Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the
scenes at an animal shelter? The HSJC is filled with a
steady hum of activity as we go about the business of
providing daily care for a multitude of pets. It takes a
great deal of work to ensure that the animals receive the
highest level of comfort and care. Each day can bring a
variety of interesting new challenges and emergency
situations occur with regularity. The following is an
overview of a typical day at the Humane Society of
Jefferson County.
At 8:00 a.m. the dogs
are given their first potty
break of the day. Their
kennels are cleared of all
bedding, toys and bowls,
and are then cleaned,
rinsed, disinfected and
dried. Clean bedding and
toys are placed in the
kennels along with fresh
food and water bowls.
After eating their
breakfast, each dog is
taken for a leash walk or
put in one of the outdoor
play yards for some fun
and exercise. The outdoor
dog runs are cleaned in the morning as well. There are
24 dog kennels at the shelter, so the pace is brisk as these
tasks are completed.
Meanwhile, other staff members are cleaning the 65
cat cages. Just as with the dog kennels, each cage is
cleared, scrubbed and disinfected. New bedding, litter
boxes, toys and bowls are provided for each cat. The
cages of small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets
and birds are cleaned and restocked with food and water.

needed. Staff administers vaccinations, medications and
dewormers. They also draw blood samples for
heartworm and feline leukemia/FIV tests. Animals who
are ill or injured receive antibiotics or other medications
specific to their ailment.
The above chores are completed before noon each
day, along with laundry, dishes, taking out garbage and
answering the telephones, which never seem to stop
ringing. It’s very clear why we’re so grateful to the
volunteers who lend a
helping hand!

People call or visit with
questions about available
animals and to receive
information about the
adoption process. Some
need advice about their
pet’s health or behavior,
and others file reports for
lost or found animals.
Some folks rent a live trap
to catch a stray, which is a
practice we always
encourage. Others stop in
with donations – also a
practice we always encourage, and greatly appreciate!
In the back rooms, the animal caregivers continue to
deal with the never ending piles of laundry. They are
walking dogs, unloading deliveries of supplies, working
with shy or timid animals and bathing or shaving others.
Throughout the day caregivers spot clean cages and
kennels and closely monitor the animals for their health
and safety. They assist visitors in meeting adoptable pets
and discuss each animal’s personality and needs.
Afternoons are playtime for our canine residents, and

“BONE-I-FIED” ADVICE FROM BEN
Dear Ben,
I live in a semi-rural part of Jefferson County and am sad to see so many stray
cats in the area. As an animal lover, I know that I should catch these poor
creatures in a humane “live” trap and have them spayed or neutered. My vet is
fantastic but the price for the surgeries is just too high for me to afford. I’ve
also finally convinced my neighbor that his dog should be neutered, but the cost
is preventing him from following through. Is there an economical alternative
that will allow me to help these unfortunate cats and also help my neighbor to
be a responsible pet owner? ~ Strapped in Sullivan
Dear Strapped,
Spaying and neutering is the only way to help control the pet overpopulation problem, so a hearty wag of the tail to
you for wanting to be part of the solution. Congratulations, too, on inspiring your neighbor to make a conscientious
decision concerning his pet. Did you inform him that his dog will likely lead a longer and healthier life, and be less
of a nuisance to his neighbors, after being neutered? While the HSJC spays or neuters adoptable dogs and cats, we are
unable to offer these services to the general public. However, there are several low cost spay/neuter clinics in the
area. The affordability of surgeries at these clinics makes it easier to do the right thing by spaying or neutering stray
and feral animals, as well as beloved pets. Contact the shelter at 920-674-2048 for more information, and keep on

staff joins each in a game of fetch or a vigorous jog. A good pair of feet
is essential for these staff members, because they are on them all day
long!
At various intervals stray animals arrive at the shelter. If a Good
Samaritan does not bring the animal in, a staff member drives to the
location and picks the animal up. New arrivals are checked for microchips,
assessed for injury or illness, and vaccinated. They are then made
comfortable in a clean cage with fresh bedding, clean water and food.
Because the building that houses the HSJC is over 40 years old, the
staff faces the additional challenge of working in an infrastructure that
is becoming more and more outdated. Although we are moving in the
direction of a new shelter, for the time being we endeavor to provide the
best possible care in quarters that are increasingly cramped and inadequate.
A good time was had by all, with a lot
of dancing, a live band, food, drinks,
contests and a silent and live auction.
After all was said and done, the event
brought in $24,000 to help care for
the animals at HSJC. Thank you to all
who helped to make this event such a
huge success!

