The Inn of the HillsResort and Conference Center in Kerrville will be thesite of this year’s convention which will be onThursday, November 4; Friday, November 5; andSaturday November 6, 2010. As many of you know,the hotel offers us a spacious showroom and we hopeyou will all bring lots of plants to enter as well asdesigns. We will also have lots of space in theCommercial Sales Room so be preparing your list ofmust haves. The hotel provided us the same room ratesas last year. Also you can get a half price rate eachnight if you come Oct. 31-Nov. 2 or stay Nov. 7-9.First AVS of Wichita Falls is again honoring MaryWalbrick with an award for best educational display.Space for these tables is limited so return theappropriate form in this newsletter as soon aspossible. Don’t forget to enter your plants in thePittman Collection class. This award is open to bothamateur and commercial members, so plan onentering your best Pittman plants. May be up to 18inches in depth.Class 69.“East Texas Piney Woods.” Travel to the eastern part of Texas reveals a lush woodland treasure, so different from thelovely vast arid areas of West Texas. This design is a foliage only design and will suggest the green treasuresof East Texas. Non-blooming African violet (s) only will be used in this design. Limit 6Class 70. “A Day’s Labor.” A Texas treasure often overlooked is the hard working farmer. Agriculture is a major contributor tothe Texas economy. This design is meant to honor the labor and production of the Texas farmer. Limit 6- 6 -

Dried, treated or colored plant material plus man-made material (other than artificial plant material)may be used. Accessories, backdrops and draping are optional.Standard Arrangements:Class 71.“Texas Black Gold.” A true Texas treasure is its supply of oil and natural gas. These energy sources help to fuelTexas and the world. Create a design that suggests one of these Texas natural energy sources. To be staged inwhite niches, 24” high, 20” wide and 14” deep. May be up to 18 inches in depth. Limit 6Class 72. “Texas Cowboy.” The cowboy is both a mythical and realistic Texas treasure. Literature abounds with talesof his rugged spirit. The vast ranchlands and their productivity serve as testimonials to the cowboy’scontributions to the Texas economy. The image of the Texas cowboy (or cowgirl) will be seen in this design.To be staged in white niches, 20” high, 15” wide, and 7 ½” deep. May be up to 18 inches in depth. Limit 6.Underwater Arrangement: Arrangement completely submerged in water. Backdrops and pedestals arepermitted. To be staged in niches 24” high, 20” wide and 14” deepClass 73. “South Padre Island.” The beautiful Gulf shores are definitely examples of Texas treasures. South PadreIsland is a favorite vacation spot for swimming and shell collecting. Incorporate your favorite beach activity inthis underwater design. Limit 6Small Flower Arrangements: Arrangement not to exceed eight (8) inches in its greatest overall dimension.To be staged in 10” x 10” x 10” white niches that are placed on a 12” riser. Drapes and/or underlay arepermitted.Class 74. “ Sweet, Spicy, Cold, or Hot”. One cannot visit any Texas city, town, or ‘wide spot in the road’ withoutdiscussion of the local food offerings. The Texas culinary treasures vary widely from location to location.Show a favorite Texas food. Limit 6.Class 75. “Texas Wildflowers.” A list of Texas treasures certainly includes the bountiful wildflowers that so boldlycolor our roadsides, prairies, deserts, and woodlands. This colorful flower arrangement showcases the manyvibrant hues of our Texas wildflowers. Limit 6.Flower Arrangements: To be staged in white niches 8” x 8” x 8”/Class 76. “In a Nutshell.” Our state tree, the pecan tree, is truly a Texas treasure. Groves of the stately trees are seen inmany parts of the state. Pecan growers grow and export the delicious nut to all parts of the world. Use a pecanor a portion of a pecan somewhere in your design. Limit 6.SECTION XVII. Container Gardens: Miniature gardens with one or more blooming African Violets and other growingplants. All plants should be planted in the container and no cut material is permitted. Accessories arepermitted. Designs will be displayed on open tables.Terrarium:- A miniature garden in a covered transparent container. No mirrored terrariums are permitted.To be viewed from the front only. Not to exceed 24” in its greatest dimension.Class 77. “Big Thicket”. The Big Thicket was the first national preserve in the National Park system. Ten differentecosystems within this preserve give it some of the richest biodiversity in North America. It is an uniquecombination of pine and cypress forests, hardwood forests, meadows, black water swamps and all thecreatures that dwell within these varied habitats. Create a scene showing what might be seen in this Texastreasure. Limit 6.Dish Garden: - A miniature garden in a shallow, dish-like container.Large Dish Garden - Not to exceed 24” in width or depth.Class 78. “Edwards Aquifer.” The Edwards Aquifer is one of the major groundwater systems in Texas, and is one ofthe most prolific aquifers in the world. The underground layer of porous rock is water laden and is coveredwith rolling hills of oak and cedar. Natural springs emerge at various places. These springs, true Texastreasures, serve as sources of drinking water and places of beauty and recreation. Give your interpretation ofthe natural springs of the Edwards Aquifer. Limit 6.- 7 -


