MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF HEALTHSERVICESThe concept <strong>of</strong> Essential Medicines can be traced back to the Non‐AlignedSummit Conference held in Sri Lanka in 1976. The conference adopted aspecial resolution on drugs, which included the idea that a <strong>list</strong> <strong>of</strong> the mostEssential Medicines be compiled. The <strong>World</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Organizationpublished its first <strong>list</strong> in 1977.This is the fourth revision <strong>of</strong> the Essential Medicines List which was firstpublished in 1985 and it is aimed at supplying safe, effective drugs <strong>of</strong>acceptable quality to the people <strong>of</strong> Sri Lanka at affordable prices.We are grateful to expert committee involved in the compilation <strong>of</strong> the<strong>list</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>medicines</strong> for the valuable inputs made by members and to the<strong>World</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Organization (WHO) for the financial assistance providedfor printing this booklet.I would gladly welcome comments on any shortcomings in thisdocument which could be made use to improve the next revision.Dr. U.A.