HSJC offers stray animal pickup 24/7.

Beginning at 4:00 p.m., the animals are fed their dinners. Dogs are taken for their last outdoor potty break of the
day. Every animal is checked to ensure that they are settled in and cozy. Furry chins are scratched, soft ears are gently
fondled, and at 6:00 p.m. the day’s last treats are distributed.
The shelter offers 24 hour stray pick up, so the work day doesn’t end for the person on call. Staff will respond in
the middle of the night and drive many miles to pick up an animal in need and deliver it safely to the shelter. This can
be quite an experience, depending on the destination and the temperament of the animal, along with the predicament
it may be in. Crawling under porches, slogging through swamps or climbing up to roof rafters is all pretty much part
of the routine.
Donations from supporters are essential to our mission. These contributions support the enormous amount of
work that helps to ensure each animal enjoys a healthy and positive experience at the shelter. Our staff puts in very
long days and devotes a lot of energy to the pets in our care because it truly is a labor of love. After each exhausting
day, their dedication to animals inspires them to get up the next morning and, with a sense of accomplishment and
purpose, do it all over again.

A GREAT DEAL OF LOVE – AT A GREAT PRICE!
When you adopt a pet from the HSJC, you’re doing even
more than just bringing a loving new companion into your
home. You are also taking a stand against puppy mills and the
unscrupulous breeders who sell their “products” to pet stores.
So many wonderful animals are the innocent victims of
circumstance, and adoption is the best way to give them the
second chance they deserve.
A terrific bonus to adoption is that it makes much less of
a dent in your pocketbook. The cost of the necessary medical
procedures which a purchased (or even “free”) pet requires
is considerable, while the equivalent services are included
in the HSJC’s adoption prices. All dogs, cats, puppies and
kittens at the HSJC are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and dewormed.
Dogs are also tested for heartworm disease and are microchipped, while cats are tested for feline
leukemia and FIV. When you think about all that is included with an adopted animal and compare the cost of the
same services at a veterinary clinic, you’ll see a significant difference. In the southeastern Wisconsin area, that
difference can easily be in excess of $300.00!
Adoption is not only the most humane way to acquire a faithful animal companion, it’s also the most economic.
As for the love and loyalty that your pet will bring to your life – that’s priceless!

