About MeHi, my name is Talia Rosenthal. I am agraphic designer from London. Up untilnow, I have been studying GraphicDesign at London Metropolitan University. This is my portfolio. This also gives you an insight in to howI work, not just delivering spectacularideas. All the work shown here is part of myuniversity projects as well as somefreelance work that I have done on theside whilst studying. It is important tomake contacts in the industry and topractice as much as possible as thereare always new techniques and technology.I have hand-picked some of my favouriteand most successful projects hereand have also included some sketchesand images of my creative process. The work is important but the creativeprocess that goes along with final ideais what makes the end result so good.5

Work experience at6Wall ArtAppstractor Corporation is the home for next generation Business Intelligence,Search and Inbound Marketing tools. They have offices in the U.K., U.S.A.,Israel and Nepal. The Israel office is the original office and headquarters. Idid work experience in the Israel office for 10 days in April. The office had justbeen renovated and I noticed the walls were quite bare. I offered to do someart work for the walls. I wanted to merge the idea of different time-zones withthe company’s offices. I also wanted something elegant to fit in with the office’stheme. I chose to use watercolours as they look very elegant on a wall and Ipaired it with the colours red and blue to match the interiors of the office.

Company CalendarAppstractor has many employees in various offices around the world. I createda company calendar to make is visually easy to see what holidays and religiousfestivals were coming up in each of the countries where Appstractor had an office.I created a year view calendar to ensure all the months are on one <strong>page</strong>.On the days that had an event, I constructed a colour-code system for eachcountry to make it easier to see where the event is. I also added staff birthdays.Cloud LogoI designed this logo for the Proxy ServerCloud service. The Proxy ServerCloud is used to anonymously scrapewebsites at warp speed. Anyone canconnect their software to the cloudand it can run projects and send querieswhile hiding your identity. (In alegitimate way).I researched what other companieslogos looked like for similar softwareand kept in tune with that in order forpeople to recognise what this softwareis. I made sure the logo was simpleand classic also bared a resemblanceto other clouds’ logos but also differentenough to make this one stand outagainst the others. I drew many differentcloud shapes but I didn’t want tohave a complete cloud because that’swhat everyone else has, so I decidedon this shape that looks like a cloudand blends well with the font.7

Textile Print RedesignWork experience at8In July 2014, I did a month-long internshipat Select Fashion in their headquartersin Kentish Town.Select Fashion is a well known ‘value’ladies retailer. They sell fashionableladies clothes and accessories andlow prices. They are one of the onlyhigh street brands that are not ownedby Arcadia Group. Select Fashion isactually owned by a Turkish investornamed Cafer Mahiroglu and GenusUK Ltd.These jacquard and velvet black leopardprint trousers are from the A/W14/15 range. However, if you look abit closer, you can see the print looksmore like animal print not specificallyleopard.I was asked to redesign this print tomake it look more like a leopard. Iused Adobe Illustrator for this, andlearned how to duplicate my design tomake a seamless tile print.

CAD DrawingThese are CAD drawings of a teadress. The first one (top left) is the originaldesign that Select Fashion werealready selling in their shops. It wasa successful dress so I designed somemore patterns with keeping the sameshape and material of the dress. Iscanned in some samples of fabric thatwas going to be used for the Spring/Summer 14/15 Collection and usedthese to create new tiled designs.California Vests:I drew these CAD drawings of the Spring/Summer 14/15 Collection usingAdobe Illustrator. The vests feature a split back, zip as well as a dip hem.9

Mini Case StudyDuring my time working at Select Fashion, bodycon scuba dresses and sloganswere very much in style and forecasted to be extremely fashionable in the fashionyear of 14/15.Work experience at10I brainstormed some ideas for slogans for t-shirts and for this dress in particular.I started off my writing some ideas down in my notebook and then rewrote thebest ones on Illustrator in ‘Impact’ font. I found that this font was great for slogansand short phrases because it is bold and is very readable.I then sketched out the dress from the brief on Adobe Illustrator (below left)and used a clipping mask to place the words on the dress, curving the lettersalong the panel to see how it would look in real life. This sketch was given thefactory as a CAD to work off. However, a problem in production occurredwhen Topshop started selling a very similar dress in their stores. (Picture of thisdress below right).

