Printed and mailed by OfficeMax (480) 921-1581.Articles are written by Chamber Staff.Summertime is definitely upon us. Kids are out ofschool, people are taking long weekends to escapethe Valley’s heat, and, for those of us who are working, the freeways tend to be just a little less crowded thanother times of the year. Remember when summervacation meant nine weeks out of school rather than aweek of hectic hurrying to get things ready to enjoy aweek’s vacation somewhere with the kids followed byanother week of catch up because you were gone? The business of doing business is a full-time, year-round commitment at theTempe Chamber and I am truly honored to be your Chairman for the coming year. This summer is especially busy because we have so many new things comingtogether.Debuting our new web site with improved features atwww.tempechamber.orgInstalling new computers for the Chamber staff.Hiring a new Vice President of Special Events – Welcome Kari Sliva!Endorsing candidates for the state’s primary election.Formulating the new local and state legislative agendas.Starting two great new committees: the Business Resource Advantage andthe Business to Business Connections. (See our calendar on page 6 formeeting dates and times.)Earlier this year the incoming Board of Directors and the new CommitteeChairs spent an entire day together learning both from each other and fromexperts on the important issues that make business in Tempe unique. I was veryimpressed and delighted by the enthusiasm and commitment that characterizesthis group. I know that we all feel a tremendous responsibility to assist our fellowmembers in making the Tempe Chamber’s centennial year one of the best ever.As we look at a year in which various areas of the economy may continueto face significant challenges and where our state’s budget is operating at atremendous deficit level, we know as business people we will be called upon tomake some tough choices. I am confident that the Chamber will continue to bea great resource for all of us and encourage everyone to participate and use themember benefits that best suit your needs.Since we can’t take the whole summer off like we did when we were kids, takea few minutes and eat an ice cream cone outside – it sure brings back thememories!Have a great summer,Marilyn JoyceChairmanTempe Chamber of CommerceChamber New Year Means Business2August 2008 : Business Advocate