Convention Issue, September, 2010 LSAVC Newsletter Volume XXV, No. 5Small Dish Garden - -Not to exceed 12” in width or depth.Class 79. “Winding Country Roads”. .” Many Texans love to discover ‘out of the way’ treasures. A specialafternoon may include a slow scenic drive along a secluded ranch or country road. This small dish garden willsuggest a favorite Texas winding road. Limit 6Natural Garden: –A miniature garden in natural materials such as driftwood or rock. May have one or moreplanting areas or pockets. Not to exceed 24” in width or depth.Class 80. “Hidden Caverns.” Texas abounds with ‘show’ caverns like the Longhorn, Natural Bridge, or the CascadeCaverns. But, because of the incredible geography of the state, ‘hidden’ or ‘wild’ caves abound also. Thesetreasures can be found on ranchlands, prairies, or woodlands. Show how a hidden cavern might look. Limit 6.DIVISON III - SPECIAL EXHIBITSSECTION XVIII. Education and AVSA Information ExhibitsClass 81. Education (by registration – limit 6) In Honor of Mary WalbrickClass 82. AVSA Information (by invitation)GENERAL RULES OF THE SHOWENTRIES1. All horticulture and design entries must be received between 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday,November 4, 2010. Workers’ plants should be entered between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4. Any entryarriving late will be marked “For Exhibition Only” and may not be judged.2. Design entries may be completed between 7:00 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010. Design entries must beapproved by the Design Classification Chairman no later than 8:00 a.m. November 5, 2010.3. Entries will be accepted only from members of LSAVC who are registered with this convention.4. An entry form will be provided to each exhibitor on which to list their entries for both horticulture and design. This form will besent to the exhibitor upon receipt of registration for the LSAVC convention. Individual AVSA entry cards will be provided atEntries & Classification.5. An exhibit may not be altered or removed (except to replace blooms in a design) until the show is closed. Design blossoms maybe replaced between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday November 6, 2010.6. Only clean, healthy plants will be accepted and all horticulture entries must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for atleast 90 days prior to the show.7. All African Violet exhibits must be in bloom. Gesneriads, other than African Violets, may be entered for Ornamental Foliageonly in classes 64, 65, 67, and 68.8. No double potting, flared-top pots, supports or collars under foliage will be permitted. All pots must be slip potted into cleanwhite pots of the same size. The inner pot must be covered with plastic or foil to prevent leaks onto the table. Inner pots may beof any color and may extend above the rim of the outside pot. Exceptions to slip potting are white self-contained reservoirs,such as Oyama or Moist-Rite, unusual containers, trailers, hanging baskets and other Gesneriads.9. Exhibits may be sold after the show opens, but may not be removed until Saturday, November 6 at 4:30 p.m. (LSAVC membersmay not remove purchased plants until after the banquet dinner.)10. All exhibits must be removed from the show room within two hours of the end of the awards banquet on Sat., November 6, 2010.CLASSIFICATION11. Each variety must be correctly named or be subject to correction by the Classification Committee.12. All entries will be classified according to the latest First Class, AVSA Master Variety List, Supplements or Hybridizer’s lists. Acultivar does not have to be listed to be entered in the show.13. Violets with two-tone blossoms are to be entered in the regular color classes of that color (example: two-tone pink goes in thepink class).14. Streptocarpus specimens will be entered in appropriate color classes (61, 62, 63) by predominate color.- 8 -

Only qualified AVSA Judges will be permitted to judge, using the AVSA scale ofpoints applicable to each class. Decisions of judges are final, unless in conflict with the show schedule or AVSA rules. Judgesand clerks will assemble at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010 for instructions. The judging will follow immediately andwill continue until finished.16. The only persons allowed in the show area during judging will be the Judges, Show Chairman, Judges Chairman, Clerks,Awards Chairman and Classification Chairman or their representatives.17. Ribbons and special awards will be given according to the scale of points in the latest AVSA Judges Handbook.18. Only blue ribbon exhibits will be eligible to receive AVSA or other special awards.19. Awards of merit may be given by the judges upon