Slogan T-ShirtsThis is an example of a slogan T-shirt.(Right).This particular slogan is a phrase fromthe movie ‘Mean Girls’.Case Study selectI took this idea further and used oneof my favourite quotes from the movieand created a few different designideas from that. The quote is “On Wednesdays wewear pink”. I used a similar font tothe one on the original t-shirt so that itlooked similar but not the same. I wantedto keep in with the style of SelectFashion. These 3 designs are examplesof the designs I came up with for theA/W 14/15 line. After designing, I gave the designs tothe bosses for proofing, these werethen given to the factory to be produced.I learnt how to draw on different layerson Illustrator and how to make theT-shirts look realistic with crease linesand rough edges to give it effect.11

Freelance13

I did some freelance work for aMilkshake cafe, called ‘The ShakeLounge’. They are based in Finchley.I used to go there with my friendswhen I lived in Finchley. One day, Iapproached the boss and asked himif I could redesign the menus, and heagreed.Print - Menus14This is what the old menu looked like. It wasvery big and busy. No alignment used forthe typography, no colour and quite plain.SmoothiesThis menu is double-sided with smoothieson one side and shakes on theother. I spaced out the smoothies alot more to make it clearer to read asthere is a lot of information. I used achalk-like font to mimic the logo. Thebackground is clean and simple.

Shakes Cold Drinks Hot DrinksThe old menu was quite crowded, so Ilaid out the information in a clear conciseway. I grouped Thick Shakes separatelyto the Cookie/Chocolate Shakeswith an image of an example of eachnext to them in the background tomake it evident.Cold Drinks Menu is also paired withthe Hot Drinks on the other side. I useda white panel to differentiate the juicesfrom the ice coffees and teas in orderto make it clearer to the viewer. I alsoput one of each drink on this menu socustomers can choose what they want.I used the same font to keep the styleacross all 4 menus. I kept this menuquite simple. The client wanted thismenu to be black and white for anelegant feel. I kept this in mind whendesigning and used the same font tolink it with the previous menus.15

Digital - Apps16Make Up Match Up AppI found a gap in the beauty market and decided to develop an idea foran app as a university project. The idea was to have a mobile app thatcan compare make up foundation colours either by taking a close-upimage of your skin or by finding your current shade and comparing itautomatically to other brands, without the user having to physically testout all the colours themselves. These designs are an idea of what my app could look like. Boots No7use similar technology by photographing the face in two different placesand taking an average. Skin is different colours on different parts ofthe face, making the process harder to match, this app could eliminatethat. I am currently in the development stage of this app design idea.Jewgle was another app idThe brief was to design an app to do with Locame up with the idea of an app to find Jewkosher restaurants in London. It also has an euser can easily find out wThis is a search app that’s also multi-functiona spin-off ‘Google’. Jewgle also has a g<strong>page</strong> where the user can filter by ‘dairy’ ocause all kosher restaurants are either dairymixing them. This filter filters by price, lo*K

Jewgle Appea I had while at university.ndon but also my heritage. Iish schools, synagogues andvents <strong>page</strong> and news so thehat’s going on around them.al, hence its name ‘Jewgle’,reat filter for the restaurantsr ‘meat’, this filter is here beormeat, as kosher forbidscation, and ‘Kashrut’ level*.ashrut is the level of Kosher. 17

Exhibitions19

My exhibition at JW320

Incubator ProjectThe Union of Jewish Students askedme to curate an exhibition called ‘Israelthrough the eyes of young Jewishartists’. The medium I chose to use wasphotography. My idea was to use existing imagesfrom my phone to show others whatI saw through my own camera lense-- without filters. The images I usedwere taken over a long period of time,at many different places in Israel. Iphotographed things that caught myeye, inspired me and fascinated me. Ienlarged these pictures to A3 size andlaid them out in the style of the Starof David. Under each image I had anannotation about the picture. My project won a certificate and wasthe only one that got sold!My certificate presented to me byJane McAdam Freud, daughter ofLucien Freud.21