SECOND CHANCES
Ginny arrived at the HSJC as a stray during a bitter cold winter. This sweet
senior Schnauzer was very well mannered and never behaved as anything less
than a lady, even though she was in a great deal of pain due to severe dental
decay and infection. A compassionate shelter supporter responded to Ginny's
plight with incredible kindness, donating money toward her much needed
dental work. Hoping to give Ginny the best possible chance for a happy
ending, the HSJC contacted Miniature Schnauzer Rescue, one of the many
breed rescue groups who are devoted to finding great homes for unfortunate
dogs. Thanks in large part to one individual’s contribution, Ginny was soon on her way and began to
receive the oral veterinary care she so desperately needed. She has since been adopted and is comfortable, secure and
looking forward to a pain free future in her new home. If she could, Ginny would tell you that one person truly can
make a difference!
Three sick and thin cats were found packed inside a plastic cat carrier, abandoned
next to an outdoor trash receptacle. Each was frightened, frail and ill with upper
respiratory infections. They were whisked to the HSJC where they immediately
received nourishing food and medication and their dirty, matted coats were
shaved and bathed. The long haired grey tabby in this group was named Hopple
by his caregivers and he soon found a special place in their hearts. Although
he had endured so much suffering and his illness seemed to drag on and on, his
affectionate and loving personality never dimmed. Upon his eventual recovery
he was made available for adoption, and his great charm and attitude soon
helped him find his way into a caring and responsible home. Hopple's story
is only one of many, and it illustrates with heartbreaking clarity the open
hearted and forgiving nature of animals who have been neglected or abused.
BRETT
GINNY
HOPPLE
Brett was an emaciated Brittany Spaniel who was burdened with
aching joints and heartworm disease. When an animal is in such poor
physical condition, one can only wonder at the obvious lack of care
they received in their prior home. As a senior, his symptoms had
certainly been present for quite some time. How was it possible to
be unaware of or to ignore his suffering? Did no one feel any
emotional connection or obligation to this good natured and gentle
dog? As baffling and dismaying as these questions were, we were
happy at least to be able to aid in his recovery. Brett's future
remained worrisome, though, and despite his superb disposition,
finding him a great new home would be a challenge. He needed an
adopter who was not only ready to take on an older dog but also to accept
responsibility for a pet with some potentially serious medical issues. We never imagined that the ideal person would
appear so quickly but to our surprise and delight, he did! Brett now lives with an immensely caring owner and enjoys
playing with a friendly feline buddy. Daily medications and exercise have improved his health, but what really made
Brett feel like a puppy again was simply being loved. His adopter's devotion is apparent when he says that Brett is
"a treasure," but we know that this wonderful dog has found a priceless companion as well.

HJSC FINDS HELP WITH RINGWORM
“I’m no longer afraid of ringworm,” said Barb Rayno, shelter
manager at the Humane Society of Jefferson County (HSJC). “I
know what to do, and I have the right tools.”
But that wasn’t always the case. Last September, Rayno
recognized a couple of kittens with ringworm. They removed the
affected animals, but the disease continued to appear in more and
more cats. The shelter had no other alternative but to close the
cat area.
After many attempts to rid the shelter of ringworm, the
humane society’s veterinary advisor contacted Dr. Sandra
Newbury, adjunct assistant professor of shelter animal
medicine, and Dr. Karen Moriello, clinical professor of
dermatology at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine.
Together, the two doctors created a protocol to deal with
ringworm in a shelter environment.
“Ringworm can spread quickly in this environment,” explained Newbury,
whose primary appointment is veterinarian for National Shelter Medicine at the Koret Shelter
Medicine Program Center for Companion Animal Health at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. “It can
seem overwhelming, but if you use the system we have developed, it is very manageable. Unfortunately, ringworm is
very common and very misunderstood. Putting a treatment program into place can change the way a shelter manages
ringworm. And by instilling a preventative approach, it can be managed quite well.”
Previously, Drs. Newbury and Moriello had worked with Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) to create a control
program. Because of their efforts, DCHS became one of the country’s model shelters for managing ringworm. The
facility now includes a special area for the infected animals and has developed a team of experienced volunteers who
both diagnose animals with ringworm and help treat those affected animals.
The staff at the Humane Society of Jefferson County had taken some steps to reduce their ringworm problem, but
they didn’t know when or if they could control the outbreak. The holidays were fast approaching, a popular time for
people to adopt animals and this would not be possible if the adoptable cat area remained closed.
Dr. Newbury enlisted several Dane County Humane Society volunteers and traveled to Jefferson County to
implement DCHS’s ringworm protocol. They jumped in and showed Rayno the strategies developed for DCHS. She
learned how to perform a lime/sulfur dip and develop
a new cleaning process for cages. In the end, HSJC
was set up with a proactive approach. “It is all
logical, and it works,” said Rayno. “Knock on wood
– we haven’t seen ringworm since. I’m always open
for better ways of doing things. If someone knows
how to build a better mouse trap, show me how to
use it.”
Since then, Rayno has reached out to offer
assistance in implementing a ringworm control
program to another humane society that had to close
its doors. Today Rayno is confident in their ability
to keep ringworm under control in a shelter
environment.