request.HORTICULTURE DIVISION20. An exhibitor may enter only one plant of a variety in any one class.21. All African Violets must be single crown varieties with the exception of trailers, or species.22. Any number of seedlings may be entered, provided they have been originated by the exhibitor, or the exhibitor must havepermission or release of rights in writing from the hybridizer. Entries must not have been previously shown in an LSAVCshow.23. Only persons who have not previously received a blue ribbon in horticulture in an AVSA judged show may enter Class 48,Novice.24. Exhibits or entries in the African Violet in Unusual Container Section (Classes 55 and 56) must be of show quality. Thecontainer is to reflect the theme of the show; only one (1) entry per class for each exhibitor.25. Gesneriads other than African Violets(Section XIV) may be exhibited in an open or closed environment and will be tabledisplayed.26. Vintage specimens (Class 53) can be any African Violet that has been hybridized over 25 years ago. MVL or dated hybridizerslist must be furnished by the exhibitor to verify the variety’s age.27. LSAVC will afford all possible protection to exhibits, but will not be responsible for any damages or losses.COLLECTIONS28. AVSA Collections – Class 1 and 6 must be a collection of three (3) different AVSA registered standard varieties of the sametype, three (3) single crown or three (3) trailers of the same type. Classes 2 and 7 must be a collection of three (3) differentAVSA registered, semiminiatures or miniatures of the same type, three (3) single crown or three (3) trailers of the same type.Classes 3 and 8 must be a collection of three (3) different species of any type.Only AVSA amateur members in good standing are eligible to enter Classes 1, 2 and 3 and only AVSA commercial members ingood standing are eligible to enter Classes 6, 7 and 8. Be prepared to present a current AVSA membership card. Registrationnumber or ID for species of each specimen must appear beside the name of the cultivar on the entry form.29. LSAVC Collections – Class 4 and 9 must be a collection of three (3) different Texas hybridized standard varieties of the sametype, three (3) single crown or three (3) trailers. Classes 5 and 10 must be a collection of three (3) different Texas hybridizedsemiminiatures or miniatures of the same type, three (3) single crown or three (3) trailers of the same type.Only LSAVC amateur members in good standing may enter Classes 4 and 5 and only LSAVC exhibitors who are AVSAcommercial members in good standing may enter Classes 9 and 10. Name of the Texas hybridizer must appear beside the nameof the cultivar on the entry form.30. All specimens in Classes, 4, 5, 9 and 10 (LSAVC Collections) and Classes 49, 50, 51, 52, 66, 67 and 68 (Texas hybridized) mustbe Texas hybridized plants appearing in a published list or hybridizer’s list. Write the name of the hybridizer beside the name ofthe cultivar on entry form.31. Any entry in a collection class, receiving a blue ribbon, is eligible for other special awards.32. Only one (1) collection may be entered by an exhibitor in each collection class. Commercial members may exhibit in all classesexcept the Amateur Collection Classes (Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Amateur members may exhibit in all classes except CommercialCollection Classes (Class 6, 7, 8 9 and 10).33. The Pittman Collection (Class 11) will be any 3 different semiminiature, any 3 different miniature or any 3 different trailers, thatwere hybridized by Hortense Pittman and may be exhibited by either an amateur or commercial member in good standing ofLSAVC, to be eligible for the Pittman Collection award.- 9 -

No telephone requests will beaccepted. All reservations will be accepted beginning on October 1 st via US mail or email. Please include both the title of thedesign and the class number. Reservations will continue to be accepted until October 29 th or until classes are filled.35. An Exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired but will be limited to one entry per class.36. A 3” x 5” card must accompany each design entry, containing the name of the African Violet varieties and names of the othermaterial used, if known. A second 3” x 5” card, used for the interpretation of the design by the exhibitor, is optional.37. Materials, plants and blossoms need not have been grown by the exhibitor, but the entry must be the work of the exhibitor.38. Use of the American Flag, state flags, flags from other nations, plants on the endangered list from any state or nation, artificialplant material, or live creatures shall not be used in any design division exhibit.39. African Violets must be used in all classes except where indicated.40. Exhibitors must construct designs before coming to the show area.41. Accessories, backdrops and draping are optional except as noted.42. In the Underwater Flower arrangement class, the use of pedestal base or backdrop/draping will be allowed.43 . No part of any design may extend beyond the confines of the niche except the depth when stated in class description.44.
