists, and patrons through which 20 percent of all art sales will be
donated to The Summit Foundation by the artists.
Assembled from around the country, the featured artists include: The Founders,
comprised of B.J. Briner, Doyle Goebel, Phil Poirier, and Doug Ricketts; and their
Guests: Roy Brown, Chris Dahl-Bredine, Jared and Nicole Davis, Robert Deurloo,
Lona Hymas-Smith, Jean Latka and Tom Latka, and Maria Samora.
Following a tradition begun three years ago, five students from Summit High School
have been selected to share their art at this year’s show. The students include
three photographers, L’amour Johnson, Jacqueline Las, and Patrick Paden; and two
ceramicists, Christine Fernandez and Mario Zuany.
In the months leading up to the show, the students are being mentored by local
Summit County Artists, Photographer Bob Winsett and Breckenridge Arts District’s
Jen Cram and Maria Chambers (ceramicist).
The event will open with an Artist’s reception on Thursday evening July 21st and
Friday evening July 22nd will feature a live auction with elegant appetizers. The
Gatherers and each of the guest artists will each donate a special piece of artwork
for the live auction, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting The Summit
Foundation. Guests may attend either evening receptions for $30 per person or
$50 per person for both nights. In addition, the show will be free and open to
the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday July 22nd and Saturday July 23rd.
Call The Summit Foundation to obtain tickets for the evening events.
